  1. Hi all, I'm also looking into Alaska travel as an option. I know its cold there but its also beautiful! Any information regarding the Alaska experience is appreciated. Thanks
  2. Hi all, I'm considering a travel nurse position and I need to know how close to the hospitals can I find housing? I don't want to bring my car or rent a car. Is this possible? anybody familiar with any of the areas? thanks so much!
  3. Hi Ned and Anthony, The problem is you cannot be placed in a hospital assignment after being out of it for 2 yrs. I have talked to one recruiter so far that I really like that is going to try and place me in a smaller hospital first. I like hospice but I feel limited too. I haven't spoken to anyone at Aya as yet. Thanks for the input. k
  4. Hi, I would love some advise how to get back to travel after the last 2 yrs. I have years of med/surg and tele experience but over the last two years I have worked hospice. It has been a good experience but now I can't seem to get back into the hospital to travel! I really don't want to travel for hospice. Thanks ahead of time!!
  5. Hi I can see your plight but you are trying to make progress. Give yourself credit for that. The economy is bad and that makes the job market that much tighter. I'm 56 myself and I guess I never thought of my self as "older" until I started having knee problems last year. I have worked in hospitals for years. Now I work for Hospice and this is much less demanding physically and a larger organization may need your degree. If you have your heart set on a hospital then you just have to keep pounding on the door and hopefully someone will let you in. There is a prejudice about nursing homes, LTACS and HHC in the hospital setting. Unfortunately thats the way it is. Maybe you could do nights again and then wait for a job to transfer into that will value your education? I'm considering going back to nights for a while myself even though I said "never again" Good Luck, Kraze
  6. I can feel your pain. I'm an RN with 20 plus years experience and currently in California. I'm from Ohio and want to return home to be with family but guess what?? No response to applications. None. I have spoke to travel companies that I have worked for in the past. The problem for me is I worry that the travel assignments might dry up after one or two assignments and then I'm up the creek without a paddle. I have a great paying job now soooo what to do? Good Luck to you!:)
  7. One more thing... I just wanted to add this. I have spoken to nurses that have gotten jobs by going into hospitals through local registry. The difference here is there is no period of time between working through registry and being directly hired by a hospital that you have to wait. If you start working registry in a hospital and the staff likes you that might be a way to get a FT position. Just FYI :)
  8. Hello, Just thought I would add my two cents. I came to the bay area as a travel RN two years ago. Northern California is a great place in many ways but travel nurses make less than staff nurses here. Where I come from local agency and travel RN's make more money because we don't get benefits. Here staff is supreme. I have been on staff here for the last two years and make more money than I ever could have before I moved here. The problem is landing a FT job in this economy. Things could ease up in the future and you may be able to find one.I have talked to nurses that come from the southern part of the country and they still do better flying in and out than staying in their home states. You'll have to run the numbers. Also, housing here is extremely expensive. If you can arrange a roomie you'll be better off. Don't forget to factor in being away from home. It really wears on you. Good Luck!
  9. Hi, Are hospitals hiring in Columbus now? I'm originally from Ohio but living in CA. Thinking of returning home. From the posts on this site many hospitals have low census and nurses are not finding jobs. I work Tele. Which hosp. is best/best pay. Thanks!
  10. I am an RN and one of my close friends just completed a training program with Regents/Excelcior to bridge from LPN to RN. She has paid a lot of money for the clinicals and from what details she has told me it is a sham. She did not pass her clinicals and of course I asked what exactly happened. After hearing the details I felt like they were all set up to fail. She also said almost everyone fails and of course they invite you to return after you pay another bucket of money to them. Great money making deal. So many LPN's are trying to get ahead and in this economy I think it is a SHAME that this company is getting away with this. How many nurses now in this time in our country are supporting their own family as well as helping extended family and probably even friends that are out of work. Of course we want and need properly trained nurses but no school that I have attended or ANY of my RN friends have had similar experiences such as this. I personally think this needs to be looked at more closely and reported to the proper authorities. Please send a reply if you have had a similar experience. Thank you, Beth:angryfire
  11. I have not received a list of agencies using independent contractors. I think the climate over the country is not open to this at the moment. It is difficult to get a FT position for many nurses. If I find any information I will post it. Krazenurse
  12. Is there a hiring freeze in the Dayton/Cincinnati area? Any hospitals in the area doing any hiring? Anyone know the rate of pay in those areas? I'm moving back to Ohio from out of state. Thanks for the info!:typing
  13. I would love a list if it is not too late. Thanks, krazenurse
  14. Pumpkin, I moved from the Dayton,Ohio area to northern California for work. I have been here since Jan.2008. I work in Berkeley and live in Concord. I haven't lived in the northern Ohio area but I could give you the benefit of my view since I have been in both places. I have been an RN for over 20 years and went to school in Springfield,Ohio. PM me. Generally speaking, there is good and bad to any situation you may consider. You just have to look at what will work for your individual situation.
  15. So disappointed, I have a daughter that is 33yrs old and she also takes classes online. I had major misgivings about a total online experience. It is relatively new as I attended a traditional school for my LPN and then my RN over 20 yrs ago. My advice is to listen to your mother BUT check it all out. She may be right and she may be wrong. I feel she has your best interest at heart but the world is changing. She may not be ready for it. I'm on this site because I have thought about taking a few online classes and I wanted to see what some real people thought about it. Everyone has an opinion. check things out for yourself, gather as much info as you can before you make a decision. Good Luck, Mother and grandmother in Ohio:idea:
