  1. well, I am only entering my second day! WOOHOO but I am actually surprised at the slow start that we have gotten off to. I expected we would come and jump right into everything but there have been so many issues about over enrollment and our addmissions counselors gave us the wrong schedule so there were a bunch of whiners, etc etc. I am actually surprised at the level of rudeness in some of my classmates, and not to be mean, but can already pick a few out that I know won't be standing there with us when we graduate. I am actually pretty frustrated about it and went ahead and just started reading and getting as far as I can. I hope it gets better, I love my instructors, just can't wait until it all starts. Now I am sure I will be back here in a couple of weeks WHINING that I can't keep up or I am stressed out or something but all in all, I am still so excited and happy that I have finally started my journey!
  2. Hi and good luck in school! I am only a week into school and we have already had one drop out and 4 others already saying that they aren't going to be able to make our Saturday classes. Now granted we were all told different schedules from our admissions counselors, but still come on. In our orientation, our DON told us that at our school there is a 59% drop rate. I got worried too and asked her after orientation about it. She said it is VERY normal. Alot of people don't know wht they are getting into and they can't handle it with family, work, etc. etc. She even went on to tell me that when she was in nursing school, they started with 153 students and only 57 graduated. So from wht I have heard from her, my other instructors, and other nurses here, it is pretty normal.
  3. I wanted to ask a few questions about a personal experience that I had with my mother, that has actually been the reason why I am in school for nursing. My mother had a quadruple bypass in July of this year. My mother did live a very sedentary lifestyle that unfortunately involved alot of alcohol consumption. We brought her into the ER because she actually had a slight stroke which after cat scans and her cardiac cath they found that she was pretty much completely blocked and scheduled her for her bypass immediately. Everything went fine with her surgery, but approximately 24 hrs post-op she became very paranoid which I initially didn't think much of, I figured she is pretty drugged up it will go away. Needless to say it didn't. Within a few hours she was completely insane, she was fighting with the nurses (she actually injured one of them) and said that they were trying to kill her and all of our family that was there for her. This went on for about 24 hours and subsided once they took her out of ICU. I know you have probably seen all of this before, but this was my mother and I was devastated and didn't and still don't understand what happened. We came and sat with her and the nurses called her doctor. I am confused and still don't understand it, the doctor seemed to think it was alcohol withdraw, even though she had already been in the hospital for 6 days without a drink and didn't have any of these symptoms. I don't believe that was what it was. Then a nurse suggested something called ICU psychosis. I tried to research it but it seems there isn't much out there that I could find. Have any of you experienced this and could you maybe explain some of it to me. As a foot note to this all of the nurses that took care of my mother and our family from the beginning to the end (even in the bad times) were wonderful and I think that all nurses are amazing people and should be recognized for the great things they do with their patients and I truly mean that. They truly inspired me.
  4. ok, I am not a doctor or anything (hahaha) but my sister has TMJ and she has all of the symptoms that you are describing. Her dentist diagnosed it and gave her a mouth guard to use while she slept and it helped her incredibly. She never actually had jaw pain it was always just headaches that is why she had it for years without anyone knowing what it was. Just a thought
  5. I start on Sept 29th going nights Mon-thurs 5:30 -10:30 with clinicals on Sats 6:30-3:30. It is an 18 mth program. we have to wear scrubs everyday also, I am very nervous, I am working full time and going to school, plus I am a single mother. I am So nervous that I am not going to handle it. I was very good in school straight A's (yes I was the nerd) but from reading posts on here I am terified that I am not going to hack it, Any advice anyone going through the same thing?
  6. I apologize for posting here I am not in CRNA school, I really am sorry, I can only imagine how hard it is for you guys. I guess I am already losing it :-)
  7. I am starting classes in 2 weeks. I am going to school to be an LPN first, then RN, BSN. you know all the way :-) I am very nervous, I am going to be working full time and going to school part time. I am also a single mother. I was always great in school straight A's and everything, and reading some of these posts I am absolutely terrified. I think I may be in over my head and that I am going to fail....Is anyone in this situation, you know, school work and family and are you succeeding, and how do you manage?? I think I am having my first panic attack :-)
  8. Hy my name is Brandi. I am in the Hampton Roads area, new LPN student just starting. I do have a question for anyone that knows. I have heard that it is possible as a mursing student, that after a certain amount of classroom hours and clinical hours, you can apply for a job as a patient care tech or CNA. Is this true in VA and is it true for LPN students??? Does anyone know or does anyone know who I might ask about that???
  9. This is my first time here I am a newbie and only a student but I already have encountered this issue at my school. We have a medical assisting course offered and I remember just last week while I was eating lunch I overheard two MA's talking to each other (one is actually in school with me now to become an LPN) and she asked her why she was in school to be an LPN. Her response was that she was tired of doing all the same things and getting paid less. They laughed and my classmate even said LPN's are glorified MA's. I can't tell you how enraged I got at that statement and I am only a STUDENT. If they were the same in any way than we would go to the same schools and MA's would sit for the SAME exams to be certified. I agree with the previous posts, I don't feel that I am better than an MA, but I know that once I graduate I will be more educated and I am already and will be extremely proud to wear the title of LPN and RN in the future. I am a single mother and I am working hard to get to that point, and I made sure that thye both understood that.
