  1. Should be 1:2, sometimes 1:1 depending on what's going on (Balloon pump, CVVH, etc.)
  2. Congrats on landing an interview with NYP! Happy for you :) I can't even get one! I've been applying for a lot of positions now for quite some time and can't get anything very discouraging! If you do not mind me asking, what's your experience?
  3. I was a ASN and just graduated with my BSN. I have 4-5 years experience in the hospital and have a hard time finding a job! I really prefer NYP columbia or cornell but I can never land an interview There aren't even that much openings like before. Is NYP going through something anyone know?
  4. Hey congrats! Can I ask what unit you interviewed for and what experience you have? I have been trying nonstop to score an interview for a full time position in NYP (Cornell and Columbia). And nothing! I have 5 years experience in telemetry with experience floating to coronary care unit.
  5. Do you plan to do psych long term? If not, then I say don't go for it especially if you will be taking a pay cut. Keep applying for other hospital positions. There are hospitals that hire occupational nurses for their employee health services.
  6. I just got my BSN and I have almost 5 years experience in Med-Surg Telemetry with experience floating to Coronary Care Unit and Post-interventional unit. I've applied to similar units in NYP and when I look at the status of my applications, it says "Not selected." Very frustrating and discouraging Anyone know why they would not select me? I have all the preferences and requirements they listed. So to those with Associates, having a Bachelors did not make it easier (for me at least). I guess I have to be patient. But still go for your BSN! It's the way to go! More doors will open up.
  7. I have 5 years experience in the hospital working on a telemetry, med-surg unit. I trained a bit in the MICU and CCU. I'm currently in a BSN program and planning to pursue my Master's but not yet sure if I want informatics or Education. I'm considering nurse educator because I precepted new grad nurses and realized I really like to teach in the clinical setting! Not sure if I should be a clinical instructor for a school of nursing or be a nurse educator in the hospital. Which one is better? Which usually pays more?
  8. Definitely adequate staffing. I work on a tele/med-surg unit and the days we don't have staff are the busiest and make you want to quit nursing all together! But the days we have enough staff with a 1:4 1:5 ratio and 2 aides and a secretary..those are the best days and you feel like you can do your job right and leave work like you did everything.
  9. Don't give up! I have no idea what they look for. I have 5 years acute care experience, I will finish my BSN in 3 months. A recruiter called me the other day saying they were interested. When they asked about my BSN I told them I'll be finished in 3 months. Then she said she would save my information and told me to apply again when I get my BSN. I almost wanted to say, "Did you even read my resume? Why even call me and get me all excited?" At least they showed interest in my experience! But it was like a tease.
  10. I work in a NJ hospital. Non-union
  11. Hey guys, I'm going to be done my BSN this summer and plan to apply in both NYP and Mount Sinai health systems. Has anyone ever worked for both? Which is better for nurses? Which one should I go for if I apply to both and happen to get offers for both? I know Mount Sinai is with NYSNA, but what about NYP? Which health system takes care of their nurses better?
  12. Very true. In the NYP online application they ask you your preferred salary range. I put something low for the hospital but reasonable for my living. Even if I get one dollar or more an hour than my current job, I will be ok. I only make $30/hr at my current job and I have 5 years experience. So anything above that would be better!
  13. I'm on the same boat, except I have 5 years experience. My biggest disadvantage though: I only have an Associates Degree. Will be done my BSN this July! And it is about WHO YOU KNOW. Even though I know some people who work in both NYP and Mount Sinai health systems as nurses or nurse practitioners, that isn't even enough. I asked them to help me, but they said they would have to know someone higher up just to help me.
  14. Yes! I agree, ChrisB718. We all took the same test so ADN's and BSN's should have equal chances of getting a job. It's all about experience, not degrees.
  15. WOW! Congrats, MCNURSE631! I really want to get a job with this health system. Just curious, were there any ADN's that were hired (but enrolled in BSN)? They emailed me few months back saying I have the experience but want someone who is already BSN. Frustrates me because in the online application when they ask the highest degree an applicant has, there's an option that says "eligible to obtain BSN in 3 months" which is me! But I always get the status "Application received; not selected" when I submit my application 3 more months and I'll be a BSN. Hopefully I will get something *fingers crossed*
  16. I can't wait to finish my BSN and apply for positions in NYP! Anyone here with an Associate's degree with years of experience but in a BSN program ever get hired at NYP? I am not giving up! I really want to get a job in a NYP hospital (preferably Columbia or Weill Cornell) I only have my Associates with 5 years experience in MS/Tele (exp floating to CCU) and will be finished my BSN in the next 3 months. I know they strictly want BSN. But what's the point of putting a "eligible to obtain BSN in 3 months" option in the online application when I know they won't entertain you? It's just frustrating. I even got a tease email! Someone from Human Resources emailed me with a position that I was interested in. I was honest and told them I do not have a BSN at this time and that I will be finished this summer (in 3 months). She replied back and said "We want someone with a BSN already. You have the experience. We will keep your information and call us back when you are finished."
