Why do you like home care? What are the advantages?
No its not "more profitable" but it is more enjoyable. Also, it depends on the agency you work for. I get 55 cents a mile and pay per patient due to MEDICARE. I hear Oregan has different laws. You can also use all your personal items as tax deductions: Car, phone, computer, gas costs, etc.

Why do you like home care? What are the advantages?
I have been in Home Health nursing for appox. 18mths now, after having done 10 plus years of clinic and other nursing. I love home health. It has its stresses and one is that it is definitely NOT a eight hour shift job you walk away from and forget. I see on average 4 to 6 patients a day. DUE TO MEDICARE, I get paid by patient. This is not the in home care some nurses are talking about. That is more long term. I have seen 7 patients in one day but, it was very stressful. I always end up on computer time at home for at least 2 more hours documenting. I love it due to my empty nest. It is not a job for a single mom.

Clinic Job Hunt Question
Not sure what its like in other areas of the country, but I worked in clinic in California that is associated with the hospital in the area. Generally, clinics don't hire RNs because they don't need them and its too costly. They barely hire LVNs any more. Most are staffed with MAs. If your interested in staying in caring for children, might I suggest looking into home care instead. Just be firm in that you only want PT work otherwise they will work you FT.

Vent. Should I feel bad about not picking up shifts?
You'd think that if every time they call you refuse, not to call any more?

Medicare admittable diagnosis for SNF
Hi, I am wondering if any one can tell me some admittable reasons for some one to get directly admitted to a SNF? I have a relative that is declining, will be starting on hospice soon, and needs to be cared for 24hrs til her death. We are not able to do it or afford help any longer. She lives in her own home that is NOT paid for. She does not qualify for MediCAL. Her prognosis is terminal within 90 days appox. Medicare rules make it dificult and I don't know all of reasons. Only one I can think of is multiple falls in a certain time period. Please help if you can, we need to know asap.

Where do I go from here?
I am in my dream job as a home health nurse. You may want to look into that:)

Another low staffing - am i being a baby- new nurse post!
I am wondering, are you a new grad? I was and had less than 2weeks training in a LTC also. I was then put in an alzhemiers unit that was being treated for scabies. I was expected to pass meds on 35 patients who were constantly wandering around the unit. I made a med error my second week there. I quit the next week without giving notice. I felt that I was "set up" to fail and they deserved it. DON's need to train their nurses better or expect to have lousy nurses working for them. Before something happens make a compliant to your DON.

Any online RN nursing schools
FYI a friend is taking an online RN program and it is costing appox. 17K

Does your facility allow the floor/unit nurses write up other nurses?
AMEN!
-
NS at 125 ml/hr is not an ER order
This is why the cost of medical care is skyrocketing because of lame orders like that.

I failed my patient
Most of us at one time or another have felt the same way you do now. Just remind yourself that colostomies can be reversed and children rebound better than adults.

Please help pt with leaking colostomy
All the replies are good except I'm not sure what Beastmaster RN was talking about. My only suggestion would be to try benzo tincture to make the area as sticky as possible AFTER you apply the skin prep.

Do home health (visiting) nurses usually work on holidays?
I am a LVN working as a home health nurse. I love my job. I hope you love it too. I worked in a clinic for 10 years before this and had all holidays and weekends off. Now I work one weekend a month and most holidays. Its a diferent type of life. I don't have children at home any longer so it works for me. Holidays tend to be quiet and not many visits are made because patients are with family and don't want to be seen.

LVN vs RN
Hi, I'm an LVN and have been for several years. If you want to work in a hospital plan on getting your RN because its the wave of the future. California hospitals don't hire LVNs any longer.
