Loss of resistance
Disclaimer- 1st year SRNA with 70 or so epidurals under my belt. All with a glass syringe- At first I used only air just because in my head it seems easier and some mentors did it that way.... but after trying saline with some sticky syringes.... it is better. And I believe it makes the catheter easier to pass, and allows a sooner, more confident LOR. Just my humble opinion

Central Line Placement - no reimbursement for RRNA/SRNA
Thanks for the comments guys. Are any other students having this problem.....maybe elsewhere in the country? I re read the memo today. We can place lines on Midicare pts bc they don't pay crap anyway. (like 15$ for a CL) No placement on BCBS or medicaid. Jess

Central Line Placement - no reimbursement for RRNA/SRNA
Here in arkansas and in tx also I believe..... Medicare and BCBS are now not paying one red cent for any lines placed by RRNA/SRNAs..... so my clinical site wont let us place them unless they are medicaid or private pay or other.... Anybody else go through this change recently? My understanding is this is the insurances choice not state/fed?

Family History of Malignant Hypertension
Tweety I am sure you realize now that it is M. Hyperthermia. That site is a good place for info. Preparation for surgery in the MH is very important but not a huge ordeal, we had a pt this week with a hx and the case went smoothly. Jess

I Am Back
I too would like to say thanks for coming back. I have been on the board for some time, although mostly in a reading/observing role. I enjoy the discussions of a clinical nature and a "higher plane". I used this board in researching the profession, getting into school and now as a RRNA (since Jan). Jess

Labor Epidurals and Sterile Technique
I think a lot do not with epidurals.... some do with spinals. That is sad and I wish we could know for sure how/when the contamination happened. Jess

PDA programs
I agree with the above vote for Anesthesia Constellation..... I am 5 mos into my program and have found it valuable. skyscape.com Jess

anesthesia clipboard
I too was looking for what you are talking about..... to no avail. So then I started a search for the clipboard with calculator and the clear "board" part that has a full page slot for information to go. Thiswas also impossible to find......until the Sevo rep came and gave us exactly what I am describing. Then you just trim the Cusick Anesthesia/Critical Care page and slide it in..... the perfect clipboard except it is a little heavy. Clear as mud.... HTH Jess

For All SRNA's/ RRNA's
Nitecap...great thread and I always enjoy reading your posts, you seem to have your crap together. ASU in Jan, 1 month +, 7 tests into it..... not too bad so far, worried about April when we start clinical time 4 days a week! Coors light, Mic ultra light or whatever is in the pitcher that somebody else paid for Later...

Interview at Arkansas State.
How much experience do you have? The more you have the easier I believe the interview will be. Even so, first off RELAX and BE HONEST. Think about why you really want to be a CRNA. Think about what you have done and will do in preparation for school. How do you deal with stress? Look over CV anatomy, Swan stuff, critical care drugs, pressors, etc... The interview for me one year ago (aug 04) was very laid back. If I didn't know the answer I told them what I did know and told them I didn't know what I didn't. Be confident not cocky! In comparison with other school I think it is on the "easier" side, although they are all stressful. OH and dress up - I am a guy, I wore a suit. GOOD LUCK!

Successful CRNA students consider listing your school, GPA, experience, GRE et.
I just explained that I was not trying to excel in preparation for grad level education (didn't want to do anes) and I was merely trying to get through school. Also I emphasized that my attitude now is different. There was not much reaction, my interview process was very laid back. The reaction was- I was accepted 6 wks later!

Successful CRNA students consider listing your school, GPA, experience, GRE et.
post title said "successfull students" - I start in Jan and hope to be successfull :) GPA:3.0ish yes, yes I know I consider myself lucky and I wasn't considering Anesthesia... GRE: 1040 EXP: 3 yrs ER, will have 1+ yr ICU mix cv/cc/si/mi when school starts in JAN '06 Applied to TWU, ASU. No interview at TWU because of lack of ICU exp (school starts 5 mos sooner than ASU). Accepted at ASU as stated above. Also got an A in the grad level stats - required by ASU. I, as other have said reluctantly post this - pride issue. Advice: I believe the interview to be KEY. On the other hand, to those who are wishing to apply - the "numbers" typically get you to the interview. I believe I explained my undergrad shortcomings in my interview. Also my math and science grades were consistently higher than my gpa reflects (or weighted gpa). There it is, I have heard of students with worse #'s. Like 500-700 GRE scores! Although most schools have a 1000 minimum. I wonder if these were from a long time ago? Jess

Quick questions for all the CRNAs out there

Future of CRNAs
Athlein1 - I agree with your stance, sorry for mudding up the water (only replying to a previous post in this thread). Nothing taken personally. I am trying to learn all I can about political, practice, legal issues that will affect OUR practice in the future. I do not desire to be an apathetic member of this elite group. On the other hand this thread is titled "future of crnas" not "md/crna relations". Also I, being the SOLE provider for my family and taking on more than $100k in debt, consider it wise to look at my FUTURE compensation. Jess

Future of CRNAs
I have been reading this forum for the past year after deciding to persue anesthesia last summer.......I am to attend Arkansas State in Jan. I would like comment on the RN vs CRNA salary gap. ASU graduated its first class this spring with all passing their boards 1st time, average sallary of the class $150,000. I have made about as much money that can be made in the midsouth (staff er/icu RN): $30-35 an hour base, approaching $100k a year. In contrast to the $110-150 STARTING salary for CRNA's. Take into account also that to make $100k as a RN at $35-40/hr requires a lot of hours/ot/bonus pay etc and these rates are usually without benefits, or at max an option to buy basic insurance... and CRNA's with the same OT/call options will make MUCH more with MUCH better benifits in almost all cases. I hope as others have said that I will LOVE anesthesia practice, but I also hop that I will be compensated for the same. This is no different than the way I feel about my current practice. A lot of respect for deepz, gaspassah, and others for thier intelligent and persistant stances for CRNA practice. Jess soon to be SRNA

I interviewed at ASU on the 16th, how did you like it? I liked interviewing with the SRNA's, although I am not sure I was ready. Jess
