If you work full time as an RN (3 12hr shifts/week) and are divorced with school age children, how does your custody agreement look? Im a night shift nurse and this may be in the cards for me but honestly I cant figure out how custody would work. My possible ex is a good dad, I would be ok with 50/50 custody if need be and I think he would be amenable to be somewhat flexible. Thanks in advance for any input!

My hospital is getting ready to revamp out call bell system. Currently it's the basic patient calls out to a central desk and the person who answers either takes care of the issue or calls the nurse on her Spectralink pocket phone (think Nokia from 2000). They are changing to a new system we don't quite understand, but there will be different buttons for the patient to choose depending on their need? Also we will have iPhones that we get at the beginning of our shift. Is anyone using this system and what feedback do you have? Thanks in advance!

Will they throw out a male OB Md? Again, our male OB RNs have been well received by patients and their families. It's been pretty refreshing!

We have 2 male nurses on our L/D unit and they are wonderful! Only one patient has declined having a male nurse so that has been refreshing. One of the things we do is present them as we would any other shift change nurse "This is L, he will be you nurse today " as opposed to "Are you ok with a male nurse?" Our patients have been very receptive and spoken highly of the care they have received. So far so good!!

My best advice is to remain focused on your tasks at hand and handle each new section as it comes to you. In the case of nursing school, trying to look ahead at what you should know is almost impossible. Things like care plans, drug logs, and nursing diagnoses will make more sense to you after you enter a nursing program and your instructors guide you through. Continue to do your absolute best with your pre-reqs so you can have the chance at finding out what these new concepts are all about! Good luck!

Just keep checking each day. They were available to order about a month before classes started and came in the week beforehand I believe. Congratulations!

From what I recall, the geology was a VERY VERY small part of the science section. You would do well to know your basic conversion measurements, yes. They will give you some of the ones that are more obscure and you have to do the math. My test had NO physics, and no heavy formulas like you mentioned for energy, work, etc) and the Chemistry was very basic. (i.e. looking at an element on the periodic table and being able to know who many protons, neutrons, etc). Mine had labels from medicine bottles, they would provide a scenario about a person who had done something against the dosage recommendation (took it too often, took too many, stored it improperly) and you would have to pick out what they had done wrong. We had A/P 1 (4 credits) one semester, then A/P 2 (4 credits) another. I loved it that way!

Yes, I read the entire article. Perhaps my feelings are biased because I know dozens of families who have gone through varying levels of fertility treatments and none of them would have reduced from 2 to 1. Not for social reasons, not for ease of parenting, not to be able to "love the one remaining child enough" (really?). They knew going in to the procedure what the possibilities were. I guess I can keep in mind that in the TOTAL number of twin pregnancies out there that exist because of fertility treatments, this small sliver of idiots who are choosing to reduce (and I'm pro-choice!) doesn't even come close to representing the real hearts behind reproductive medicine. Here's a tip for the women who don't want to have multiples following a fertility treatment: DON'T PUT MORE THAN ONE IN! Don't take meds that increase your chances of having multiples. You rolls the dice, you takes your chances...

Sounds a bit dramatic to me, which is probably exactly what the "author" intended. For the record, actual adults going through reproductive assistance are counseled and topics like this are discussed at length. A person who had gone through extensive fertility treatments doesn't reduce from twins to a singleton, sorry guys. They are fully aware from the get go of the possibility of multiples. Beat the abortion horse to death somewhere else. :)

I start my 2 yr ADN week after next and I'm really excited, confident, and ready to go! The only topic that is looming out there for me is the Foley cath procedure. Poop, vomit, pee, blood, none of that really phases me (Im a mom of 3 young kids) but I have also had 4 catheters in my lifetime and I remember each one...VIVIDLY. Maybe that is what is scaring me a bit, the fact that I know how unpleasant they are. I'm sure it will be like so many other things that once I am trained properly and even after doing my first real one, the scariness will go away...right? :) What procedure or situation is giving you some nerves?

Correction: The scholarship I am receiving is awarded to 5-10 individuals, my bad! Im glad the hospital thinks so highly of the program I am beginning. :)

Obviously it varies from program to program. I am receiving a scholarship through a hospital covering my tuition. I had to apply for this scholarship specifically (i.e. not with the pooled application I also submitted for more general scholarships) and it is only available to one student a semester. I agreed to work for the hospital in an RN position for one year for each year I receive these funds, I need to meet their employment requirements (which I plan to do, it is a great hospital) and should they still not have a job for me, the contract is forgiven.

The scholarship from our supporting hospital states that for each semester you receive the funds you will give them one year of employment if they so desire, after passing the NCLEX. Should you choose not to work for them, you must repay all those funds within 2 months.

I just got back from All-Med Express on Midlo Tpk and they were awesome. Great customer service, saved me a ton of money on a stethoscope and my sphygmo., free custom ordering of scrubs with plenty to try on first, all around good experience. Worth checking out if you need any of the basics! They also have a location on the West End but I havent been to that one. Shop locally!

Agreed. I had to shake my head when we got the long list of chapters they recommended we read before the start of class only to learn 5 minutes later that the books more than likely wouldnt be available until a week before classes start. Guess I know what I'm doing that week! Read, read, read lol. Mini-Murse, are you in the traditional or HDEP track?

Agreed. Also, the school skeletons/bones/muscle men could be made available to us as needed in the bio lab(i.e. before an exam) should we feel the need to get more hands on to study. Is this available to you?

At orientation it sounded like books probably wont be available at the bookstore until about a week (2 if we are lucky) before school starts. Im going to bite the bullet and do the book box, that way I KNOW I have everything Im supposed to. Im going with a midrange Littman, with my name engraved on it to help lessen the chance of it walking away! Reviews on Amazon.com of other brands have been very helpful though. :)
