american laser center
I also got a job offer, seems like no one on the board is a current or former employee. I did a Yelp search and found good stuff on the specific clinic, however they have not told me any details on compensation. That's not my primary goal anyway, but its a significant detail that's being left out. I'm quite excited about the job however, it seems like a lot of fun and a great learning experience. & I am pretty loyal so if they retain me ill stay.

When do I ask about salary?
Hey there, I got interviewed and got offered a job at an aesthetic clinic. We're going through the hiring process now, with the applications and such, but have not filled out any W4s or direct deposit stuff. However, as far as I was informed, they're already making scrubs with my name on them, BUT we haven't talked about compensation AT ALL. They know I want the job because why would I go to the interview to just turn it down, especially so because I'm a new grad in the bay area, and this is a lucky break for me, to get an RN job just two months after passing the NCLEX-RN. I also got a call back and interview for tomorrow, at a home health organization. Now I don't know what to do because I don't really know the status of the other one... Even the hours wasn't discussed with me! I know I probably should have brought it up during the interview, but I didn't because I felt it was not the time and place to do so. How do I go about this? Can I just casually shoot an email to the clinic manager? They have a different HR person which I haven't met, and I think she's the one who handles that stuff. I don't know what to do.. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it very much. fireline, rn

Online Applications vs. Paper Applications
Hey there! I was told that when you apply online to big hospitals or health care systems, that there is an automated bot? or program that kicks out your resume if you don't have the necessary keywords. In light of this, do you think it's better if I send in my application through the mail? Some hospitals do give out their Human Resources contact information, while some say they only accept resumes through their online system. Has a new grad (ish) obtained a job through an on line application??? on the flipside, has anyone been successful by applying through the mail? or cold-mailing??? Thank you! fireline, RN

First time scrub buyer (as an RN)
Hello everyone, I've been looking at some sites online (allheart, uniform advantage, etc.) and I can't seem to find the scrub top I want, which is a solid color with two pockets at the bottom. I know Cherokee has them, but I can't find them! At all! and I don't want to pay more than $15 for a top. Should I just get the one's without pockets and put pockets on them? I can sew but idk if I can match the fabric. I'm really picky about the pockets, I need them! Does anybody have any suggestions where they get theirs? I'm a small dude 5'6". Help! fireline, rn

26 page application...then what? hope for a new grad?!?
A Home Health Company's owner/head called me, basically saying oh we usually put new grads with peds who need insulin or who have sz d/os and you go to school with them and such.. and I was like oh wow that's nice and i was genuinely excited because it was a callback! anyway, she forwarded me a 26 page application, with the tax forms and an employment agreement form and im thinking, she hasn't even had me come in for an interview, like, really does she want me?? I'm really excited because i live in the bay area, california... and i just graduated in december. and all i really want is a nursing job!!! she told me her HR person was on vacation and needed to play catch up so im hoping to hear from them before the week ends. i really wanna get started on my career we all have worked hard to get at where we are... i'm glad im not too picky...ill take anything except ER... a little too nervewracking. if i get this job its nothing short of a miracle!! Please have me in your thoughts... I want to finally be able to give my parents my first paycheck, doesnt matter how much it is. its from being an RN, and thanking them for everything.... Wish me LUCK!!! fireline, rn california

bipolar; please help
hey! you're not alone, and there is TONS of HOPE for nurses and student nurses with mental illnesses. I was diagnosed with bp i about 5 months before i started nursing school. i have a genius psychiatrist who got me on meds and relatively stable, and I have been for the past two years. I recently passed the NCLEX-RN, and because I have a BS in Psychology (pre-dx, and before the onset of the bp) I was able to get accepted into a BSN-MSN program. I am mostly dependent on the medication, I tried therapists but they didnt really do anything for me. The nature of the illness is mostly physiological anyway, unlike depressive episodes which can be situational. So our ups and downs can happen at any time, some have triggers.. I believe that I have triggers--everything is a trigger, so basically it nulls itself out. Uhm. What I'm trying to say is that individuals who want to pursue a nursing career (or any other career) should not be discouraged. We're covered by the ADA which is wonderful to think about (sick leave!), and if I cycle and it affects me enough, we can be relocated to a position that best fits us for that amount of time (just like a nurse with a sprained ankle). I have to think of bipolar disorder this way, because a lot of people think that mental illness is just a lack of coping skills, when its not. Get support (family, friends, groups). Use the sxs to your advantage (mild hypomania=efficiency, and a lot of work done!). and just live... :) sending out lots of love, fireline, rn

Resume: Folded or Flat?
Yeah, the tiniest things matter nowadays. What happened to just walking in confidently and being given the job on the spot?? I'm in CA and the littlest things count!

