  3. I usually shop at allheart.com. They have wonderful and fashinonable scrubs at a reasonable price. The other shop I like is in the bronx. On the 6th train get off at peleham bay.
  4. I believe that this is great. NICU is a challenging but rewarding unit you can work for. The more help and support you recieve the better nurse you will be. Dont look at is orientation for six months see it more as the hospital investing time and money to help you be the best you can be. Best of luck to you!

thanks. Does anyone else have feedback for the following questions How is the unit orientation? Did you feel prepared and confident to work as a nicu nurse after? Can you describe your orientation process? What is the unit culture? Do you feel supported as a nurse? TIA

  12. has anyone ever taken the bmcc course? and how would you rate it?!
  13. Hello Guiltysins! I am currently working on a mother baby unit in the nyc area. I do like where I work. I am transfer from nicu. My expirence in the nicu led me to seek employment else where in the hospital. I feel this time around, I felt that my orientation was much better as far as teaching and welcoming of a new staff member/new grad. The census on my unit varies, If its a high acutity nights you can have up to six patients with 6 babies. On the lower acuity nights u can have a min of 3 moms. With mother -baby it varies with the babies, some babies can be in nicu which makes it uneven as far as your mother baby ratio. My fellow nurses for the most part are very willing to help you when you ask for help. As always there always ur few who can be diffcult but when it comes to pt care and safety I feel supported. My hospital does encourage room in. we do explain to pts about the need for assesment and weighing of the baby since its hospital policy and can not be broken. Overall I have not seen a big issue with room in overnight. we dont have cross training to l and d. but a nurse from l and d can float to a mother baby. Mother baby nurses float to other mother baby units or womens med surg. No anteparturm since we are not training on fetal heart monitoring. I hope this explains all of your questions. all the best
  14. Hello! im curious to know wat made you a "stale new grad"?
  15. Hello, From my expirence we usually ask how the child is doing as you stated. Majority of the calls are based on any follow up the child had such as medications or breast feeding if the mom choose this. Parents are given a discharge packet which has phone numbers in case they should have questions. We encourage parents to share their expirences with us. hth

thank you all for the inspiring messages. I do believe that I did all of those things of being helpful to others. my problem began when I had to transition to nights. My preceptor attitude was very nasty at times. She often would ask me a question and then when my answer was not along her answer she became upset and rude. My manager was helpful at times but she basically told me in a nut shell that I need to learn to work with people who have different personalities. I am trying to be placed on a mother baby unit to gain experience as well. I'm still striving to be a nicu nurse. My first job was def a learning experience for me. Once again, I thank you all for your kind words.

  21. As SondheimGeek stated I have done that as well. Also if the baby has a peripheral IV then I give my antibiotics through that as well.

Hello Everyone, I'm a recent new grad may 2009, passed boards in August. I started my first job in the nicu in October. My first nicu job didnt go very well. Although I was disappointed and hurt. I realized that this is a time for growing. My ultimate goal is to be a neonatal practioner or clinical coordinator . My expirence was not a great learning expirence based on the enviorment and precpeptors who were not so welcoming. I tried my best to make things work out but I relized that it was best not to stay in that kind of enviorment. I was working at a great teaching hospital in the nyc areabut the staff and support was not there. I'm under a work commitment so I'm being transfered to another unit preferably pediatrics or a mother baby unit. Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did you regain your confidence? and what was like starting over in another unit. Any input would be fantastic.
  23. Hi, I found the core curriculum for neonatal intensive care unit to be useful when I was on orientation. Its a very good reference and easy to read. I have the fourth edition. hope that helps!
