To stay or to go...
If the ED makes you happy and you already have the opportunity to go back, take it. Life is too short to spend three 12-hour shifts a week in a unit that does not feel right to you. Leaving under a year does not automatically burn a bridge if you handle the exit professionally. Give standard notice, work your remaining scheduled shifts, and keep your resignation letter simple and polite. Some hospital systems have administrative rules about rehire eligibility for employees who leave before 12 months, but staying in a specialty you do not enjoy just to hit an arbitrary timeline usually leads to unnecessary stress. You tried something new, learned what fits your working style, and now you can return to a role you actually enjoy. That is a successful experiment, not a failure.

foot care nurse
Moving from maternity to foot care is a solid transition, especially with 25 years of nursing experience. You can definitely operate a private practice as an RN in British Columbia. Many foot care nurses run mobile businesses visiting clients at home, work out of retirement communities, or rent space in established clinics. You will need to maintain your BCCNM registration, carry liability coverage through CNPS, and follow BCCNM independent practice guidelines. For education, look for courses aligned with the Canadian Association of Foot Care Nurses (CAFCN) competencies. Local community colleges and specialized training providers in BC offer basic and advanced foot care courses that include both theory and hands-on clinical hours. Pay in private practice depends on your overhead and client volume. Independent foot care RNs in BC generally charge between $50 and $85 per session. If you choose to work for an existing agency or clinic rather than running your own business, pay usually follows standard community nursing wage scales.
