Career decision????
I have a quesition: I'm in the Army Reserves// 91W/E4 my enlistment is up in a couple of months. I have been accepted to a diploma nursing program for this fall and the program is 3 years long. My goal is to obtain a direct commissioning after I graduate. Here is my question. I am wondering should I re-enlist today and continue on in the reserves or should I just not be enlisted and obtain my RN and then go back in for the direct commissioning??? My reasons for not really wanting to re-enlist today is because all the stuff going on with the war and all I don't want anything like being called up to interfer with my nursing program. I have been waiting a long time to get to this point and would hate to see it put on hold. I just want to know some of you alls opinion on what you would do if you where in my situation. All comments are greatly appreciated. :) :) Rn2b204 :) :balloons: :) :balloons:

I will be doing the full-time day program. I still have 7 more pre-reqs to take. I won't be finish until 5/2007 maybe earlier being that I have 1/2 of my pre-req's taken. I think I want to work for bon secours their new hospital St.Frances. But, I think I really want to be at MCV/Level 1 trauma center in one of their ICU's or in the OR. I will see when I get to that point. Rn2b204 :) :balloons: :) :balloons:

Yes, I had my interview in Nov. 03 and then got my acceptance letter in Jan. 04. So yes I had my interview first. Like I said I didn't take the TEAS test until THIS July I think on 5th. I know it was the first week in July. And they specifically said to me that this has nothing to do with being accepted. I guess we all had that look on our face. :uhoh21: You will do fine. I haven't received my results back as of yet either and really haven't thought about it until I saw your post. I am really excited to be going to Bon Secours. I had a friend to graduate May 03 and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about the program. They keep you really involved there with all the activities they have amongst the students. They have their hands in everthing. It is a really great diploma program. Yes there staff is very professional and they always return your call promptly. No waiting weeks or months for an answer to any question you may have. They don't mind you calling check on your status or anything. They are really nice and undestanding. And the financial aide lady OH MY GOD!!! they need more like her gets real one-on-one with you and makes sure you have all the things you need no running around or mis-information she was on point. You know I could go on and on about that school so I am going to go before I can't stop. But if you want more information on anything I don't mind answering your questions (if I can). :) Good luck with your acceptance process I know you will do fine and soon will be a Bon Secours nursing student. The TEAS Test doesn't determine your acceptance into the program it is just used to see where you are as far as your understanding of basic things english, reading, math, and comprehension. The test is fairly easy nothing to worry about or study for. I took it the earlier part of this month and I was accept to Bon Secours back in Jan. of this year. I think they are going to use it to help with academic counseling you know when you are having trouble with a class they can use that to assist with finding the right teaching aids to assist you to passing. So not a pre-entrance exam. But, yes it is a wonderful school and they do have their bad days like every program does. I think they may just be a little bit more organized and well planned. They are also getting ready to have a BSN program as well. I was told by a co-working that was trying to transfer from one of the area community colleges that they wasn't going to transfer her nursing classes because they are about to redo the whole curriculum. So she is going to go to another communtiy college in the area. Rn2b204, BSMSON/ Fall 2004 :) :balloons: :) :balloons:

Medication Aides
Tasha, Like I stated in a previous post there are still going to be CMA, they are going to be passing meds and registered nurses are still going to be teaching the class to certify them to pass meds. There is nothing you can do about it but live with that fact. If these interest groups are down playing the nurses role and making you feel less of a nurse (because they got CMA's passing medications) then talk to the proper people to try to get that profession ELIMINATED. I would if I was in your situation WITH that sort of attitude about CMA. But until then CMA's are going to be around. Sorry if that gets under your skin. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Rn2b204 :) :balloons: :) :balloons: and on that note I'M done with this thread........................

