why are cna's treated like they are stupid and replaceable?
Sunstreak Texas hires Certified Medication Aides... I was licensed as one... It is a six month program and CMA's cannot pass all meds. CMA's are under the supervision of charge nurse. Also, you were asking about cather insertions from CNA's..the nursing home I worked in Texas we had to do it because the nurse did not want to do it...I outright told her that if state came in I could get fired for changing a colostomy bag but she didnt care and told us aides that "she was not changing it". So what did we do? We changed it.. There is no way I would have left my resident lying there with a dirty bag.... Hope it doesn't happen to her one day.. I do agree that just as there are bad/good CNA's there are also bad/good nurses. The majority nurses I have worked with were wonderful and supportive.

Question about criminal record/ability to find job
I know I have gotten a ticket in my 27 years of living 3 times. The applications I have filled out said ..... Have you been convicted of any criminal offenses? (Do not include for minor traffic) So unless it doesn't ask for traffic then don't put it. I think if you went into job where you had to drive residents/patients around then yes they might need to know this. If you have any questions though ask HR or whomever is hiring you. As far as criminal. YES YES YES always be honest.. Because if you say No even if expunged and they come back years later, or you get a new job and they find out you did have a record you could A) get fired from job, B) lose your license. To me losing a license isn't worth it. Kelli

Need your advice Please (LPN school)
Hi everyone!! I need some assistance please. I am planning on going to school for my LPN. I have one 5 yr old boy and plan on quiting my job to work nights as a CNA while in school. My mom says this is a mistake because it will be cutting my pay in half. Thing is I want this sooooo bad, besides its only for 10 months. Am I rushing into this too fast or should I go ahead and go through with it? I live on my own with my son. I have rent, car note, bills but do have some money saved up to help pay ahead on these things. Please advise when you have a chance. Thanks!!!! Kelli

Medication Aides
i was once a licensed med-aide in texas. had to go through 6 months of school learning pharmacology, parts of body (a&p) and med terminology. i thoroughly enjoyed. we were not able pass out narcotics or any scheduled drugs. i do think though that the cma should work with a licensed nurse on duty. are they letting the cma do everything?

reccomend a good (free) cpr/bcls course in NYC
We had someone come out to the facility I worked at. I recommend calling the American Red Cross in your area and see if they are offering any cpr refresher classes. The ones here are free but I do not know about NYC. Hope this helps.

Living in Creative Poverty in nursing school or on a nurse's salary
thank you, thank you!!! i am a single mom of one soon to be 5yr old boy and he eats me out of house and home. the store we have here has were you can by 5 different kinds of meat for 19.99. so i usually get the link sausage which last about 4 weeks for weekend breakfast, hamburger meat is over 1 pound so i usually get 2 packages, a package of skinned de-boned chicken breasts and porkchops. all that for 20.00, if i bought it @ walmart it would cost me about 30.00. then i wait until they have the sales such as: 10 cans of veggies for $1.00 delmonte i think. i buy some one day and go in the next and buy more so i have enough. this week another store in my area has different cheeses for .99 each. normally its 1.19 on up so i bought some. milk i pay for normally cause it hardly goes on sale and besides it good for him bread is usually .79-.89 get about 2 loaves. i don't really coupon clip unless i really see a good deal. i don't by name brand items. last week my mom, my son and i went to outlet store in vicksburg, ms to get some shoes. i got me and my son some sketchers they both came to 22.00!! i was in awe. i love thrift stores!!!!!! buy good used clothes at a fraction of the cost and besides who is going to know you got it there unless you advertise but then again i'm not ashamed. thanks for this thread!!!

Spooky Happenings on Shift?
Okay when I was in Texas I worked as a CNA in a LTC facility and we had cameras in the lobby. The monitor to view who was coming in and out was on our end. One night as I was finishing up with my residents my charge nurse asked me if I would go check and see who the people in the lobby were visiting. There were 3 of them we could see on the monitor 2 men 1 woman. When I went into the lobby there was noone there. I went outside and noone was there. As I entered to come back into the facility it was chilly in the lobby but I didn't think anything about it. I went back to the nurses station to tell her (charge nurse) that there was noone there. She said yes there are right there and were looking right at you as you were in the lobby. She said their bodies turned towards me as I was entering outside and as I came inside they turned again to watch me go back to the station. Too freaky!!! ................................................................................................... Another one happened at the facility I didn't see but one of the CNA's were telling me about it and several saw it. This CNA was about to do her last rounds when she saw Mrs. XXXXXZX walking in the hallway barefooted. She told the little lady that it was time to go to bed and did she need some help. The little lady turned to her smiled and kept on walking. The CNA figured she was happy about something but didn't know what. Well when she went in to check the other resident in the lady's room she saw that same little lady who had passed 10-15 minutes earlier. The CNA quit working there that night!!

Watch what you wish for!! LOL
A nursing assistant, floor nurse, and charge nurse from a small nursing home were taking a lunch break in the break room. In walks a lady dressed in silk scarfs and wearing large polished stoned jewlery. "I am 'Gina the Great'," stated the lady. "I am so pleased with the way you have taken care of my aunt that I will now grant the next three wishes!" With a wave of her hand and a puff of smoke, the room was filled with flowers, fruit and bottles of drink, proving that she did have the power to grant wishes before any of the nurses could think otherwise. The nurses quickly aurgued among themselves as to which one would ask for the first wish. Speaking up, the nursing assistant wished first. "I wish I were on a tropical island beach, with single, well-built men feeding me fruit and tending to my every need." With a puff of smoke, the nursing assistant was gone. The floor nurse went next."I wish I were rich and retired and spending my days in my own warm cabin at a ski resort with well groomed men feeding me cocoa and doughnuts." With a puff of smoke, she too was gone. "Now, what is the last wish?" asked the lady. The charge nurse said," I want those two back on the floor at the end of the lunch break."

Thermometer jokes
What did the nurse say when she found a rectal thermometer in her pocket? "Some a$$hole has my pen!" What's the difference between an oral thermometer and a rectal thermometer? The taste. Why did the nurse always insist on using the rectal thermometer to obtain temperatures? She was taught in nursing school to always look for her patient's best side.

Help with hopeless horrible nurse's aides
i was once a cna in a texas and i absolutely loved it! loved the nurses i worked with the other cna's i worked with as well as my residents. like our teacher told us when i was becoming a cna we are the front men of the war. we deal daily with the residents so if mrs. jones were to have a bed ulcer or bruising the next day i would tell my nurse. also, i worked a hall of 27 residents myself; on the occassion that i did need help putting some of my people to bed i would ask another cna and they would be helpful and vice versa.. sure i got to sit behind the nurses desk when i was done, i may have watched tv with her, we (my friend and i) may have gone to smoke (when i did smoke) but i will tell you what i made my rounds every 2 hours, passed ice, answered lights, adl's and charting as well. i did not have a wet resident on my side. my nurse would do her rounds (bed checks) while i was charting i & o..come back to the desk and do what she had to do. i think its all about personality, determination and hard work. if they see that you will bust your butt doing your job and helping others as well then there won't be any problems.

Medical Asst vs Nurse
Pls dont take it out of context. I do agree with you about bad nurse vs good nurses. My point was just that if your a Med Asst then the colleges shouldnt be posting them as nurses. Two completely different spectrums there and one isnt better than the other. Sorry if I caused any hardship never meant too.
