Consents
How does your unit handle consents? What where the stickiest situations you encountered verifying a consent? Can someone on a 5150 sign at your hospital? Foreign languages? Patients on pain medication? What is an RN's legal obligation with regards to consent?

Should I Take a Different Path to Become a Nurse?
Hi, I think you should persue the ADN. Most likely your science prerequisites will expire prior to the BSN (while humanities last forever). Most BSNs have a 3-5 yr recency requirement for sciences. You may also discover a specialty while completing your ADN that you love such as hospital admin, PR, Cultural Anthro etc. Good luck!

Personal info was shared -HIPPA violation?
Thank you for the input, I am pleasantly surprised everyone has such strong convictions. I will follow up as suggested with the compliance officer. Great to hear your opinions.

Personal info was shared -HIPPA violation?
My father was in the hospital for a surgical procedure. After he was discharged and home, he got a call from a "care-giver" who stated she got his information from the hospital. He is open to having a caregiver and asked her to come interview. She came to the house and while being interviewed revealed one of the RNs had given her my Dad's number as a possible employment lead, the woman is not affiliated with the hospital officially and is here on a "visitors visa", obviously unlicensed. Following the interview the caretaker emailed the RNs name as a reference. My father's friend, who did the interview and has experience in health care contacted the hospital complaining of HIPPA violations. She has everyone in a frenzy and now passed the "case" to me as it is more than she can handle. Yikes! I feel terrible for the fuss but how stupid of the nurse. What should I do? My instinct is to just let it blow over, no actual harm came of the leak. Thanks for the input.

Teaching to NCLEX NOT teaching nursing
There is some logic behind the madness of "teaching to the NCLEX", the questions really make you think like a nurse. I'm sure you've heard "critical thinking" from all your instructors, the NCLEX questions require it and by answering and analyzing them your thinking patterns change.

Question about the amount of studying you do
Hi, I have great retention but to get through all our reading and paperwork I study about 20hrs a week, 8hrs on Sat and 8 hrs on Sun plus 4 throughout the week.

Is Compton College safe?
Hi, I am in the the RN program at EL Camino in Torrance. We have had a few lectures from the Compton instructors who came to our class to sub. and they were EXCELLENT, I had heard all the negative hype but it was wrong. This has been my experience with the nursing program in general, fear, fear, fear. Nursing is hard and not everyone will make it through, instructors are tough but that doesn't mean their bad. The director of the Compton program is a neat lady with lots of degrees and a dedication to both nursing and bringing up AA women. In any program you're going to get negative experiences but I wouldn't generalize.

What do you use to carry your books around?
I use a big rolling bag, plus a smaller over the shoulder bag. I try and throw my txt in the little bag and take it with me whenever I get in the car just in-case I get stuck somewhere I can catch up on my reading. Otherwise I keep my binder and other books in the rolling backpack so that I can go to the library after class. I also keep a shoebox in the trunk of my car to hold my clinical supplies (badge, stethascope, germy pens, penlight, etc). Finally, I keep a second box for my clincal shoes, that way I don't have to contaminate the car or house with them. Good luck!

El Camino College Fall of 2010
Congrats on your acceptance it's great to finally get to start after taking all the pre-reqs. If you have time to take 48 dosing calculations I would recommend it for a couple reasons. First, of all there is a mandatory math test given twice each semester and if you miss more than two questions your stopped out of the program. Therefore if you don't love math or feel really confident in your math abilities take the class. Second, the class will introduce you to the department and staff which will help once you start full time. You should also try and take pharm, and human growth and development if your stuck on a waitlist I've heard it makes the semester way easier.
