orientation
My new hire orientation is poor to say the least. What, in your opinion, should be included in this process? (for nurses and CNA's) Thanks

What all do nurse managers do?
I am the house manager of a small facility. I do work on the floor along with management duties. They include chart audits, admissions, P R scheduling and all employee issues. I love both, patient care and management. The only problem I have is separating the two and organization.

Troubles as a new manager
First of all, yes I believe that there are always people that are not happy with anyone in authority over them. Secondly, I wouldn't confide in anyone but a superior or someone away from work. If your boss is saying that you are doing a good job and you feel that you are doing the best you can then good for you. You also need an outlet and you need to try to leave work at work. I know it is easier said than done. I tell myself the same speech all the time.

Use of gloves
I have been a hospice nurse for 4 1/2 years and I only have worn gloves when coming in contact with bodily fluids. I would agree that it is not nessessary and de-humanizing.

When off, do you listen to report?
I have been a hospice nurse for 3 1/2 years. There have been patients that I have become close to and miss, but I also need to keep life in perspective and realize that this is my job. I need to know when to take off a day and I believe so does any other nurse because if you become "burnt out" you cannot be a good caregiver.

Need tips when charting after the death of a patient
We also have a discharge summary page that has to be filled out when any one leaves. It have everything on it, diag. date of arrival, physician, summary of while they were with us and who we all called at the time of death, meds were destroyed, ect. Everything is on this sheet, so if we need to look back it's a piece of cake. We get it signed by the doc and keep it with the chart.

Excelsior questions :)
Thanks for all the info. Sounds as if everyone really like Excelsior. I'm thinking about finishing my RN thru them. Have my LPN and done alot of gen eds already. only need the phys and patho, also the clinicals and "theory" classes so maybe some of what I've already done could transfer over. How much does it cost though? Are the exams comparable or extremely tough? thank you all very much.

smoking in hospice?
I'm an LPN at a residential hospice house. I absolutely loved this job until the boss/owner (who is a smoker) has started to allow a patient (who isn't going anywhere, anytime soon-if you know what I mean) well anyway, she is now smoking in her room in this house. I am an exsmoker and find this very offensive. I have alot of trouble breathing and I stink when I leave work. I really don't want to leave this job, but I might have to. What should I do? I tried to talk to my boss but she doesn't understand.
