  1. so with keeping this thread going lets go into the environment and handling of the neonate and things to support development. here is a few questions to answer (which should be interesting to see the different responses based on the experience of nurses here)! 1. what type of handling aids in myelinization by increasing hypothalamic activity? with the increase of hypothalamic activity which hormone is also produced by this type of handling? while at the same time in preterm infants this type of handling suggests that it also increases increased levels of insulin. **hint this should not be used in acutely ill preterm infants and should be confined to preterm growers. 2. in the nicu environment we all know noise is a big issue. can someone list at 3-5 cardiorespiratory changes that occur with loud noise, how the baby will react to the loud noise, an interesting thing i found was that an increase in cerebral blood flow from loud noise causes an increased risk for ________________ ______________ (two words). *we know it disturbs sleep wake cycle so we can leave that out* hopefully these are some good interesting questions (and not too easy). about me: i am currently in my preceptorship during my nursing program and placed in the nicu (which i love and want to be here my whole nursing career)!
  2. A bunch of the hospitals in Las Vegas have this option to view wait times before heading to the hospital. I am pretty sure there is no magic trick to only having a 30 minute wait time for any of these emergency departments. There are a lot of choices in the Las Vegas valley for hospitals and wait times are usually not that long. Another interesting thing to note is that some urgent cares in Las Vegas also have wait times available online along with how many patients are waiting to be seen. The wait times have been listed online for some hospitals since 2009.
  3. Knowledge deficit for the hydration? Not sure if you can go that far without seeing the patient. It might not have been a knowledge related issue for the patient that led to the dehydration. Risk for infection is good. Think about your ABC's! Since the NG tube is there how about Risk for Aspiration?
  4. I agree with most other posts here. Past degrees mean nothing in nursing school. You earn all the respect. You said you are getting straight A's so why worry? Let the instructors do what they want. It seems petty to say that you think an instructor is intimidated by you because you are more educated. In the nursing profession you are not more educated, and she is more well versed. Muttering things under your breath seems like a lack of control that as a "well educated" person you should be able to control and avoid. With your current situation you will always have instructors that you do not like or that do not like you, just keep doing well and move on.
  5. Just make it known to your instructor that you have class after. You might be cutting it close if the clinical is far away as you wont be able to get a bite to eat in-between.
  6. Fill out a fafsa, and contact financial aid. Financial aid should also be at the orientation and explain to you that there is an extra form to fill out stating that you have extra expenses as a nursing student. This will help you get extra.
  7. It was around 136 last semester. So they may anticipate one less clinical instructor (8 students each). To everyone who got in! Congrats! Join the NSNA at the orientation. Your drug test will need to be completed from May 6-8. So what ever you may be doing stop or an alternate here will be happy to take your place. Do exactly what it says on the letter when you go to pick it up. Bring what you need with you to orientation. You have a long time to get all the vaccinations done so do it quick. Find your shoes from a good place. Do not wait to find you scrub top or lab coat as you will need to have the patch sown on before your ACE #3 (Third week in). Amazon has great deals on stethoscopes! Littmanns are great. The Classic II SE was cheap ($60) and I can hear every sound. By a blood pressure cuff to practice manual BP on all of your family! You will complain all of week 3 that you cant hear the sounds lol. You will have a well elderly paper (it is long and in APA format). You will need to find an older person who is not your family to do an interview with about their life and medical history. Start thinking about someone you could do it on. They will ask you to have them sign something and give them a phone number. When you get the box of books it is over whelming. Just breathe and plan ahead and study when you say you will. Learn how to tell family members and friends "No". Explain in a simple way that "Look I may not see you for the rest of this semester, but whatever time I can make for you I will". Seems harsh but if you say "Yes" more often then "No" you will be reapplying. You will have 3 core books with at least 7-10 chapters on each test that include easy chapters to the actual assessment of a whole body system chapter! The tests get harder. Do well on the first one. Get into a study group! The NSNA has one! Last but not least, even though I may have scared you, relax, this is what you all waited for! Congrats!
  8. Did you get a call to be an alternate? If not call the LE office. People will be dropping left and right soon after orientation. Just wait for all the failed drug tests, not showing up to orientation, not completing forms, forgetting to do background checks. Sometimes money can be an issue. 1st semester books were around $890 then you have to include the uniform, and things for clinical like stethoscope, nursing shoes.
  9. Calls should be going out tomorrow or Thursday. Good luck!
  10. For anyone concerned with the math. Just buy the book for the toolbox class at the bookstore. It is about $6.00 and you can read through it. It fully explains the questions so you don't have to pay for the class.
  11. I would direct this to a major section of this website as this is not the thread to do this in. Questions like #3 should be some pretty easy research for someone to do. I would also make some specific questions instead of those. Ask about a specific misconception that you know of. You will get great answers.
  12. Just keep up with the reading! I am currently in the program (Starting 2nd semester). Focus on getting the points for BIOL 224 (after you finish BIOL 189 and 223) for the application for nursing school. Communications is also a very easy class to take to get the points for the admission to nursing school! Make sure to keep a great GPA in the pre-req classes. Focus more on BIOL 189 than the rest this semester!
  13. You pretty much got the idea. At orientation they had different half-sheets of paper on the wall that were all different "options". These options were to prevent students from making a mistake when registering and also to most likely stop students from fighting over a class as soon as registration was opened. You look at as many as you can and then write down (or take a picture with a camera phone) which ones you want. You draw a number when you sign in and get your packet. Then they started with number one and then went up to the amount of students they accepted into the program. The later clinical's were gone first and distance education (online) classes I assume were left. So if you were the last number you were most likely getting a distance education NURS 101 class and an early clinical. When you chose the option they gave you a sheet with the class call numbers day and time so you really don't have to jot down all the information about the classes. NURS 125B (Pharm) was not in any of the options so on the 4th of may everyone was supposed to register for what ever class they wanted to. You registered for the classes in the option you chose in your when registration opened. You are not auto enrolled in the classes like UNLV does for its first semester students. Also part time students were allowed to chose first since they did not distinguish options from full time or part time. Which I think they may have just forgotten to do as they seem flustered when it was mentioned. I wouldn't expect that again next orientation. Good luck with your application!
  14. Don't forget your receipt for the drug screen!
  15. From my packet that I received on Friday it said "Tardiness in excess of 15 minutes will be considered as non attendance. Failure to attend will result in the loss of your position to the next member on the alternate list." So your chances of getting a spot can come at multiple times. Every meeting date on the packet and other circumstantial things such as the drug tests all provide you a chance to take a spot. Good luck!
