    .....very well said. Agree 110%
  2. Hello WhatToDo, I am a ADN RN currently in the process of obtaining my BSN from Texas Tech University School of Nursing. I am doing the online RN to BSN program that is only 2 semesters long and is completely online. When I was at orientation, the dean of the nursing school informed us of a new program that they have just started for people who already have their Bachelors degree in something other than nursing. The program is only 1 year long and is also online. I have posted the website link to the program description and prerequisites courses for you below. Hope this info helps. I am also going to pursue my Masters degree in nursing to become a certified nurse midwife after I complete my BSN. I, like you, want to deliver babies and work with women and children. I know in Houston, there are a lot of opportunities for CNMs and I just wish some of those opportunities would come to San Antonio. Good luck in your adventure! :) http://www.ttuhsc.edu/son/undergrad/secWbsn.aspx
  3. I think it is intresting when an LVN/LPN's education is compared to an RN's education as almost the same, nothing is said otherwise(or it is said "well they are practically the same thing, just a few differences on what an LPN can and cannot do"). But when someone tries to compare CNA/CMA's level of education to that of an LVN/LPN the flood gets open and you can not keep LVN/LPN's silent. Just my observation.

Yes, please let us know how it is going. I am looking into a couple of programs right now and Frontier is one of them so I would love to know how it is. :) Also, where are you from? Do they utilize CNMs a lot where you are from?
  5. Hello all, I have posted before, but I am a RN on my way to CNM. I am looking into a couple of online programs, but before I apply I want to know if the demand for midwives here in Texas, specifically San Antonio, is big enough for me to pursue this degree. I really don't want to move, so I would like to know if there are any nurse midwives who work in San Antonio or anyone who knows a midwife in SA and what they think about the issue. I really have always wanted to become a CNM and I just don't want to go through all the school and then not have a job when I graduate. Please help. I want to start a CNM program in the Fall 2005, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  6. There is no comparison between a RN and a Paramedic.:stone I believe both are just as important as the other, but they are on two different levels. Someone mentioned earlier in this thread about the vast gulf in reference to pay.......lets take a look....here in texas RN's average 50k annually..http://swz.salary.com/salarywizard/layoutscripts/swzl_compresult.asp?zipcode=&metrocode=153&statecode=TX&state=Texas&metro=San+Antonio&city=&geo=San+Antonio%2C+TX&jobtitle=Staff+Nurse+-+RN&search=&narrowdesc=Healthcare+--+Practitioners&narrowcode=HC03&r=salswz_swzttsbtn_psr&p=&s=salary&geocode=&jobcode=HC07000001 Paramedics are averaging 29k a yr..... http://swz.salary.com/salarywizard/layoutscripts/swzl_compresult.asp?zipcode=&metrocode=153&statecode=TX&state=Texas&metro=San+Antonio&city=&geo=San+Antonio%2C+TX&jobtitle=Paramedic&search=&narrowdesc=Healthcare+--+Practitioners&narrowcode=HC03&r=salswz_swzttsbtn_psr&p=&s=salary&geocode=&jobcode=HC07000189 There is a reason in the massive pay difference. Now pay does not designate knowledge, but there are reasons behind the pay. RN's are getting paid for their education and experience. If paramedics were on the same level(education and experience) should not their compensation be the same? These fields are not the same......RN's are nurses, Paramedics are paramedics, RT's are RT's, PT's are PT's, X-ray techs are X-ray tech's. Every one of these professions are on there own levels and are all just as important. Everyone should be proud of the profession in which they choose.
  7. Hello all, I am also a future CNM. I am currently in my BSN program now and working as a RN already as I have my ADN. I am looking into either Frontier or University of Philadelphia. Both of these are online and that is the only way I could do a CNM program as we don't have any here in San Antonio. The only thing I am worried about is that here in San Antonio there are only about 5-6 CNMs in practice and I am worried that I won't have a job after I graduate and get my CNM degree. The job market just doesn't look too appealing right now, but hopefully it will get better.
  8. Bravo, CA CoCoRN and marymary, just bravo....best way i've heard the truth stated in a long time. not just two thumbs up, but all the RNs in the world give you a thumbs up! Nothing can be added are subtracted....awesome!
  9. agreeed helllllllo nurse...........there is one or two, but very few and I mean very few RN's that i know that need a little help. but for someone to just come out and sum up a majority of RN's capabilities to that of nothing.............. is just wrong:stone ....but again this is my opinion and everybody is entitled to one.
  10. wow......what a generalized statement to make about rn's.....i take it you are an lpv/lvn that knows the same if not more than an rn even though less education is involved with your career choice (thats if you are an lpn/lvn)and you should be making the same if not more than rn's(because of course you do everything an rn does).i work in the nicu and we only have 1 lpn/lvn and she or any other lpn/lvn can only work in the level ii nursery as lpn/lvns do not meet the job requirements to even step foot in the level iii nursery. so therefore i guess most of the premature infants probably are not being taken care of even if our lives depended on it as rn's (in direct quote of you, destinystar:uhoh3: ) sorry a little straight forward, but as an rn......just took a little offense. please feel free to respond.
  11. I work in the NICU and we got called down to a delivery a couple days ago for fetal distress and the baby was 11 lb 9 oz and it was a lady partsl delivery:rotfl: ! I don't know how they got that baby out, but it lookied difficult. No wonder the baby was in fetal distress, the way the Drs were pulling on that baby!!
  12. I am an RN in the NICU in San Antonio and I have been an RN now for about 1 1/2 years. I graduated in Dec 2002 and as a new grad started at $18.00/hr and now I am making a little over $19.00/hr but with shift diffs I make up to $26.00 on weekends and after 3pm, etc. Overall the pay for new grads is good, bur of course if depends on where you are in the country. Also, a lot of hopitals have sign-on bonuses but with those you have to sign a contract that you will work for the hospital X amount of years to get your money. p.s. Where in Tx are you at?
  13. It is the same way here in the San Antonio area. Like I said I work at the University Hospital and they put out a lot of BSN RNs but there isn't really a notable difference in job hiring if you ask me. I love working in the NICU but I am trying to find a job in L&D as I am on my way to becoming a Certified nurse midwife and need the L&D experience, but I have had trouble finding a job in L&D because everyone says that they want experience but my reply to them is how or where do I get that experience. It is not so much that they want a BSN but they just want previous L&D experience.
  14. I am a ADN RN and work in the NICU at University Hospital and I had no problem getting hired with my ADN. There were about 10 of us new grads that got hired about a year and a half ago to be a part of a nurse internship in the NICU and 6 out of the 10 of us were ADN RNs. I have noticed that more of the private hospitals here are posting on job lists that they will accept ADN, but prefer BSN. The University Hospital here doesn't make a big fuss over it. I think they just want a good nurse.:)
