Working with emotionally disturbed children
Hello I currently work for a state psyhiatric facility for adolescents. I'm a new graduate ( I graduated in June '09 with AAS and licensed on Aug 09). I couldn't find a job else where and was offered this position. I have been working here for a little over 6 months. Working in this environment can be very challenging but is extremely rewarding. You are able to form bonds with children and seeing their smiling faces makes the job worthwhile. But the down side is that in this population the children can become extremely violent and will easily strike you with no disregard. Psych nursing is not for everyone- I think it's a good idea to try it per diem and see if you like it. Hope this helps and Good Luck!!.

New Grad accepted position as Psych Nurse. Did I make the right decision..Please help
That's a good idea..I will look into some agencies and see if they can offer per diem..but in your opinion do you think I should stick with Psych or look into Med Surg b/c I would be more marketable?

New Grad accepted position as Psych Nurse. Did I make the right decision..Please help
Hello All and thank you for clicking on my thread.. (New York, Queens) I'm a New grad w/ an AAS-I rec'd my RN license 8/09. I accepted a position on 12/09 working as a Psych nurse for the pediatric population. I would have preferred a position in a hospital setting (i.e. Med SUrg,ER) but as we all know many hospitals are still on the hiring freeze. I have so far enjoyed it but it's very slow paced..nurses are really only busy when there is a crisis and there is a lot of paper work. Also Psych nurses get paid about 20k less than a RN in a hospital. I'm not in it for the money however it would be great to be fairly comoensated for my efforts. I sometimes feel that I have short changed myself accepting this position b/c I need to further my clinical skills and I strongly believe that I will be more marketable with med-surg experience as oppose to Psych experience. Please do voice your opinion and I would GREATLY appreciate your feedback..positive and negitive.. Thank you all for reading..

Applying to Queensborough Community College
Hello I graduated from QCC in May' 09 and now I am an RN since August 09. QCC does prepare you very well for nursing. The program is very demanding and you practically have to kiss your personal life goodbye. But it is all worth it in the end. Try to get the highest score you can on all pre req. I mean high almost 4.0. You have to they only accept the best. I went it with a 3.9 gpa but the program is so hard my GPA when I graduate was a 3.2. Good Luck.

job fair
I attended also. It was a great way to network I did receive a call from an agency (I am a new grad) but I also felt discouraged b/c many did say they were not hiring and so I just left my resume. I know things will pick up soon Just hang in there all. Good Luck!!

Is there a Nursing shortage?
there is a shortage but the hospitals do not have the money to pay for nurses..so they pick the experience over the new grad (like myself) b/c it's more cost effective.

Drop out rate of nurses
I'm in NYC-I totally agree with you..I graduated in June 2009 with my AAS..and just got my RN license in August..it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life..people think it is so easy b/c its 2 years but its not..its hours and hours of studying..but I sacrificed b/c all I have ever wanted to be was a Nurse..