Resume: Folded or Flat?
I've been looking online and have these two options. The cost doesn't bother me as much as the impression I can make. Do you think its necessary to send the coverletter and resume flat? Is it not professional if its folded? Anybody who worked/works in HR? thanks, fl rn

Relocation Questions
Hello all, I just got my CA RN license and I am MORE than interested to move to another state for my first (and possibly long long term) job. I just don't know how to organize the whole thing. For example, I have seen plenty of openings for new grads/non-experienced nurses in Texas, not in the big metropolitan areas, but they're there and there's a variety of positions. Do I get a license first? I've been applying online but of course the job posting requires (sometimes) a TX license, however some say "or can be licensed" or something to that effect. Do I get a job first? How can I do that when I'm over here. Will they even call me back if I'm from out of state? I am serious about moving, how do I convey that? Apartments, rental homes, classmates who are possibly interested in moving too, and I have 2 dogs! I need some heavy advice. I know someone out there did this at one time or another. I'm scared but want to start working the floor. I miss it. fireline, rn

pick a state, any state
I would like to ask for anyone to give me some information regarding the hiring of new grads in these states: Oklahoma, Colorado, North Dakota, Texas.. and also any other state. I just got licensed in CA, and in as much as I would like to stay here, I am not going to fight tooth and nail for one job opening with 500 applicants. Which state accepts new grads with a little more education and experience? I'm willing to relocate even if I hate snow :/ More Info: ADN, RN, ACLS, BLS, BA Psychology, currently in a Master's program The education must count for something right? im thinking maybe in a psych or behavioral health role? or even Peds. Please help me... I'm sad to say I am desperate but i really am. I have my parents to support and bills to pay.. and some phone calls need to be avoided. I am ready to up and leave and start working, not only for income but I don't want to be out of practice... I love working the floor and I am blessed with a good support system.... thank you in advance for your input. This board is amazing. fireline, rn

Applying to other states, but not licensed by the state
I am an RN licensed in CA. I am looking for jobs in several states. The applications ask for a license, and I dont have one because I want to make sure I have a few job offers before spending money and time on a license. Can I just say yes to the question?? How do you go about this? And I know I've been asking this but can someone please give me at least 5 states that are new grad friendly? I will relocate to the far side of the moon if need be. Thanks! Compact States: 1 is enough?
Hello again, I was wondering if I apply for a license in a compact state, is it true that I don't have to apply to any of the other states that are included? I want to save money and maybe some states' license fees are cheaper than the others. Arizona charges 200, but now someone said they werent new grad friendly so i may be looking somewhere else....

Waiting for NCLEX-RN Results in CA
Thank you all for your responses. I did the PVT and I got the good popup. I am very skeptical though, because no one in my class has gotten through to the payment page... Yes, I look every day at the license verification and I plug in all of my classmates' names (the ones who took the exam before me). Nothing yet. I may just call the BRN, I want to know my results, but at the same time I'm scared to be put on top of the list only to find out I failed. I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling like this. The stressful days and restless sleep and just feeling kind of weak inside is such a bad feeling. I have been looking at jobs but when I applied to a couple they said they needed my license number and they couldn't work on the application without it. For now, I'll have to trust the PVT. and maybe call the BRN. Finding out early either way will end the torture. If I do have to retake (I hope not please) I'll retake it in another state so that I have the option to do Quick Results. With regards to employment yes 150 people vying for one spot just makes me want to go and find a hospital that would give me the experience and give me a chance to do patient care ASAP. I know A LOT of "new grads" from 2009 in CA still waiting to be hired. I'm going to be more pro-active than that. Two dogs, not married and very supportive parents. I'm lucky because I have the option to relocate... It's gonna be tough going here in California. I'll keep you all updated. I love this board wish I would have joined sooner! FireLine

Arizona Relocation: Is it worth it?
Hello all. I'm waiting on my NCLEX-RN results (I'm in CA). I've done some research and view Arizona as new grad friendly. Can anyone confirm this (or not)? I have an ADN, a Bachelor's in Psychology and I'm currently enrolled in a Master's program (BS in other discipline to MSN). It's mostly online for the first year, thus the possibility of relocating for the meantime. Any input? Thanks! Loving allnurses.com already. fireline

Waiting for NCLEX-RN Results in CA
Hi there! New grad here (yes, I said it!). Took the test two weeks ago, found out my college only sent out our transcripts a week ago, so now I really don't know where in the "time frame" me and my classmates are with regards to results. I read that CA still processes licenses by hand, thus adding to the waiting time. However, other students from other schools have received their results in less than two weeks. I'm so frustrated, at the same time very very very anxious. As with most NCLEX-RN takers, I have NO IDEA how I did on the test. I just don't want to burden my parents with another $200 for me to retake my exam. Some of my classmates have a pride thing, where they would be so ashamed if they didn't pass. For me, I just want to do what I want to do, care for patients, as soon as I can. Hopefully the test found me a safe entry level nurse. If not, well.... I'm ready to relocate if need be. I live in the Bay Area and its cut throat over here... I'm guessing more than 10 people vying for one precious position. How did you guys handle the wait??? Fire Line
