I'm hoping someone on the forum will be able to help me out. I am interested in becoming an MICN but don't currently work for a Base Hospital. I do technically meet the eligibility requirements according to LA County Reference 1010 (confirmed by an LA County EMS Agency staff member) since I am employed full-time in an ER and am also on staff with an LA County-approved Paramedic provider agency. That said, I was told by the EMS Agency that in order to complete the radio internship requirement I would need to find a Base Hospital that would allow me to do those hours in their ER despite not being an employee of the hospital. They said that they don't know of any hospitals in LA County that would be willing to do that. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can arrange the internship hours and where I can take an MICN course? Thanks!

A few days ago, "I have chest pain." We do the whole nine yards: Serial EKGs, labs, chest xray, nitro, morphine, etc. Everything come back negative. The patient is quiet, yet every time he sees me the moaning and clutching of the chest starts again. Finally he says, "They usually give me dilaudid, it's the only thing that works." I ask, "How often do you get this chest pain?" He replies, "Once or twice a month and dilaudid is the only thing that works, do something to help me!" Discuss with the physician, come back to explain that we're admitting him for his chest pain but won't be able to provide dilaudid at this time. Lo and behold, no more clutching the chest and he says, "Well thanks for nothing! I'm just going to leave AMA then!"

I know this is kind of an old thread by now but I wanted to share my experience in the ED the other night. Had a patient brought in by ambulance from a dialysis center for a bleeding AV fistula (forearm placement). There was a gauze pressure dressing in place which had been put on by the dialysis center and the bleeding seemed well controlled (gauze was pretty clean). Our doc went back to take a look and unwrapped the dressing and when she did the patient began hemorrhaging! One of the nurses ran up to me and said that they needed help with an arterial bleed and when I went back with him the patient must have already lost nearly a liter of blood. Direct pressure was being applied but the blood was still pouring and nobody could find a manual BP cuff. We were trying to find something to use to make a tourniquet when our ER tech ran in with his personal BP cuff which he kept in his car. We pumped it up all the way and the bleeding stopped to a trickle, allowing the doc to suture the bleeder. Prior to the bleed the patient's systolic BP was in the 160s, afterward it was in the mid 90s! Patient was stabilized, was admitted and I think received 4 units of blood. Right after that I ordered two CATs on Amazon: one as a gift to the department and the other to keep in my car's jump bag! Hadn't thought about the kerlix + yankour idea, but thanks for sharing. I'm definitely going to practice rigging something up on my next shift and then show the other nurses how to do it in a pinch!

DaddyO: I know! I've searched all over and it doesn't seem like anyone makes a crew-neck scrub top for men. In the meantime I'll just keep wearing undershirts beneath my scrubs (another reason why I didn't become an OR nurse!)

I've recently started wearing IguanaMed scrubs. They are an athletic fit so you might have to go up a size but when you do they should fit ok since they're cut slimmer than the other brands. Lots of compliments on them. I used to wear Dickies and Koi but lately all I buy are the Iguana scrubs. Erick, Yeah, I know what you mean about the fashion + pockets thing. I also have a pair of Dickies which actually look pretty nice (they're a softer material than the usual Dickies I've seen) and have lots of pockets. A few months ago I started buying all my scrubs from Murse World: The Men's Scrubs Store | Murse World. If you go there you can search for the Koi, Med Couture, and Iguana scrubs I was talking about. I've tried several kinds. I'm 5'8", 150 pounds, so pretty close to your build. I've tried Aviators and frankly didn't really like them once I got 'em. The pleating on the front of the pants makes it almost have a parachute type appearance in my mind. Dickies are a standard it seems, but Landau in my experience fits better and seems to be of higher quality. The best ones that I've worn so far (just bought a pair recently) are the IguanaMed ones. They are kind of on the pricey side but I really like the way they fit me and the quality. Only problem is that I found the pockets to be a bit on the small side. I have come to settle on three sets which are my favorite: Koi, Med Couture, and IguanaMed. I bought them all at this online store that specializes in men's scrubs that I found, if you want the link I can post it but I've posted it before in another thread so I'm afraid if I post it again they'll think I'm a spammer.

I know what you mean. It's really hard to fine men's scrubs that fit well! I haven't worn WonderWink but I am about your build and really like how the Dickies Youtility scrubs fit me. I don't know what happened but I guess during the redesign my post was lost? Anyway, I had posted asking if anyone had ever shopped at http://www.murseworld.com for scrubs before but I just wanted to update the forum to say that I decided to try them last week. They are running a 10% off sale right now (not sure when it ends). I received my order yesterday so it looks like they're legit. The prices seem good and they emailed me saying they're adding more products to their catalog soon. I purchased a set of Med Couture men's scrubs which are pretty nice. Anyway, I know it's hard to find scrubs for men sometimes so I thought I'd just let everyone know about my experience.

I too just got accepted to a nursing program for Spring 2011! I was called last week saying I was an alternate and yesterday morning I received another phone call saying that I was now officially accepted into the program to start Feb 7, 2011 at Los Angeles City College (LACC). I have a couple months to mentally prepare (and brush up a little bit on my A&P which I took 4 1/2 years ago). I wonder how many other men will be in the class with me. One thing that does bug me is whenever the nurse is a man people preface by saying "male" nurse. You don't have people saying "female doctor". How come when the news reports on something it's, "and their male nurse". What would happen if they said, "and their Hispanic nurse" or "their Jewish nurse"? Psht!

I applied to the RN/BSN program as a transfer student. Still haven't received any word though. I called the nursing department because CSULA wants me to pay a $100 non-refundable deposit by May 1 but I really don't want to shell out that money if I'm not going to get accepted to the program. The woman I spoke with at the nursing office said she expected the notifications to go out before May 1 so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck!

I was told this morning that CSULB never has and never will accept Chemistry 10 from Santa Monica College despite the course description from what I took it matching the CHEM 140 course description. According to Monalisa (the Admissions Director), in her five years with CSULB they have never felt SMC's syallbus was adequate for their requirements. After we had that discussion she also went on to tell me that it doesn't really matter since they had so many applicants this year that the cut score was 8.9/10 which I was below and therefore had no chance of acceptance in the first place. Something tells me that CSULA won't treat me any better so I guess I'm going to be stuck doing an ADN program (which will make for a total of three Associates degrees when I'm done) and THEN start the BSN/MSN path. C'est la vie. Good luck to everyone else. I was told by the Department of Nursing at CSULB that they completed all their interviews last week and have sent out all of the denial letters. They have not yet sent out acceptance letters.

They didn't even give me an interview because my application was considered incomplete. They simply invited me to fix the deficiency and then reapply for the next term. I've been calling all morning to speak to the Admissions Coordinator who doesn't seem to be at her desk (despite my being told she would be available after 10 am). Frustrated doesn't even begin to describe how I feel at the moment.