  17. Hello everyone, There's an opening at the hospital I currently work at for an Employee Health Nurse. I am thinking about putting in a transfer for it. I'm thinking I have a good chance because my hospital is small. It's part time, 8am-4pm. I worked on a telemetry unit for 4 years and I feel like I need a break from bedside. I would be losing my full-time benefits, but I'm single and I'm thinking about just getting my own insurance anyway. My question is: for all the employee health nurses out there who work at a hospital, what's your daily routine like? I don't have experience in this field, so what should I review?
  18. Not sure if this is the appropriate thread but what's the nurse to patient ratio like at mount Sinai (any of their hospitals, specifically telemetry units)
  19. Most places want a year or two of experience for per diem or float pool. But some hospitals may hire new grads...if they're desperate. Kind of like my hospital. They just hired a bunch of new grads or nurses with no hospital experience for float pool. Sorry but I feel it's a bad idea to put new grads on float pool. I mean you learn a lot seeing how different units work but I feel like you have to stay on one unit for at least a year so you have a routine and be more comfortable. We have a bunch of new grads for float pull orienting now and I can see them struggling, already in tears and wanting to quit. Only been 2 weeks for them
  20. I've been wanting to get into NYP system on a med-surg floor but after reading this I'm second guessing now. I have five years experience with Med/Surg and Telemetry.I'm used to the 7-8 patients. I would think a prestigious hospital like NYP cornell or columbia, they would take care of their nurses. I guess not? I like Med-Surg/Telemetry and I don't mind taking 7 patients once in a while but if its an everyday thing, then maybe I should look somewhere else. I need a break. How are the nursing assistants in NYP? Do they do vital signs? Do they chart? How many usually on the unit per shift?
  21. I have five years experience (Med/Surg, Telemetry) and I'm having difficulty as well finding work in NYC. I really want something in the NYP system (Weill Cornell or Columbia)
  22. Sounds like the floor I am on now. We can't retain any nurses. Nurses come and go as fast the patients do. The turnover of nurses is crazy! They don't last more than 6 months. I lost count how many nurses we lost on our floor. We barely have any seasoned nurses on the floor. I was already orienting new nurses when I was less than a year on the floor! Some shifts they will schedule brand new nurses together with no seasoned nurse. Or if there is a seasoned nurse that nurse ends up being pulled to the critical care floors because they're short as well!! I don't know how I lasted this long. The management know what's the problem. We have no support staff sometimes. They're hiring nurses but the problem is they're hiring brand new nurses straight out of school. Seems to me that hospitals are more worried about numbers and saving money rather than patient safety. It's scary. It puts a strain on us nurses, which in turn affects patient care and the desired outcomes are not achieved. HAPPY NURSES = HAPPY PATIENTS = HIGHER SATISFACTION SCORES = REIMBURSEMENT FOR HOSPITAL!
  23. How about NYP/Queens on a med/surg floor? Anyone have experience there? I started a topic about this but saw this thread as well. Thought I'd ask here also since its part of NYP system
  24. For nurses who currently work or ever worked at NYP/Queens.... how was it working there? Pros and cons? Do they do self scheduling there? What's the Nurse to Patient ratio usually on the med-surg floor? How are the ancillary staff (PCT, Phlebotomists, etc.)? The hospital I currently work at we have a 1:6 ratio on med-surg/telemetry, sometimes up to 1:7 or 1:8 if staffing is low. We have 1-2 nursing aide (mostly just one) that do the usual bed baths, take vital signs, do ekg, answer lights, etc. etc.
  25. I had a phone interview with one of the recruiters few months ago. Wasn't a fun experience at all. I thought the recruiter was rude. I got more nervous and she became more and more rude with me. I forgot her name. They ask you general questions like your experience, which Mount Sinai campus and unit you prefer to work in, etc. etc.
