  1. Interesting post. I, too, have been told I was "not a good fit." Can anyone define ?? And WHY, (please WHY) would anyone want to be a ("nurse") notwithstanding my 33 years in this "profession". ? Need I "roll over","sit", "fetch". Oh yeah, it's YOUR,Mother, Father...(fill in the blank...) and YOU treat me like CRAP....!! YOU'RE RIGHT !! It's not a good fit. My life, my sanity, my heart.... But then, I'm TOO OLD for the Peace Corps. Would that I could...eyedrops in Africa..soap & water in Namibia...condoms in South Africa. I've wasted my life/energy for thankless/privaledged brats...and yes, I'm a "baby-boomer". Only wish I could start over. But, then, don't we all?
  2. Idealist, not realist. Bought into the hyperbole. Nursing? Ya gotta be kiddin' me. After 33 years as an RN.............NO WAY.
  3. Gotta love the old "black&white". Worked everytime. Easy, cheap, effective. Banned by endoscopists though !! (NEVER turn your back on someone with a "scope) !!
  4. I remember starched white uniforms, backrubs, fresh ice water, cookies& flowers at the nursing station, AND.... Please and Thank you were common in the patients' lexicon. Along those lines...I never could spell very well. Wrote "hospital" instead of "hospitality" on the application ! (Sigh)
  5. jUST, exactly, WHAT IS A NURSE? ASK THE GENERAL PUBLIC. Your petty egos and inflated sense of SELF denigrate the profession. Been "in it" too long...and have my share of misery, to let this triviality go unanswered.!
  6. Interesting comment. Perhaps it could be expanded to include "nurse managers", nursing directors, nurse administrators, nurse "educators" and ALL of their non-clinical ilk. At the risk of "flaming" from my non-clinical colleagues... BEEN THERE LATELY? DONE THAT LATELY? BTW: We're "short-staffed", can you lend a hand?
  7. "role model"? Since when is one's choices (even if deleterious to oneself) considered a factor in job performance? Especially if it does not impact in any way one's performance. Hypocrisy (me:NO) Pontificating (you:yes)
  8. Bedside nursing is a "minefield", filled with lottery winner wannabes. Am I paranoid? No. Just an experienced realist.
  9. "Frowned upon...?" Why should a licensed, experienced, RN NOT be allowed to work as a CNA? In a tight labor market, perhaps this represents a realistic (though undesirable) choice. MD=RN=LVN=CNA. What "qualifies a CNA" when someone with more experience/knowledge is willing to work for less? I'd rather be a CNA, using my knowledge/expertise, than an unemployed RN trying to find work.
  10. be verry, verry careful. fear rules the employment marketplace. retribution rules "management". it's a minefield out there. tread lightly, or boom ! (unemployed via principle) [email protected]
  11. Hi !! Just got home after the most ridiculous assignment of my (33 year) career. As an agency nurse, I accepted an assignment at at local nursing home (night shift). Bottom line --- 58 patients (that's right 58 !!) on my floor. Only RN in the facility. LVNs worked other floors. No shift supervisor. Tube feedings, 27 chemsticks, 15 scheduled insulin dosages & (perhaps) 30 scheduled meds. THANK GOD, no "incidents". All alive and in their beds/wheelchairs by shift's end. Had benefit of three CNA's, but they are restricted to direct patient care issues. No glucometer, no med techs, NADA. Perhaps it's time to go back to ICU/ER/PACU (25 years) with my pitiful 1-2 patients and essentially sit on my BUTT !! I'm BUSHED !! Don't ever talk to me about "difficult workloads". BEEN THERE. Give it a try all of you who feel overworked. [email protected]
  12. Why do we do this? After 33 years as an RN, I humbled, disaffected. discouraged, ... Running out of "dis" word It's a J.O.B. I have become the very person that I've despised in my career... Wouldn't give a plug nickel for the "newbies".
  13. Let me repeat myself... I should have gone into the "hospitality" industry. At the very least, one could "earn" tips. Your Momma, YOUR DADDA, your Abuelita. You CARE ?? Not MY problem anymore. Me, my pups and mine. Would consider working in the sub-sahara, Indonesia, or where-ever, where my efforts meant something. The "thread" is nursing.... Say something positive. I DARE YOU !!
  14. I honestly believe that, after all these years (33) as a registered nurse....NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would choose this "profession". I'm trying to leave. And actively discourage ANYONE (absent monetary considerations) from entering.
  15. Nursing is analogous to "walking in a minefield". From the moment you "apply" you are scrutinized. HR, Admin.Staff (peer interviews). Doctors/patients/family/coworkers/management.............everyone looks for "weakness"........... This in a "business" that professes to care about "people". I'm people, too. Have spent over 30 years caring for others. Would I do it again? NO!!! But I need to make a living...doing what I no longer believe in. Myself, my friends, indeed my dogs, top the list of my concerns. I'm appalled at the direction "health care" has taken. I look EVERYDAY for alternative income. To the newcomers....be VERY, Very aware of what you're getting into. It WILL break your heart.
