Hello, I have been practicing for the navy swim test and I feel confident in all areas except floating prone for 5 min. It seems as though I sink lower and lower every time I come up for a breath. I would love suggestions on how to overcome this. Thanks!

I am also in the NCP. I graduate april 28th. I will be stationed in Jacksonville. I hope it's not as bad as what I have read on some of the earlier posts. I asked for Jackonsonville after I found out san diego was full.

Don't get discouraged. I was in a similar position this time last year. I was first alternate in the NCP. I was disappointed but my recruiter told me not to worry because someone always drops off and he was fairly confident that I would get in. Sure enough in July of last year I received the call that I was in! It happens for DA and the NCP. People change their minds or things happen in their lives or school. I had all but given up and then out of the blue it happened. So don't give up hope.

I would say not having experience will make it harder. From my experience, the best thing to do is get a job as tech in the dept where you would like to work as a nurse. A lot of people assume that because you attend Goldfarb that Barnes will automatically hire you, and that's not the case. They wont even hie you as a tech unless you have at least one year of nursing school left. Some of my classmates got hired by getting to know the charge nurse during clinicals. You have to start networking and setting yourself apart from the pack. (leadership positions, volunteer work etc.) It takes more than just good grades. Just know that Goldfarb has a lot of issues just like any other nursing school. (lack of faculty, classroom space, study space etc)

You sound like I did when I first started. I'm just pointing out that for the money, it's not all it's cracked up to be. I know plenty of nurses that work at Barnes that didn't go to Goldfarb and those who did, dont have good tings to say. I know fellow students who cant even get hired as techs right now at Barnes. There are plenty of nursing students all over Barnes from many different schools. It's all about how you impress the nurse manager and charge nurse during clinicals. Going to Goldfarb is not an automatic hire as a new nurse. Getting a job as a tech after your first med- surg clinical will go a long way. By the way, I can count on one hand how many times those sims have been turned on.

Goldfarb is not all it's cracked up to be. Someone posted about it having the top rated sim lab. The simulation dummies are very rarely turned on, I we never saw the pregnant one give birth. You are rarely in the labs after you take intro to adult health. We have the least amount of sim lab hours out of all the nursing schools. Not trying to be Debbi downer, but I would suggest seriously talking to someone in the program before you decide to make this very expensive investment. They have the same problems keeping staff as any of the other schools. Most of teachers there teach at all the other schools as well. I have been on the Dean's List every semester, so I'm not just some disgruntled student. Just wish I had did more research before making my decision.

I am almost done. If I were you I would spend half the money and go to UMSL. There is no difference. It can be very disorganized sometimes and inconsistent. I have a current gpa of 3.85 and I am still very frustrated with the program. I am having serious buyers remorse.

I'm 38 so I didn't want to wait and take the chance of having to get an age waiver. I have also heard about ncp's going to med surg, but I have also heard from nurses that thet were able to transfer after a year. (Peds, women's health etc) I guess it just depends on where you want to go. I encourage everyone to stay positive. I had just about given up when I got a call from my recruiter.

Don't forget the nurse candidate program. There were 66 slots this past fiscal year. So they have that many inexperienced nurses coming in. I guess they are picking nurses with lots of experience (direct commission). Congratulations to those who made it and good luck to those still waiting.

I believe you have been professionally recommended, now you have to wait for final selection. You were probably ranked by the board. There will be a certain number of positions available (not sure how many), and the final selection from the pool of candidates that were pro rec'd. They will thsoe positions according to rank and the alternates. As an alternate you can be selected if someone ahead of you turns it down.

Just found out yesterday that I'm in!!!!!!!!!!! My recruiter has my acceptance letter and I will swear in in a couple of days. I am beyond excited. I had almost come to the conclusion that it wasn't going to happen, and then out of the blue I get an email. I'm still smiling!

Contact your recuiter. He/she should be able to give you that info. Or you can goggle navy ncp program. I remember seeing something online as far as peprwork goes.

Other than harming a patient, it is probably the fastest way to get fired! You workedtoo hard to get through nursing school to blow it on something that maybe headed nowhere. Is it really worth the risk?

If you are looking along the newborn line, how about traditional tub bathing vs sponge bathing. You could look at temperature stability both pre and post bath, umbilical cord healing and infection control, infant contentment, as well as maternal pleasure and confidence with bathing before discharge. Hope this helps.
