Davita was my livelyhood for many years before I got tired of the horribly understaffed, dangerous working conditions and "number crunching". And when I say understaffed I don't mean short on hired employees, I'm referring to workers getting cut early and sent home, leaving 1 tech and and 1 rn alone with 10-12 patients by the end of the day. This company would do anything to save a damn buck. Yes I realize this is the case with most Fortune 500 type corporations, imho these types of for-profit "businesses" have no place in healthcare.

I just quit Davita a couple months ago after 5 years, this doesn't surprise me one bit. Kudos for that doc and rn for taking a stand.

Hello Dedicated! I've been a dialysis tech for 5 years, and am a pre-nursing student also. I would recommend you go for it! Yes it is very fast-paced, the days are long, and dialysis is definitely not for everyone, but the experience you'll gain will benefit you as a future nurse! You will acquire a TON of direct patient care experience, learn how to manage your time and stay organized, not to mention you'll be working side by side with RN's who you can learn a lot from! Recently I was in the hospital for an out-patient procedure, and struck up a conversation with an RN. When I told her I worked as a dialysis tech she beamed, and told me how her husband had been on dialysis for a few years (got a transplant thank goodness), and how much respect she had for the techs. Made me feel so good to hear this from a nurse, I've always had a tremendous respect and admiration for RN's as well! :) Good luck to you in whatever path you take! I also wanted to mention that you will become very attached to some of your patients... You will see them for hours on end 3 days a week! Some will become almost like family to you. Also, you'll have patients pass away from time to time, which never gets easier, but you learn to cope better...

Hello all! Advice from other students or nurses would greatly be appreciated! Here's my situation; I currently work part-time as a dialysis tech, and am attending a local university in hopes of applying to their BSN program... I am now REALLY second guessing myself, as their BSN admittance is highly competitive and only admit a handful of students once a year (shocker, huh?) and I'm not doing as well in my classes as I'd hoped I'd do... I have really put forth effort into studying, and am a decent student otherwise, but.... Chem and algebra have taken a toll on me, and my final grades will hardly be competitive, passing, but not competitive. I've gotten discouraged, and although I've tried to stay positive, in reality I know I probably don't stand a chance at getting accepted... So, here's my plan B.... I have pretty much all my gen ed's done for the university, and have looked into their BS in community health education program, which I could finish up in probably a year and a half tops... In the meantime, I could get on the wait-list at my local community college for their ASN (which is averaging at 2 years now), and by the time I earn my bachelors I'd be ready to start. I'm wanting to get into community health nursing anyways, so I thought maybe this would be of great benefit to me (I know CH RN jobs aren't easy to come by , especially as a new grad). So.... Does my plan sound reasonable? Crazy? A huge waste of time and money? I've been gradually working towards nursing school for years now, on and off, I took a break for a while to get married and have 3 kids (at least that's my excuse...). Also, I'm not quite over the hill yet, but at 32 I know I'm no spring chicken either, and would like to get this show on the road and FINALLY become a nurse!!! Sorry this is long-winded, this is such an internal struggle as many of you are probably familiar with.... I just get so down on myself over all this (bad habit), and am so afraid of making the wrong choices. Thanks for reading!

I've been in patient care for almost a decade now, I've progressed from a phleb, to M.A., to PCT.... finally becoming a nurse seems like the logical next step for me. I never had a "calling", nor do I have a strong desire to save the world. I just love what I do! And I could never in a million years imagine working in another field, I'm in this for the long haul...

I've found a lot of info about Wayne State on here, the admissions staff at the CON are very helpful too. Jelson, have you been to an info session yet? I missed the last one because I was out of town, but plan on going to the next one in September. WSU's BSN is my 1St choice, but I've been looking into possibly applying to OU and EMU as to cast my net a little further...

Hello! I'm planning on applying for the traditional BSN. I've taken a lot of my pre-reqs already at HFCC, and will be starting at WSU in a couple weeks!

There's a volunteer clinic in my area that treats the working uninsured, which is ran by a local (but large) health system, which gets it's funding from various sources (private and GOVT grants). The docs and MA's all work voluntarily, most hold full time positions and have their own practices. This clinic was created to meet a dire need, for a large population who are working, but who themselves cannot afford insurance or whose employers cannot. Healthcare reform was created in part for these people, this particular population which has increased due to the recession, and I'm sure the kindhearted docs who volunteer their services will gladly welcome these patients into their practices once they have insurance. BTW I'm considered "obese" according to that stupid BMI, but am otherwise strong and healthy as an ox....

Hello! Monroe County CC has an LPN program, so does Schoolcraft but I think they have a long wait. Also there's the Riverview Institute LPN program through Oakland U.... Good luck!

Hello all! I've been working as a PCT for Davita for 3 years, and am curious about working for Fresenius... Anyone on here ever work for, or are currently working for, this company? If so, how do you like it? Or better yet, has anyone here worked for both companies, and can give me a bit of a comparison? Any information would be very helpful... TIA! :)

Hi Sunflower! Hmmm I have those but my psych might not meet the 5 year cutoff.... Thanks for checking it out, I'm going to call that number and see if I can get a little more info on it. I'm wondering how much tuition is... This program would be great considering how close to home it is! I know a lot of MA's that went to DBI and liked it. :)

I'm going to! I've asked around and keep hearing different on this matter, I wanna hear it from the horses mouth! If I can't take those classes either on campus or online in spring/summer then I may have to take them elsewhere.... :uhoh21:

I'll most likely end up taking it online then, I may even attempt chem online too..... I really dont want to put these classes off any longer than I have to, especially chem because I'm hoping to get on the waiting list this summer! Also, are they still saying 12 to 18 months for the waitlist?

I don't think I'd do well with online classes at all, especially a more difficult class like chem! I'll have to wait until spring to take it, does the teacher your referring to have a very irish sounding last name by chance? I'm about to take A&P 1, class starts monday! Anyone take that at HFCC? Any advice? I took Bio 130 at HFCC years ago and did alright, I heard the A&P's are comparable to that.. I'm also taking Microbiology...

II'm wanting to apply for OCC's LPN program, Anne36 aren't you about to start it? Is the LPN program a little less intense as far as working full time while attending goes? I work 3 12's, and if need be I'll work every Saturday to free up my week days. Do you know what your schedule will be like?
