Im looking at going to WGU for RN to BSN. I work part time because I have a toddler at home who takes up most of my time ( and of course I want to spend as much time with him). Im planning on spending about 30 hrs a week on studying . 4-5 hrs a day in the middle of the morning 0230-0730 when baby is asleep. From anyone's experience, is this enough time to study and get my BSN within a year?

I just passed my CEN yesterday. I've been an R.N. for a year and work at a Trauma 1 center for an unserved population. I used Sheehy's Manual of Emergency Nursing as my review guide and that was my only book. I also did the practice exams online from ENA. My hospital didn't cover the cost of my exam so it was expensive for me to keep getting a lot of books. I felt like I got exposure to a lot of things at my hospital which helped me with my exam.

I just took the BCEN pre-exam test to see how I would do. I've been an E.R. nurse for exactly 1 year at a Trauma 1 center in an underserved area. I got 78% which I was a little shocked at since I thought I was going to fail. Im going to use Mark Boswells book, Sheehys Emergency Care and CEN ENA review book. How far in advance did you all study for? Im trying to get my exam done in 6 weeks.

lol it sounds like you and i work in the same hospital....ours get so slammed they put us in an area where there is a ratio of 8:1 and you have an lvn to help out. its scary!

ER took me less than a month for everything. I applied the day the position opened up though. If you can handle a fast pace ( can be extremely stressful at times) and want to do trauma, I would say go to ER. I like the rush. The training for ER is only six weeks though, so you should be a fast learner and be able to think during stressful times. You will learn so much though...everyday is something new. This week we are getting trained on the new equiptment for the new ER so by the time any of you get hired, you wont have to worry about learning an old vs. new system as the new one will already be in place.

congrats! im a new grad as well that just recently got hired at harbor adult ER. im happy there :-)... im glad there is hope and new grads are getting hired!

My story isn't only based on luck but on some hard work. I graduated December 2012 and got licenced March 2013 (went on a long vacation). I have zero nursing experience before school and no other previous degrees except for sales. I have an ASN not a BSN.I knew no one in the hospital settings really with no real hook ups, and Im in So. Cal where its freaking tough as nails and highly competitive to get a job (isnt it everywhere though). BUT..... I got hired for my first job in a trauma 2 center after 5 weeks of getting licenced, and just got offered my second oppertunity job at another trauma 1 center which I will starting at shortly. What did I do? I networked my way in to find the right people. If there was an event as the hospital for diabetes or htn or whatever.... I showed up and tried to meet the DM educator or a nurse there or anyone with pull. I did this everyday. I even had the balls to call the CNO (somehow I got passed the secretary) and got them to give me advice over the phone on how to get a job in their hospital in this tough market ( i did it for a referrel and to name drop with CNO's name when I got an interview). I know its not easy and its a hell of a frustrating. But, I worked my butt off "making" connections. I got turned down many times and received the whole " we need experience" etc., but I still perservered and networked my way in to find the right people. Looking for a job was my new job. I hope you find one soon....dont do the paper submissions only. It rarely works. You have to meet people in person. Find out the hospitals you want to work at that are currently hiring and go to their events and mingle your way in if you didnt have any connections like me and build upon that.

I'm still learning my IV skills since I am a new grad. I get about 1/2 of them. Most are difficult sticks. Usually, I tell the patient (I'm very friendly and nice to the family and patient from the beginning even if they are a little difficult with, which sometimes "chills" them out a little more), "I need to give you an IV, I know that it can feel uncomfortable and can be a little painful. I'm going to try here (point to the area Im going to jab), if I can't get it. I will try here ( point to another spot). If I still can't get it, I will get another nurse to try, OK"? So far, I haven't had any problems. I think the patient and family feel better when you have informed them..BUT..I am aware I dont have 30 years experience of dealing with patients.... and I know that the days are coming where I will have the patients that will be pushy and complain about even the first stick that I get in. :):). Just my two cents...

