People in healthcare should speak Spanish, she said
i live in south texas where the majority of the population is hispanic. i work where spanish is spoken predominantly and my coworkers are more comfortable speaking spanish than english. i have picked up more spanish in the last few years than i ever did in school. most of my coworkers don't know that i know spanish as well as i do. i do agree with most that english should be learned when someone immigrates here. now i have found out that a lot of people who do speak spanish do know and understand english very well and just don't want to speak it. i have seen that sense of entitlement that most of you have talked about here and it does nothing but irritate me to no end. that's why i have absolutely no problem speaking to someone in english who speaks spanish back to me.

reconsidering a nursing career
Thanks everyone for the answers and support. It was excatly what I was looking for. I'm looking for a career that is more fulilling than being a desk jockey for the rest of my life. My job now can be crazy but I have learned several skills including, lol, how to bite my tongue. It seems like everyday my brain is slowly being sucked out of my head by ******* (insert your own words) people who can't think for themselves on a regular basis.

reconsidering a nursing career
I know every job has it's problems and issues, but it seems like everyone goes to work walking on eggshells. I thought that there was some degree of professionalism in nursing. There has to be enough pressure to just going to work and care for people in the most awful time in their lives without having to worry if you say something wrong or don't impress the right person you can lose your job.

reconsidering a nursing career
I've been scavenging this site for more than 3 months now since I've decided to become a nurse. I'm 2 classes away from applying to a program. Now I'm really reconsidering it. I have read time and time again about problems w/co-workers, black-balling, back stabbing, getting suspended or fired for basically no reason, problems w/management, and nurses who really don't care what they do. There hasn't been a lot of posts highlighting the good side of nursing. I know that no job is perfect, but is this really the norm? Honestly my job now is full of all these problems and then some, and I've had enough of it. I used to enjoy going to work, but now it's full of people who will stab you in the back and then walk all over you to get to the top. If working in nursing is going to be the same way what's the use of spending the next 2+ years working my a-- off to be in the same position I'm in now...

I'm not tech savvy...help me minimize the pain of books/backpack weight! :)
I had a tmoblie dash which is a windows based smart phone. it had windows office mobile. which was pretty cool because i could take pictures in A&P make a powerpoint slide show and put the file on my phone instant flash cards! I typed notes in windows word and was able to look at them on my phone. I would at least look at a windows based smart phone from htc. I don't know how compatible windows based smart phone are with downloadable books and nursing software but most software will tell you which operating systems it's compatible with. I know that blackberry's and plam treo are popular too but i couldn't stand to use either one. Make sure that if you spend the money on a good phone make sure that it can take a memory card. That way you can expand the memory of your phone and keep everything in one place.

Scared to move for job..anyone done it?
One word of caution he may resent you for having the better job. I know my husband does. We've been together for 10 years and it hasn't gotten easier. Just make sure that you can stand on your own 2 feet incase your boyfriend decides to split.

Nursing Job Outlook
I've seen thread after thread about how new nurses can't find jobs right now. Since I'm "planning" getting into a nursing program next year I was curious. Does anyone see a turnaround in the job market within the next 3-5 years?

How to deal with slack students
Boy I hope I get preceptors like you guys. From what I've read here it's amazing that anyone has time to text, email, much less go to the restroom during the day.

How to get through this?
oh my I do feel for you. I know that helpless feeling that you are feeling right now. I sat one year ago last month and helplessly watched Hurricane Ike plow a path of destruction that left my grandparents and aunt houses in shambles. Then I spent 2 weeks in the aftermath and destruction helping them to recover what was left. I know that I am not the same person I was before I left to help out. All you can do is take it one minute, one hour, one day at a time. Honestly there's nothing you can do but be there for your mom, listen to her, and let her talk it out. No amount of words can make it any better right now not with all the death and destruction that is going on. If you can get there don't let everything that's happened get to you. You need to be the strong one. Your mom is probably hanging on by a thread. I know that my grandparents were. There is NOTHING like seeing 50 years of your life piled on the side of the road waiting for someone to haul it away to the dump. It's a nervous breakdown waiting to happen. Reality is that you need to keep your strength and your health up so that when you can go you will be able to help out as much as possible. Remember just to put one foot in front of the other and things will get down.

Contractor CRNAs get screwed when new contract holder takes over
I worked for a DOD contractor before I became a DOD civilian. It's really horrible that they do that but it's the chance that you take when you work for a contractor. Be lucky that they offered to keep the employees who were working on the contract. I know penalty of people who recently lost their job at the location I work at because of a contract switch. I know the pay cut sucks, but unfortunately it's the way of government contracting. I know at one contract renewal one group of people had thier pay cut by $5 an hour. From what I've seen contractors sometimes keep close to what the pay scale in the area is.

How do you stay awake during the night shift?
I have to say the same thing. Make your sleep top priority. For me the first 2 weeks were very hard. I bought a black flat sheet to block the light. I drink coffee nearly every night especially after my lunch. Everyone I know has lol.. a standing death threat if they call me while I'm sleeping during the day.

afraid of needles
To put it bluntly I'm really extremely afraid of needles. I've practiced a few times at school on practice arms, but every time I was so scared my hands shook. Does nursing school take are of this? Does practice really make perfect or I'm just kidding myself into thinking that I can over come this phobia? Does anyone have any tips to over come this fear? ANY and ALL advice is welcome!!:redbeathe:heartbeat:redbeathe I've been reading this site for a few weeks and can't get enough of it. Almost every post seems to have useful information in it. Thanks for helping me decide to go to nursing school after all....:loveya:

questions for DOD civilian nurses
I am currently a DOD civilian. With military conflicts ending around the world, I need to have a back up plan. There has been some talk of down sizing at the base where I work. It took me a long time to get this job and I don't want to leave civil service unless I really have to. I have always had an interest in nursing and really can't see myself at desk job (which is the next progression in my current career) If I can get into nursing school now, I am in a really good position to finish rather quickly. I have a few questions for anyone who is a DOD civilian working at a military hospital, or VA hospital. 1. Is the culture the same as a civilian hospital? Is it better or worse? 2. What's your schedule like? 3. Is it hard for a new grad to get in or transfer from another branch? 4. What's the pay like? 5. Do you get to go overseas? Thanks to everyone who answers

Night Shift Blues
i love my night shift job, but i don't work in nursing. what saved me was sticking to a strict sleep schedule. i've worked in the same job for 5 years now, 2 years on days (0600-1430) and now on nights for 3 (2200-0630). i discovered very quickly working days that i am not a morning person. since i started working nights i've discovered that i actually function better, although weekends are a struggle for me partly because of my husband. i have more time to do things during the day than i ever had working the day shift. i have seen many people come and go on this shift because they can't seem to get a schedule down. you have to make a priority to get sleep. also find something you like about the shift instead of focusing on the negative you will only make yourself more miserable than you already are. :)
