  1. I Wish I Could Get Away with It...

the reality of it is that there are probably a lot of nursing students receiving a scholarship from the hospital who were sitting at home doing the exact same thing. she might have been "busted" because she happened to be in the hospital, but it woul...
  2. Nurse Called Police/CPS on Parents over Jaundice

my daughter had jaundice and her pediatrician encouraged me to breastfeed. there was never any mention of not doing so. he had a machine delivered to our home and we did light therapy there. this is the first time i've ever seen anything about being ...
  3. Using BSN when you have not earned it

so many people lie about their credentials i think especially in nursing and teaching. maybe it happens in other fields, but i've noticed it so much in these two bc that is where i have experience. i've known so many daycare workers to pass themselve...
  4. i have to say our cleaning staff is awesome. actually, the only rooms that have large trash bags and/or linen bags IN the room are our isolation rooms. otherwise, when a bed needs to be changed or there are towels used for a clean-up, we grab a bag o...
  5. if being injured by emptying a linen bag is a major concern, i think it would be good to consider a less physically demanding job. if you can't lift a linen bag safely how can you lift patients? scary.
  6. injure yourself? really? maybe it's just me, but i have bigger things to worry about than getting hurt dumping a linen bag.
  7. Nurse's aides are running the the floor.

we actually take 3 sets - but who's counting?
  8. Using BSN when you have not earned it

okay, i don't think it's right, but if i had to guess i would say that they put it on the badge because this person is so close to finishing there's no sense in making another one a few months from now. that makes sense. BUT if i were this person's m...
  9. Nurse's aides are running the the floor.

At my facility we have access to the charts because we have to document vital signs, ADL's, blood sugars, etc. It would be very time consuming and unrealistic to have to report to someone else every time something needed to be charted, but it would ...
  10. So do you actually take your breaks?

it's not really accurate, but it IS illegal to work when you're off the clock - and since 30 minutes gets deducted from your time/pay - you are essentially working off the clock if you don't take a break.
  11. Nurse's aides are running the the floor.

it's not "if" it's when and that would be on a regular basis. but if we're going by that logic, the quarrel shouldn't be with the aide, but with the schedule, correct?
  12. Nurse's aides are running the the floor.

that definitely happens, but once again you underestimate. i know when a patient asks for meds to help them sleep and there isn't an order for that med and when a patient asks for pain meds and asks for them again 30 minutes later because the nurse d...
  13. Nurse's aides are running the the floor.

seriously, when an aid has 20 patients and a nurse has 3-4 there are obviously going to be times when a patient takes a pee and sits the urinal down AFTER the aid has already tended to them and the nurse is going to notice first. i have gone into roo...
  14. Nurses, help me! I want to get in the hospital!!!

this is interesting to me. i work in a hospital and got hired there as an inexperienced CNA fresh out of class. i wanted to work there to get experience for nursing school, etc., but i was SHOCKED by how little they pay. nursing homes pay much, much ...
  15. Nurse's aides are running the the floor.

it's funny that i saw this thread because i was just thinking about how frustrated i was after working with the laziest LPN i've ever seen in my life today (i'm a CNA/nursing student). she came and hunted me down at least 5 times today to get me to ...
  16. STOP! Or somebody's going to get hurt!

i'm not a nurse, but as a CNA and a nursing student who is also SURROUNDED by other nursing students when i'm at work, i've learned a few things. first, i had an instructor tell us before i had ever hit the floor, "you're going to see people doing th...
  17. Carry a stethoscope without hanging it on neck

i vote for getting a jacket with bigger pockets. i swear i could put a baby in my pocket and i know for sure a water bottle fits nicely.
  18. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

i had an elderly nurse instructor say one time that our hair is a breeding ground for bacteria and we should wash our hair every day after working. i take a shower as soon as i get home and i wash my hair every day anyway, but i always scrub extra ha...
  19. just wait til you find an old man asleep with a urinal nowhere near his penis. you'll wish you were only having to lift a breast. seriously, things like that become second nature after awhile. it's pretty much daily i have to wake up an old man by sa...
  20. Interpersonal conflict in Nursing

i know how you feel. i'm still trying to overcome my new kid status which is especially tough when my preceptor didn't care for me. it wasn't anything i did - she planned on not liking me. there is one nurse in particular (who happens to be friends w...
  21. Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

AMEN!! i can hear call lights going off when I'm in an isolation room cleaning up a patient and it will go off FOREVER even when there are people sitting at the nurse's station chatting it up. I think half of the time they KNOW what the patient needs...
  22. I got a job! :-)

i doubt it was luck, but probably the fact she made a smart move to work as a tech while in school. congrats!
  23. Fed up with the "rules"

and now you know why they're understaffed.
  24. NA at a hospital?

by the way, you should call your local hospitals and nursing homes in the area. they are usually the ones who offer classes. i did mine through a hospital (where i later got hired) and it was very inexpensive. nursing homes usually offer the classes ...
  25. NA at a hospital?

this is true that you can get a job as a nurse intern which has the same duties as a CNA after your first semester. i personally didn't want to wait because i wanted to get started working so i could see if nursing was something even remotely for me....