Hi Everyone! Thanks for all your input and advice :). I made a mistake saying its a "per diem" position in my previous posts. It's a part time position. I have decided to take the part-time 2 x a week minimum position at the Trauma 1 center. I spoke to the nurse director about my concerns of shift availability, and she assured me that if im flexible, i can easily get 32-40 hrs or more per week (in addition to the 2 days im already gauranteed). I also verified all the information with some of my classmates and friends who have worked at this hospital for a few years now. They all work 40 hours hired part time with the great pay and they like working at the place. Training is supposed to be very good and with experienced nurses (unlike the trauma 2 where everyone is considered a "veteran" if you have been there a year). Low turnover rate at Trauma 1. high turnover at trauma 2. I dont have crazy bills or debt, so worst case scenario...if for some reason I can only get 2 shifts. I can easily cover all my bills and save a little extra cash (the $ is that good). NM mentioned that I can apply for a FT position once a position opens. I originally wanted to work at the Trauma 1 center but they weren't hiring at the time. Of course, being a new grad I would take what I could get and landed at the Trauma 2. I would like to work "as needed" at the Trauma 2 since they are always short of staff, and there is a bunch of registry all the time when I'm working. I will see how the NM feels about it (proberbly not since im still new and easily replaceable ). The staff and managers at the Trauma 2 are really awesome (which makes the decision a little more difficult), but I will take the second option of Trauma 1 and see where that road leads me. I'm excited that its at the hospital I have wanted to work at from the beginning. :-) ;-). Of course, until the paperwork is signed and the new position is official, Im staying at the current job and getting my experience. Again, thanks everyone for your input! Its a minimum of 2 times a week, but most nurses are working 32-40hours, just without benefits. Pay is really good. I guess i should ask NM when i can be hired full time. Its not per diem, my mistake, its a part time Relief Nurse.

Hi Everyone, I'm a new grad from last year. I was recently offerered a job full time at a trauma 2 center. I'ts graveyard, the staff is nice. Most of the staff at night have been there less than a year ( it has a pretty high turnaround as ppl get their experience and leave because the pay isn't as competitive. My preceptor has only been there 6 months). Last week, I was offered a pier diem job at a trauma 1 center. I The pay is 35% higher than my full time position but not with many benefits, however, the NM and recruiter said that most of the per diem work a 40 hour work. I need to only work a minimum of 2 and pick up as many extra shifts as I feel I need. Scheduling is plenty because they are doubling the size of their trauma center. I'm conflicted because I like where I work right now ( even though its ive only been there a month), but they graveyard is a killer. My first choice of hospital to work at was the trauma 1 center that just hired me pier diem. Its evening shift and the hours are much better (3-11pm). As a new grad, Im grateful to have even been hired anywhere!, but I am feeling conflicted about the decision of Trauma 2 ( full time,graveyard , less pay, a little further away, benefits ) or Trauma 1 ( better scheduling, flexibility to include additional shifts as pently are available, more pay, less benefits, closer, better experiences as its trauma 1, additional training from more experienced RN's)

Thanks for the advice. Im trying to stay positive and see what good I can get out of this :-). At some point id like to pick up an extra shift. Do u thibk i should do three days in a row, then have one off before doing my extra shift?

It took a week or less after applying online. Ended up somewhere else at another hospital though thats closer to me. Keep applying.

Hi Everyone! I just recently landed a job. I graduated in December 2012 and am excited to start working soon. The issue or big transition I'm facing is that I was given then night shift as opposed to my anticipated day shift .So, I'm trying to make the best of the time situation in relation to my social life. I heard people that adjust the best to night shift are the ones that keep their off nights to that schedule as well? Since, my hours would be shifted. I would like to meet/talk to/ get to know other nurses in the Los Angeles area that also work nights? I'd like to expand my social circle and I think it would be great getting to know other nurses going through the same transitions. We can go grab a drink or food when the world is asleep. I'm in my early thirties and would like to meet anyone from all age groups. PM me or message on here if anyone is interested! ;-)

Ok, so I ended up getting the job! I was just being impatient, frustrated and having a tantrump. Keep the faith...I had no connections and have my AA only.

Hi! Im a new grad that was hired for ER nightshift. At what point can I request dayshift? Given the lack of jobs for a new grad, im grateful to have landed a job, even though its night shift. Id just like some feedback at what point (how many months/years etc.) am i considered to have some seniority and able to request a transition to day shift?
