finding preceptors
I am going to start cold calling offices and dropping in. for those have had success finding preceptors in the past, did you take a cover letter, resume, course objectives? gave you give me a example of the cover letter? or if anyone can help me find a preceptor in Northern Nevada that would be great!

SICU at Renown in Reno - is my recruiter hiding something?
I moved to Reno 9 months ago and like it. I use the Renown system and have had good experiences all around (x-ray, vascular, urgent care, primary care). I work at another facility in town. Even though Reno is known for gambling it is very close to Tahoe and the city is big enough that you dont have to be exposed to the tourist, gambling parts unless you want to. Lots of great restaurants, shopping, etc.

Chloraprep
chloraprep is used for surgery and can be applied without sterile gloves on. like any skin prep containing alcohol, chloraprep must dry before drapes are applied. where I work now, chloraprep is what most general surgeons use.

has anyone previously worked as an endoscopy tech?
a endo tech holds the scope during colonoscopies and EGDs and then cleans the scopes. that is their main duties.

OR Pet peeves
people nurses or techs who try to skate passed the rules. for example "we don't count instruments on open appys here." techs or nurses who flirt almost to the point of offering themselves to the docs or docs who due the same. please, this is a place of work not a singles bar finding out that even though the case cart has been "checked" twice and the tech in room checks everything as he/she is opening, there is still stuff missing. being called in 45 minutes before the surgeon wants to start the case when the tech in house has known for 3 hours about the case. hearing 2 co-workers bash others. if you need to vent, be discrete. griping and complaining loudly in the core is not a good idea

"TIME BACK" vs. Overtime $$ pay
if you are being forced to take comp time for overtime worked, i think that is illegal. i would discuss this with your manager and state that you would like receive $$ from now on. may be this needs to be addressed with human resources. you are being denied fair compensation. it is different if you are offered a choice between comp time and $$.

My dream is turning out to be a nightmare!
it is not ideal to work while in nursing school, but you can do it. I worked all through school and I am married and have 3 kids. it is hard, but you can do it. there are lots of scholarships out there and many go unused because no one applies for them. research scholarships and grants. may be you can work part time. other options include national guard or reserves.

Question for Nurses, or more specifically ones that work or have worked in OR
i am thinking that it is impossible to give alcohol via IV. first, how would you do it? mix whiskey with NS? i think alcohol would be very damaging to veins.

Question for Nurses, or more specifically ones that work or have worked in OR
i have worked in the OR and in the ER and I have never seen a dr order alcohol for a pt to prevent DTs. if the pt is haivng surgery, anesthesia knows how to manage pts who are alcoholics. i have never heard of administering alcohol via IV. it usually takes 2 to 3 days (even up to 4 days) for DTs to start. there are drugs to manage DTs.

Where in CO can I get into a program fast that is also cheep and with a low GPA?
CSU in Pueblo usually is easy to get into. they do have an accelerated program for people with a bachelor's. it is probably cheaper than other 4 year programs.

Evans Army Hospital or Air Force Academy Hosp?
I really don't think it is that hard to get a job at Evans. I applied there over a year ago and was offered a position, but declined it because I had waited 2 months to hear from Evans and in that time, I had accepted another position. But, I am working at Evans now in a different position than I was offered last year. I do know other RNs who has gotten jobs there too. There is an agency who does supplies staff at Evans. I think if you want to work there, you have to be persistent, you have to call the head nurse for the department which you apply to, and you have to be patient. When I interviewed for the family ward, the nurses on the peer board did not have prior military experience and I don't think they had spouse preference. just remember it takes a while to get hired at either place. :) ps. it is www.usajobs.gov for the official website for all federal gov jobs.

RN thinking of traveling to Colorado...need advice
Canon city is a small town. I moved here 13 years ago. It is considered to be in the banana belt of Colorado. the winters are pretty mild and it is within commuting distance from Colorado Springs and Pueblo. My husband is a runner (has done ultras and marathons) and has started biking. There is a large group who bike (road) weekly and are starting a running club.

Relationships vs Gastic Bypass Surgery
unfortunately, it is common for people to end relationships after batriatic surgery. I work with a surgeon who does alot of the procedures and he has commented that it does happen. it is unfortunate for the person's family and love ones.

Things you'd like to say to your co-workers, but never would ....
if you dont what do to or have forgotten, ask! stop panicking at every small thing. it only upsets your coworkers and makes the surgeon doubt your ability. give your coworkers some credit. we may not be the "superuser" or have been to over 50 different computer training sessions or to weekly computer meetings, but we use the computer every day while you are gone and know what we are doing. stop acting like you're my boss. you are not! you are my peer. look that word up. it does not mean superior, supervisor, or lord. when i say i don't need your help, really i don't need your help. so please stop hovering. even if I did need help, frankly i wouldn't ask you because your lack of short term memory scares me and if you're in my room it would only stress me and my team and i would have to double check what you have done.
