Hello all, this may have been asked ad naseum but...I am considering applying for a position as a school nurse. Do any of you work during the summer to supplement your income? I currently work in Med-Surg and it is killing me physically so I want to get out. However, I do not want to lose my skills and will probably need extra income because our state doesn't pay school nurses much. I was thinking I could work during the school year then work at the local children's hospital part time during the summer. So, what has been your experience?

  3. I live in downtown Little Rock because I prefer to be around many types of people and the arts. I am a hard-core liberal and Christian, and have many friends of the same persuation. Our kids go to a public magnet elementary school that provides an excellent education. I may sound a little bitter but I am so tired of racism and wish our state would just grow up and move on. On a more positive note, there is natural beauty in every direction and large cities are not far away (Memphis, Dallas, St. Louis). I work at UAMS and get great benefits.
  4. I feel your pain, I graduated in May and you have described my shift and doubts to a tee. I have been told that it will get better and I will find my pace. Thankfully I have great charge nurses who help and are there to lift me up. I try to watch the seasoned nurses and learn from them. Already I have improved in organization and charting. My greatest fear is making a rookie mistake and going to court. Hang in there. I am going to watch this thread for some good advice too.
  5. I work in Med-Surg at a teaching hospital in Arkansas and the ratio is a maximum of 1 to 5. ICU is 1 to 2.
  6. How did you get results on Pearson Vue? I have looked all over the site for it. I took my test on Friday the 7th and I have to wait until Tuesday to get official results from the State Board of Nursing. Bummer.
  7. Cummulative, you can retake courses and use the higher grade though.
  8. I just graduated from UAMS and was discussing this with an instructor a few weeks ago. She said they usually have around 300 applicants and admit roughly 110. It is determined strictly by GPA and everyone in our class had a 3.0 or higher.
  9. I am interested. I start work on a kidney/liver transplant floor as a new grad in July.
  10. UAMS and the VA have programs for nursing students to work in. I did a summer externship between my two years and got paid almost 11.00 an hour, not to mention great experience.
