  1. Its RN/LVN team nursing. They are using their license as an LVN, not a tech or patient care associate. Texas is one of the only states where an LVN can do almost as much as an RN. I say almost because we cannot spike the blood bag but can monitor the administration of blood, can assist in the ER but cannot do initial assessments. I have my own patient assignments and most places here have found its more cost effective to hire LVNs with a RN charge nurse. It has vanished elsewhere my mother lives in NC, is an LPN and can only do LTC or clinic jobs because hospitals don't hire LPNs there).
  2. Im curious as to why you think this? since the poster put LVN they are located in Texas or California. Here in texas there are lots of opportunities the are not LTC for LVNs. I personally do not like LTC but ive been able to avoid it by working at a smaller hospital but even the large hospitals in the area hire LVNs for med surg, and any other floors ( ER, L&D, OR and ICUs excluded)
  3. No its not. I work in a small med surg hospital and got hired before i graduated. Its all about where you live and how much you put yourself out there, i had applied for multiple jobs( none of them nursing homes) before graduation. I live in West Texas (lubbock area).
  4. 1st semester is almost done for me. I have another week in which we have OB finals and ATI testing to pass. I'm looking forward to the 2 week break (we start 2nd semester jan 2nd) Congrats on passing your Hesi!
  5. My anatomy teacher keeps pronouncing groin grow-in.... its supposed to be gr-oin (like in coin) right?
  6. In the program i'm in(LVN) we have 2 RN BSNs that teach a&p,geri, med surg, etc. but we also have 2 LVN's that teach professional adjustments and do skills with us as well as going to clinicals with us. I am in West Texas.
  7. For the LVN program I got into you had to 1. take entrance test (covers writing, sentence skills, math, etc.) and make specific minimum scores (college level competency) 2. Fill out application and answer attached questions (why you want to be a nurse, how a nurse has impacted your life, etc.) (after acceptance) 3. complete all immunization requirements and complete physical 4. Complete a 1 week MANDATORY orientation with mock lectures, skills check offs, etc. (the orientation already weeded out a few people who didn't realize the time/money/responsibilities of nursing school) I disagree with the previous medical experience BECAUSE have none yet I have nurses in my family who have made the expectations and difficulty of school/ patient care VERY clear. under your system i would have never been accepted.
  8. Kyra -Levelland, Texas - South Plains College- 1 year starts Aug 29th (i'm counting down the days!)
  9. The one that really drives me nuts is NICU. I've always heard it nick-u (i'm from Florida with family from the north east) but here(in west Texas) its ni-coo which is correct?
  10. 1* What's the overall cost of your program? 10,000 2* If U qualify for Financial Aid than what's the remaining amount that U have to pay overall? So far nothing but i'm guessing itll be at least 1,000 3* What school R-U-goin' to? South Plains College 4* Where's your school located? Levelland, Texas
  11. As far as i know most places around here do due to the shortage (people tend to move away from here not to here.) I have only seen a few jobs that specify 1 year minimum
  12. I live in Levelland which is approx 30 miles outside of Lubbock. Lubbock has 2 major hospital systems Covenant and University Medical Center. Covenant has a children's hospital and most of the rural hospitals such as the one here in Levelland are under the Covenant system. There are also a few specialty hospitals such has Lubbock Heart Hospital. I do not know the starting wage for RN's but LVN's make around 15 an hour to start. Cost of living is very cheap compared to the east coast and it gets cheaper if you live outside of Lubbock. Starting at 525 for a 1bedroom apartment in Lubbock. I would suggest not living close to Texas Tech University because housing is more expensive the closer you get. It is very hot, dry and windy here most of the year however it does snow in the winter.(nothing like Maine just a few inches at a time for a couple of months) Today it was 109 with wind gusts of approx 20mph and humidity was 12% (normal is less than 8% here so EXTREMELY dry) I moved here from NC and had to get used to the long flat roads and minimal trees. There is a mall in Lubbock, 2 movie theaters, ect. Once you go outside of Lubbock there isn't much to do. For example the town i live in has a Walmart, a united (local grocery store) and some chain fast food restaurants along with lots of Mexican food places. If you have any questions feel free to ask, i'll try to answer them if i can.
  13. Freshstart the LVN program at SPC is a year. The levelland campus starts only in august but reese starts in august and january.
