Can you be a PHN if you are a new grad?
Do you mind providing a link for a particular PHN I job in the Central Valley? I can't seem to find anything. I'd really appreciate it!

Can you be a PHN if you are a new grad?
Hi! I recently read that you were hired as a new grad straight into a CA county as a PHN. I, too, am very, very interested in entering the public health field. I graduated with a BSN in 2010, worked less than a year in a hospital setting, and now am looking for a PHN job. It's where my true passion is! I've applied to every county in my area (LA, Riverside, Orange County, San Diego, and San Bernardino). My application status says "placed on eligible list" but it's been over a month and still no response. What do you suggest I do at this point? How can I make my resume "shine" with the little RN experience I have? In the meantime, I've resorted to studying for the GRE in order to apply to MPH programs for the Fall of 2013, in case that may help me. Thanks for your help!

UCLA New Grad Program 2010
I got offered a position at SM UCLA for the cardiac step-down unit!!! So excited! I had interviews with Liver Tx ICU and Neurosurgery as well, so if anybody has any questions about those units, feel free to PM me. I'd be more that happy to help! Hang in there everyone! They're still calling and setting up interviews :) Crossing my fingers for everyone!

UCLA New Grad Program 2010
I have some info as well. The nurse recruiter told me that it's just unfortunate that there aren't more choices for med-surg units that are hiring this time. Currently, cardiac step-down at SM is filling up and Neurosurgery at RR is still completely open. For neuro, apparently the manager didn't hire any new grads last year and they don't usually hire any. Don't know why. Maybe because it's such a complex/specialized unit. Not suitable for new grads? Hmm... misscaliRN: No biggie. Hmm, are you able to view my message at least? I left my email address in one of them if you don't mind shooting me an email instead. Lemme try again :)

New Grad/RN Program in California
BridgetvdpGn: I know exactly how you feel. People keep telling me that having my BSN gives me such an advantage, but to be honest, it's not really helping me out right now. I don't know what hospitals are looking for. And I'm not sure if I should try to get a part-time job or volunteer in the meantime just so I can seem "active" (in my resume). Or should I resort to searching out of state? Or how about start off at a nursing home? I don't know what to do :/

UCLA new RN residency program 2010
i say wait until it shows on your app status online "waitlisted" or "not selected" before you lose hope! you never know, they could just be falling behind or maybe others are already getting job offers somewhere else, so it'll open up more spots. Keep positive! :)
