Now that the Covid 19 vaccine is just around the corner... Will it be mandatory?
You, my friend, are a real American! Salute!

Covid Vaccine
I presume that you all are aware that this vaccine isn't a traditional vaccine? That is, this vaccine doesn't make use of a weakened COVID-19 virus. This vaccine will use messenger RNA (mRNA). I'd be less leery if the vaccine did contain an attenuated COVID-19 virus. However, mRNA! That's too worrisome!

Sexism against men in nursing
A few questions: Is it sexist for female nurses to rely on the men in the unit to perform chest compressions? If not, what is your opinion? Is sexist the appropriate word describe this behavior. Ladies, do you ask the men on the unit to perform chest compressions? Fellas, do you acquiesce?[h=1][/h]

Should we change the needleless hub after drawing blood from a central catheter?
Hello, A travel nurse recommended that I change the needleless hub after I draw blood from a central line. He simply said that the practice decreases the risk of CLABSI. Blood that remains in the hub can harbor bacteria and be introduced into the blood stream with subsequent use. Made sense to me. However, I can't find any research to substantiate this. What do you all know about this? Probably

Looking to get into critical care nursing
In the meantime, purchase or borrow a CCRN book and read. Not for preparation of the test. Read it to ready yourself for the ICU. Some people have a difficult time transitioning from the floor to the ICU. The ICU is a very busy place and a person can get caught up in tasks. Reading a CCRN book will introduce you to the "why" you are performing certain tasks. Have a talk with one of the ICU directors. You might be surprised at what they have available.

Problems with financial aid
I'm currently enrolled in an RN-BSN program. I just finished my first eight weeks. I took two courses: Professional nursing and Informatics. I got two As! That said, I will only take one course at a time, henceforth. It was rough for a married man, with children, and a full time job. I am having a lot of difficulty receiving my financial aid check. I qualified for some aid, and I want it. The school claims that they sent the check. After speaking to someone in the fin. aid dept. per email, they claim that they have mailed another check. We're not talking CA to NY. The check should have been here. I feel that the fin. aid dept. is being coy. They won't tell me if there was a mistake on their part. They won't tell me if someone has committed fraud. They won't even tell me if I can set up a direct deposit account. It seems very irresponsible to send a multi-thousand dollar check via the mail. I'll wait until Friday to receive a check. I'll be starting another eight week course this Sunday. Soon they will be charging my credit card AGAIN! Has anyone ever experienced something like this? If so, how did you resolve the problem? What was the problem? Thanks in advance.

University of Wyoming RN to BSN Online
I just received an acceptance letter to the college! It is such a relief to read so many positive things about this program! I just e-mailed the school asking if I could take one class at a time. I guess that I should have came here first. I will e-mail the application for the RN-BSN program, my license, and submit the $30.00 fee in the morning. I am so looking forward to getting started. I'm brushing up on my math. My wife is very competent w/ algebra. Therefore, I'm not worried. I want to get one class done so that I can better gauge how to blend being a full time worker in a stressful SICU, a husband, and father of three. I have taken some on-line classes. However, my children were younger then. They require a lot more stimulation now. I don't want to neglect my children or my wife. I'm proud of myself and I'm proud of you all. Let's keep up the strong work!

Clinical tidbits I wish someone would've told me.
Atropine is NOT for bradycardia. It is for SYMPTOMATIC bradycardia. If your patient has an a-line, place the "oxy-sensor" on a finger on the a-line side. Always place the V lead at the right sternal border, fourth intercostal space. One unit of packed red blood cells increases the hgb by 1g/dl and the crit 3%. Yes, always give volume before pressors!

I feel so dumb... I got flustered - about a patient in respiratory distress
Does the E.D. have a dedicated respiratory therapists (RT)? They are an awesome resource. Get to know them and use them. If you don't like the RT that's on now, call someone else. You wrote that her H & H were "in the toilet." I would have drawn a rainbow: a blue, lavender, gold, mint green, and a pink top. No order. Stick the tube(s) in your pocket and get an order. Was an ABG done? Are you all allowed to do arterial sticks? The RNs were responsible for arterial sticks at my former hospital. That said, if a person came up w/ peripheral IVs only, and we were having difficulty obtaining blood samples. We would stuck them "arterially" and obtained blood samples. Also assessment, assessment, assessment! Skin color, lung sounds, heart rate, rhythm analysis, skin warm or dry, voiding or not, cap. refill, etc. With a strong assessment, the previous RN could have made a stronger case to the MD about this patient. Reads like she needed an MD sooner rather than later. I realize that you all perform focused assessments rather than head to toe, as we do in the ICU. However, when giving an MD pertinent info., they are more likely to see the pt. Even if that means dropping what they are doing at the time. Respiratory patients: always obtain a baseline ABG, assess lung sounds, CXR, and notify RT of your pt. in respiratory distress. I know that BiPap is initiated in the E.D. After appropriate interventions and depending upon the situation. BiPap can prevent intubation in some situations.

Haven't heard from HR yet
If all all your ducks are in a row, I'm certain that you have the job. They have to check you out. However, you are probably at the mercy of the PROCESS! Just last year, I had a fabulous interview. You'd think that the nurse manager and I went way back. I knew that I would receive a call next week from HR. Nothing doing. I had literally gone on to three more interviews in the interim. The following week, everybody called back with job offers! I accepted the job from the first interview. I sometimes regret that decision.

RN to BSN online
Greetings, I appreciate your reply. Please comment on completing a class in five to ten weeks. A five week course sounds very difficult. Ten weeks sounds difficult. However, it seems that ten or 12 weeks would be a lot less stressful than a five or six week course. What on line college did you choose? How long were the quarters? How much instruction can be taught/ learned in five weeks? FIVE WEEKS!? Is some material omitted? I've taken summer semesters, and I thought that fast paced! Help allay my anxieties! BTW, my wife & I have two small children and I work full time nights.

RN to BSN online
Hello, Two questions: What is it like taking a course in five to ten weeks? Seems like such a grind. How much math does one need to survive an introductory statistics course? I would really like to "hear" from those of you with children and a spouse respond to my first question. Thanks! S
