Is Hospice Nursing depressing?
I have had patients come on to my sub acute floor for rehab and turn into hospice. I am the kind of person who has always feared death but my hospice patients have given me an incredible view on death and dying. I have shed some tears but at the end the day I come away with the satisfactory feeling that death awaits us all. It has given me a greater appreciation of the life I love now. Every day I am reminded to appreciate my parents my boyfriend and my siblings more then ever before.

discovered and reported falsification of VS
In no defense to anyone, our vitals machine often acts out of wack and either doesn't record the vitals or records them 2 to 3 times or records only certain thing like just spo2

LTC but want to switch to a hospital immediately
I'm in the same boat. I work on sub acute which is manageable still I'm always short. When I complain they say well the hospital is also often short but there is a big difference between 4-8 patients and 14-28. Also sometimes when short they float me to a LTC unit but when I'm short no one ever wants to come to my sub acute side even thought everyone believes that I have the easiest unit in the facility bc it's only 14 pts. I love sub acute but I'm really looking to move to a hospital. I waited 6 months and would suggest you do the same.

Charting..... HELP!
I have the same problem. I got a book on charting "charting the easy way", my facility has been in servicing us due some new changes in Medicare. I also try to follow a simple formula. Fir every thing that I chart I as myself, what did I see, what did I do about it, how did the patient react. When one nurse would write "c/o pain 8/10. PRN Dilaudid with effect" I would write, 4:30 c/o pain to L knee 8/10 when changing position in bed, facial grimacing noted, offered fluids, repositioned for comfort,PRN what ever, 5 pm pt states pain level manageable at 3/10, resting in bed, appears comfortable socializing with visitor.

What does it mean to be charge nurse at your job?
I work on a sub acute and the charge nurse does pretty much run the show. She goes to RCC meeting, calls the docs talks with the APRN and then at the end of the day helps the nurses in the floor wrap things up, charting etc. The charge nurse has no patients of her own but for the amount of work she does I hope the oat deferential is more than a buck!

NCLEX study advice
I did ATI for a week and found it painstakingly long. In about that time I realized that the best thing I can do is practice taking the test. I had a week left till I took it. I read online that if you can get to a 60 to 70 percent correct rate on practice tests you are good to go. I went to the book store every day I took the tests out of the books. I would spend about 4 hrs doing this and keeping a tab on my scores in different areas. Once I hit 60 in one area for example meds I would move on to others I needed to work on. About two days bf the exam I took about 3 or four comprehensive exams and was scoring in the high 50's. I passed the NCLEX in 76 questions and it took me about half an hour. nothing i reviewed on ati was on the test. In conclusion, I would say don't bother with reviewing and focus on answering questions.

New grad rn :( I wanna cry
I feel your frustration. I have applied to every hospital in the state and no luck. But better work somewhere else then no where. So...... I put on my best suit and went driving around town and applied to rehab facilities. Not only did I get to hand in my app to an actual HR person but I got an interview the next day!

treatment of student nurses on the floor
After my first few days of clinical I have notice that student nurses are either barked at or avoided all together and rarely does a nurse on her own accord try to educate the student nurse. I know that is the job of our clinical instructor but it would be nice to ask me if I want to tag along to a interesting/important procedure/task. One time a neurologist asked me if I wanted to observe a spinal tap and another time a nurse asked me if i wanted to watch her change a dressing. Other than that the majority of the nurses I have seen are my age with expressionless faces staring into their computer screen and attending their patients in the same manner. What's up with that? Don't they realize one day I may be their nurse and will taking care of them or one of their family members? Besides, they have all be through nursing school and may have had a lot of the same experiences as we will. Where is these peoples love of the world and all it's people. I hope I never become that kind of nurse, that's ONE lesson they HAVE taught me.

BHSN-Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Fall 2011
Are there any commuters from the Hartford Area? I just got into the school and am not looking forward to the drive. I have looked at Amtrack and they have a commuter train that could get me to bridgeport by 8 am. The pass costs 579 for 30 days and you can get a 15% student discount. I would like to hear from anyone who might be commuting from hartford and your ideas, plans?

BHSN-Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Fall 2011
I meant Jan, sorry, in all the excitement I got my months all mixed up. I took the TEAS in the 20th I think, somewhere in there. It was cool that I got my acceptance within a week after my TEAS, otherwise I would have gone crazy!

BHSN-Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Fall 2011
To all those still waiting or interested in applying here is some useful info: I just got my letter of acceptance. I filed my app feb 11th, i took the TEAS for the second time( i took them once from CCC) on the 20th. My score was a 92% which put me in the 99% both nationally and for the program. I had perfect scores in science and math and in the 80's for the english. My GPA was a 3.0 after i retook chem 1. I have an F and several C's on my transcript which come from UCONN, a BS in Biological Sciences. My recommendations were from an employer, a camp director where I volunteer and an woman who's elderly mother I look after. My essay was about an experience at a camp for kids with special needs. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting or is interested in applying. It's quite a relief to get this whole thing over with and I am very excited to begin nursing school!
