Pull back on the NG tube?
Currently learning to troubleshoot NG tubes. The procedure document my clinicals instructor gave me says "if the exit mark on the NGT is no longer visible, pull back the NGT and resecure to the patient's face/nose". I'm a bit confused about what this means. Pull the NGT tube where? Or back to what? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

Travel RNs working only one assignment for an agency?
I'm currently planning a relocation to a new city, and am considering trying to get a travel contract to start out with. That way I figure I'll have time to "shop around" and learn about the various hospitals and neighborhoods before making any permanent decisions! My question is, how do travel agencies feel about this type of travel nurse? Are they okay with nurses working only one assignment, or would they prefer someone who'll be with the agency for the long-haul? Would a recruiter be reluctant to work with me? Thanks in advance?

Looking for new job while already employed: how to handle references?
Hi everyone, I'm almost one year into my first RN position. While I love my job (most days anyway!), I moved to the other side of the country to work here and I'm honestly not really loving this city. So, I'm looking for a new job closer to friends and family. My question is, how should I handle professional references on employment applications? Since this is my first and only nursing position, I feel like my references should come from managers and colleagues at my current position. BUT I don't really want to tell anyone that I'm thinking about leaving until I actually have an offer or at least an interview. Thoughts? What do you guys think I should do? Thanks!

Anyone successfully move back to Cali w/ one year of experience?
Hi everyone, As you all know, the job market in California is terrible for new grads! After trying unsuccessfully to land a job after graduation, I finally decided to take a position at a hospital here on the East Coast. I absolutely love my job, and I'm learning so much, but to be honest I'm really not loving living here. I miss the sunshine, I miss the food, and most of all I miss my friends! My goal now is to finish out the year here and move to L.A. I have a BSN plus a previous master's, and the hospital where I work now is very well-respected--so my credentials are good. But I'm just hoping that that will be enough to open up some doors for me back west! I'm wondering if any former new grads were able to land a job back home after a year away? And if so, how you did it, when you started applying, etc. I would be grateful for any advice. I think that hearing some success stories from people who were in my position would really help lift my spirits on this cold and rainy day!

UCLA New Grad RN Program-Winter 2012
Quick question: does anyone's status say "wait-listed"? Just checked and that's what mine says, but I was never even contacted for an interview so I just wonder what that means...

How long can it take to hear back from an employer?
So you guys think its ok to follow up? I have been wondering about this, b/c it seems like most of the hospitals I've applied to specifically ask you NOT to call or follow-up!

California's 2011 New Grad Program
Ok you guys, kind of bad news: Just called Mission Hospital in the OC. They were on my list of residency programs that I was really interested in. Unfortunately, the woman I spoke with said that they had so many internal candidates for the program that they won't be posting it for the public. I'm a little bummed, but just thought I'd share in case some of you were also waiting for the program to open. Oh well...we will just have to think positive and pursue every other opportunity!

UCLA New Grad RN Program-Winter 2012
Update for any of you guys who applied to psych: I called hr, and the lady I spoke to was super nice. She said that they are still making calls for the psych unit, and that she thinks the psych interviews will be mostly on the 29th (wasn't 100% sure about the interview date though)! Also, she said that if we haven't heard anything by December, that's when we should assume that we're not in the running. I feel better since I called, and just thought I'd share. So don't give up hope yet! My plan is to pursue as many other opportunities as possible, but remain optimistic for UCLA b/c Resnick is an amazing hospital and definitely my dream job! Best of luck to everyone interviewing today! I'm sure that you will all do great!

Know of any new grad friendly psych jobs? Anywhere in the country?
I'm going to be graduating soon, and as we all know this is a tough time for new nurses. Was just wondering if any you happened to work at or otherwise know of any psych hospitals that will consider new nurses? I'm willing to move almost anywhere, but I have my heart set on mental health. Would be eternally grateful for your help!

UCLA New Grad RN Program-Winter 2012
Hi PatientRN! I think I saw that you received a call in another post...I guess my thought process was just that since you listed m/s as your first maybe they called you with the m/s group and haven't called the psych first choice group yet. Or maybe I'm just grasping at straws here! Did they offer you a choice of both units and you opted to interview with psych? Or did they call you specifically for psych? It's just frustrating because not to pat myself on the back, but I think that I'm a really qualified candidate. As I'm sure the rest of you are too! I guess I just can't imagine what they're looking for in a candidate. At any rate, best of luck to all of you guys in your interviews!

Oh seriously? That sucks that they were rude to you! Were they able to tell you anything, like if they started calling for psych yet? If you don't mind sharing I'd love to hear it.

UCLA New Grad RN Program-Winter 2012
SeptemberRn and WishMeLuck, so you guys applied to psych? I also applied to that unit, but still no phone call. Did anyone else who listed psych as their first choice get a call? It really seems to me like they just haven't actually started calling people who listed psych as their first, so I don't think that we should give up hope yet!!! At any rate, I am tired of waiting, its starting to bum me out! I am considering calling them tomorrow to see if they can give me any information, but I also don't want to annoy them since the job announcement specified no calls. Can't decide!
