  1. Congrats to you guys. Welcome to the Pineapple
  2. Ab, The question about your class in which you received a W is probably best answered by an advisor. As far as the Micro lab, you do need it to graduate, however it is NOT factored into your GPA for admission. Hope this helps!
  3. You're looking for the Potter Perry 7th edition Fundamentals book? Have another look, there are plenty of listings for less than 10 bucks!
  4. Eracne, That message goes out when there is something that comes up on the background check that needs further clarification; don't worry about it too much, if you know that you don't have anything to hide, everything will come out in the wash and you'll be fine. The same thing happened to me because there's a guy with my same name and birthdate that got arrested a bunch of times, so of course it always comes up on any background check I do lol. Just jump on it quick, the sooner the better! JessicaGZ, Congrats on being close to applying. There has always been a nasty rumor going around about this, something which I worried about myself for awhile. However, I ASSURE you: There is NO waiting list for MDC!! All applications are on a semester-by-semester basis.
  5. I went over in person. Apparently my e-mail address was recorded with an @mdc.edu on the end instead of a @mymdc.net . I went over to see an advisor, the problem was corrected, and I got my e-mail within a couple of hours. Again, I'm not saying that would be the case for everyone, but it doesn't hurt to at least check. Perhaps you'll be able to discuss your status with the advisor. I hope it all works out for the best!
  6. Hey Studybudy, You lose nothing by calling or going to ask about your status. When I was supposed to receive my acceptance e-mail, I waited 3 days, and it turned out they had my e-mail address down wrong. I don't want to give you false hope and say that this is the case, but again it never hurts. Give it a shot!
  7. Congrats to everyone that got in!!! Again, to those still waiting...hope is not lost. Don't count yourself out yet. @Merlina...be VERY happy you're getting new uniforms. The ones we have now are pretty rough. As far as books, hit up Amazon and Half.com for them. I have the list from Spring semester orientation, I don't know what changes they've made but if anyone would like to have it, PM me and I'll e-mail a copy of it to you. Congrats again! Get your stuff done!
  8. Cane, Well the program I'm actually in is the Baptist Scholars Program, so I while I was originally assigned there I don't attend Homestead Campus. However, from the folks who do go there, I've heard good things. I have been there a couple of times and it seems pretty nice and pretty modern. The nursing lab is supposed to be great.
  9. Hey folks, I know it can be worrisome thinking about how much you have to get done in a short amount of time after acceptance, but you should have at least 3 weeks to get everything done, depending on which program you're accepted to. The only thing you should jump on ASAP is the CPR certification, because the closer it gets to orientation the more they'll fill up. Make sure you take the CPR-BLS for Healthcare Providers one. The MDC Medical campus offers a whole bunch, and that way you know it will be accepted. When I was accepted, we got our e-mails on October 21. You will have approximately 1 to 2 weeks to accept your spot and pay a $100 deposit for the program (which will be deducted from the cost of your tuition). The rest of the stuff is due by orientation. The generic program students going to medical campus had orientation on November 17, so they had a little over three weeks; my orientation for generic Homestead was on November 29, so I had about 5 weeks to do everything. Either way, as long as you're looking at the same time frames for your acceptance-to-orientation period, if you start making your appointments the day you get your acceptance, you'll be fine. I would probably wait to do your physical, vaccinations, drug screen and background check until after getting your acceptance because there are specific forms that MDC will send you that you'll need to have completed. If any of you are close to Broward County, I can recommend this place: http://www.doctors365.com . Go to the student services section of their site, and you'll see their prices for what you'll need (Physical, PPD, Varicella and MMR titers, drug screen); they're pretty much the best I found. You don't need an appointment, and they're an all-around great facility. Soooo, as with pretty much everything nursing school-related, don't procrastinate and everything should be fine!
  10. MJL, lemme see what I can do. I'll PM you!
  11. Sorry folks! Didn't mean to take so long to get back to you all...summer semester ain't no joke! Canelaw, I don't think there's anything wrong with verifying that all of your paperwork is in correctly. I don't know how much room you would have to fix an error if in fact your eligibility is in question, but if it was a simple fix it would definitely be better to patch it up now than when acceptance letters go out. More likely than not, everything's fine! MJL, ballpark cost is around $1400 give or take in tuition, and $150 in uniform, supplies and shoes. As far as books, I spent about $450 up front buying my books for both the first and second semester. I would recommend buying your med-surge books now because you can use them to do the pathophysiology for your care plans (don't worry about understanding that right now, it'll all be explained). That $450 was for books I bought entirely off of Amazon and other students; I haven't bought anything at the MDC bookstore so far. Mary, the schedule will change from semester to semester. A lot of it will revolve around when the hospitals can take students for clinicals, and what rooms and professors are available at specific times, etc. Last semester I was lucky to have Friday off, this semester I'm doing something every day of the week. Additionally, each semester I had a class that changed time and day, so my ability to plan ahead was pretty much scrapped. I wish I had something better to share than that, but it will really be a gametime decision! Any other questions please feel free to throw them up here! Only 5 weeks now guys, enjoy your free time and do things you enjoy!!!
