I'm currently thinking about becoming an RN in pediatrics but I am figuratively on the "first step" in pursuing this dream. I hope you can help me .. How did you land your CNA job at a pediatrics hospital? Have you ever worked for an LTC/home health facility with mentally ill patients? I want to get my CNA also but would rather gain experience in a children's/pediatric hospital. I worked as a home health aide to mentally ill patients in the past for a few months and couldn't bare it for too long. I've been teaching ESL abroad for several years now and enjoy spending time with primary/secondary school children. Any input would be nice! It's great to see the level of satisfaction you have with your job!

I wish there were more replies as well. This seems like it could be a very informative thread for beginning pediatric nurses. Tinkerbell, I am still deciding whether I would like to take a nursing track to become a pediatrics nurse. So I have yet to take the science prereq. courses starting this fall. I'm wondering, what type of work experiences did you have to land you the job at the clinic? In the past, I worked for a co. that had me working at several group homes dealing with the mentally disabled/ill, sick, and elderly and I did not enjoy-- Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I truly appreciate your suggestions and advice. In any case, aren't clinical rotations only done when you've been accepted to a nursing program and toward the culmination of that program? This fall I plan to take a few prereqs (8 courses required to be taken in 1.5-2 years in my plan) while doing part-time as a caregiver/health provider. I'm hoping that the PT work will enable me to take the CNA course and eventually become a CNA while taking the prereqs. If you're planning on taking them at a 4-year uni. (such as myself), what is your situation with financial aid? Will you be offered any student loans? I would assume that every institution is different regarding their amount of funds to students who have already obtained a bachelor degree, but I could be wrong ~~

Hello, Leah, I read your post and wanted to inquire if you've already taken some prereqs. If so, how many courses have you taken per semester and were you eligible for student loans? I'll be returning to school this fall after almost a 5 year hiatus to take prerequs for a MSN program. I graduated with a 3.1 after my undergraduate.

Have you tried looking at MSN programs? If you have a BS degree in Chemistry I'm assuming some of the prereq courses required for a MSN program would already be knocked out, in your case. I've already obtained a BS degree in '06 so I'm also wondering about my eligibility for loans this upcoming semester for taking the MSN prereqs, .

Wow, excellent thread! I am also in a similar situation but male, 30, no children, not married, and already have a B.S degree in Human Dev. & Family Studies. I'm planning to take prereqs for a MSN program here in the midwest for the fall of 2013. In the meantime I'll also hope to be working PT (very minmal hours) and taking the course the become a CNA. Seeing that I'll be a "non-degree seeking" student this fall taking prereqs at a 4-year uni, is anyone else in a similar situation? I have an appointment w/ the nursing program admissions advisor mid-August and am HOPING that I'll be eligible for enough loans to pay for tuition and misc. expenses (lodging, books, etc.). Has anyone (in a similar, or not) received sufficient funds for prereq. courses? I know the amount of FA is different and contigent upon many factors; but does it also depend on the state? Not having sufficient funds for tuition will definitely pose problems ..

Coincidentally, I'm opting for a very similar route! It seems you're currently taking prereqs and will continue to this fall. If you aren't so skilled in math, of the three courses you're taking this fall, would it be wiser to include one math course in your schedule and remove a either lifespan or speech? Just my suggestion I guess :S..I'm not such a math-whiz myself so I'm wondering if I should just take 2 courses this fall and hopefully do PT work in patient-care to receive the CNA (3 week course I believe). I've read and spoke w/ a nursing program advisor and she conveyed that grades are extremely important, B+ or better in all prereqs!

Greetings, all~ I have been reading your posts on here and fisher's ambition and perseverence to enter a nursing program emulates my current change in careers. I am planning to apply for a MSN program that will lead to an RN, non-specialty. Firstly, this program is strictly for folks whom already obtain a 4-year degree (U of MN Nursing Program). I currently hold a BS in Human Dev. & Family Studies and have been in education for several years now. There are 8 prereq. courses that I am required to take in order to apply for the accelerated nursing program. I can either take 2 courses (and upon doing well of course) a semester and apply for the 2013, fall cohort, or take 4 courses this fall semester in hopes to do well on them. My question is, Fisher (or to whom it may concern), have you taken any of the prereqs yet? If so, how many courses have you taken and what do you recommend? I remembered you stating you decided to take them at a 4-year uni. as I will plan to do. I figured if I decide to take 2 courses/semester, I can squeeze in minimal PT work as a care provider and also become a CNA. I plan to become an RN in pediatrics and hopefully advance my career to a NP. I'm currently residing in the midwest, MN. Thanks in advance for any input or info.!