  12. Hey everyone, congrats on your application process! I know that waiting is torture, I've been there...TWICE (got in for Fall, couldn't accept and re-applied for Spring). Both times, the wait was approximately 6 weeks. I knew this and still checked my e-mail several times a day after I applied LOL, but it doesn't look like that will be changing anytime soon. They not only upload all the application information by hand into their systems, but I believe they go through the process of re-checking each application to verify that all pre-requisites have been completed. My guess is that they don't exactly have a team of 20 people working on this, so it takes awhile for whoever is working on it to get it done, in addition to whatever their normal job duties are. Also, advisors usually don't give out specific information about cutoff scores because it can be a rapidly moving number. Often the cutoff score between the last person on the list and the first reject can be just 1/10th of a point, and a large influx of very high/low scores on the last day apps are accepted can bump up/down where the cutoff line had been previously. They won't know until the acceptance lists are actually generated where the cutoff score falls, and even then it will go down because of people (like me for Fall) who turn their spots down. They don't need a bunch of panicked people showing up fresh off their rejection e-mails saying "But you said I would probably get in!" Honestly, I can't say I blame them. So take a nice deep breath and I promise, the moment of truth will get here. Much success to you all! :w00t:
  13. I'm doing my ADN right now through MDC also, so I can't speak to which school is best for a BSN from personal experience. However, you've got a good head on your shoulders to start your additional pre-reqs! Some that I know are common to multiple schools are Nutrition, Statistics and Psychology, so as you gather additional information on BSN programs, definitely look into knocking those out as you await your entrance into the ADN program. I wish you lots of success!
  14. Hey Yisy, things are good here! So far, not dead yet :w00t:
  15. Natalia, my experience might differ a bit from the type of experience you'd have as a transfer student, so my recommendation would be to message a user on here named On Eagles Wings . She's very helpful and is currently in her second semester at MDC, whereas I'm in my first. Without going into too much detail, do you care to share some of the difficulties you had at BCC? Mary, in my opinion, what you have should be good enough. I know plenty of people who have a lower total score than you, and are in MDC nursing school right now. I am just always the type to think about trying to get an edge, so if the option for a second test is available to you, and you don't mind paying another $50 and sitting through it, you might come out of it with another couple of points. Who knows?
  16. Sure thing! MJL, I understand about the advisors. Contrary to what you'll hear from many people, I think the advisors are great over there. Unfortunately, they a lot of students have expectations of them that they just can't fulfill, so I tried not to bother them a whole lot hehe. Mary, if you are going to take the TEAS again, make sure you get a date that you want. As the deadline approaches, the dates will start disappearing as everyone rushes to get the test done on time. From what I remember they usually list dates about a month in advance. Happy studying!
  17. Hey folks, glad to hear you're applying. I'm in my first semester in the Generic Fulltime program at MDC now. Looking at your scores, I would say you're in a good position to be accepted for both programs, however the cutoff always changes from semester to semester. Don't torture yourself chasing after the advisors and asking them where the cutoff score is...they don't always know, and you'll get a bunch of different answers. If you can take the TEAS again, I would do so; there's nothing wrong with taking a second opportunity to improve your scores. That being said, you both did well! Some advice from experience: Start your applications now. There is no worse feeling than rushing to turn in your application with the clock ticking on the last day it's due. You'll need to swing by the advisement office to pick up an application, and from there you can start getting your documents around. Please let me know if you have any more questions :0)
  18. The Baptist Scholars Program IS still in existence, as of Spring 2012. It's offered for MDC students starting the ADN fulltime generic program (no accelerated, no part-time, no transitional) in the Spring Semester only, not fall. Baptist also offers the program to Barry and Nova BSN students. Baptist will decide how many to take based on need. Right now there are 29 in the MDC program. No one can say what their plans are for 2013, but there's no reason to expect that the Baptist Scholarships won't be available for the coming spring as well. Hope this helps!
  19. Ximena did make quite a few exaggerated generalizations, and while Miami is the worst job market in the country, and isn't for everyone, your experience will largely be what you make of it.
  20. ADN is the Associate Degree in Nursing, a 2 year degree; BSN is the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a 4 year degree. Sitting for the NCLEX, the exam that certifies you as an RN, only requires you to have an ADN. Many nurses pursue this degree (because it's quicker and cheaper), become an RN, and then start working and possibly return to school later to complete the Bachelor's Degree. Getting a BSN also qualifies you to sit for the NCLEX and become an RN, since it's a higher level degree. Many hospitals are moving towards "Magnet" status, and one of the ways to achieve that status is to have a certain percentage or all nurses in the facility that have the BSN, or are "BSN prepared" as it is often written. ADN seems to focus more on core clinical skills, and the BSN goes beyond that, deeper into theory of nursing and preparation for management positions and Master's degrees. Just a few tidbits based on my research, I'm just about to start my ADN at this point, so I haven't experienced any of this yet, and I'm sure someone who did the ADN to BSN could share more. Hope this helps!
  21. I'd say the courses are fairly challenging; you'll need to put time and effort into not only getting an A, but making sure you internalize the knowledge, because some of it will pop up later in your nursing education and career. I took a few classes at north campus and I have only good things to say about the experiences I had there. Thanks for your service, and I wish you success!
  22. Agreed, it's very disappointing to be rejected from the program, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us, and now isn't the time to get discouraged. We will all go on to become great nurses, it's just not going to be at Baptist right now. There is a plan out there for all of us! To those who got into the Scholars Program, congratulations!!! You have obviously earned it. Well done!
  23. Awesome, way to go Jael!!!
  24. I haven't had an issue, but I know a lot of people at my orientation were having issues with the background check, and they said there was a backlog. I know that all documentation is supposed to be submitted/cleared by Monday 12/5, but I suppose they'll be making allowances since the holdup is on their side. As far as the lady working the front desk, she seemed pretty overwhelmed when I was there, but I managed to make her laugh. I would imagine it's really tough to get upset calls from 100+ people about the same thing In any case, I wouldn't worry too much, you should be fine!