Medication Aides
I see there is still debating going on whether a CNA or CMA is a nurse or not. Why are y'all beating a dead horse that topic was about Medication aides passing medicine nothing to do if that person is a nurse or not we all know they are not, they know they are not. So why the constant reminder they are still going to be passing medications, with the same scurbs nurses wear and the patient is still going to be mistaking them for nurses........so why bother??? Talk about the legality of the medicine aide passing meds because that is what you all are saying is a nursing duty. But CMA are being employed to do this duty. So something has to be legal about it. If you are worried about your license while at work make sure the CMA is doing the job right or tell them not to pass meds to your patients. I'm sure they won't mind a lesser load. Or better yet find out if your state is violating a law with this practice and do something about it. Rn2be204 :balloons: :balloons:

Nurses crossing picket lines??
I must say that I read this whole thread from the beginning. boy what a thread I enjoyed reading all the posts on here. Zenman, I must say you were very well spoken at all times. There need to be more nurses like you in our world. There are sooooooooooo many that don't look at the bigger issue, many that are not involved in organizations and those nurses that are not taking any steps to better this profession for themselves or future nurses, just complaining. I don't think unionizing will better the nursing profession either. Being more involved will. And if they offer me $5000/week to work you better believe I will be there with bells and whistles on. :rotfl: :) :rotfl: :) (after I get my RN) I'm not the one on strike they are for all I know I might not agree with why they are striking. Zenman I must say your posts keep me reading :) Rn2be204 :balloons: :balloons:

Medication Aides
It is so amazing to me how nurses talk down on other professions like the one you are talking about in this thread CNA, CMA, and MA. I happen to be a CNA and have been for 12 yrs. I have also trained in the military as a EMT-B, and I have also got my Phlebotomy training as well. I have never passed meds, but I have started IV's , draw blood, did straight caths, foley caths, sterile and non-sterile wound care. I have also assisted in a codes and the physician when needed. In military we are allowed to give injections too. We are not trying to take your job some of us are happy with the jobs we have and just because we are not RNs doen't make us any less of a person. And if we are being refered to as a nurse just because we wear the same scrubs why is that so threatning to you??? I think the patient/ client see us as all PROFESSIONALS and may ask us a question that only a RN or LPN can answer that is fine. I wouldn't dare give advice on something that I don't know anything about and I would tell the person that I am not a nurse and have no problem referring them to one and I'm sure none of us do. I think if you feel as thought your license is on the line because the facility you work at staffs CNA, MA etc. then don't work there. But first some of you need to find out exactly what type of training we have instead of assuming and thinking just because we didn't go to school for 2+ years we don't know anything and we can't be taught. I know I was trained by RN's, Medical lab technologist, and Dr's. Most CNA's are using that as a stepping stone to becoming RN's one day and I think that is good for them and the nursing shortage. And to that person that made that coment on some CNAs not having a HS diploma but a GED....there are nurses that didn't graduate from high school and went on to get their GED and on to college. Yes, nursing schools except GED applicants. And what about a Nurse practitioner/ physician assistant she/he doesn't go through schooling nor training a doctor has should she be able to perform like a doctor and should the doctor take on that burden by having them work under them??? I don't think they complain as much as nurses do. And if they do I'm sure it's about something of importance. And some of us need to not be so cruel when talking about CNA, MA, etc. because there are some that all they want to do is be just that CNA or CMA.They don't need to hear nurses putting down the profession harping on how much school they had or didn't have and they are not competent because it wasn't as long as a nurse. It wasn't meant to be. You are missing the whole point. Nursing is so divided right now it's pitiful. Y'all complain about ADN, Diploma degrees, BSN on up to PH.D level.(who's the best, who's the greatest) The higher up one goes the more they seem to look down on each other when in fact you all sat for the same NCLEX to become REGISTERED NURSEs 1ST......or was it different??? NOPE! Just through that out there to say you all are never satisfied with other professions nor your own. STOP COMPLAINING AND HELP MAKE SOME CHANGES for the better. Don't just try to eliminate someones job because you feel your job is in jeopardy because of ones SCRUB OUTFIT AT WORK/ mistaken identity or because they have been certified to pass meds Some of y'all just sound miserable..... Rn2b204, :balloons: :balloons: I hope I will be an inspiration and not an irritation when I become and RN. sorry for this being so long and all the errors I get long winded at times. :) :)

What will YOU do with your first "real" paycheck!?
I hadn't even thought that far yet until I read all of these posts. I must say you all are not joking........ :) 1.) Pay off all the past due bills. 2.) Take my family on a nice long 10 day trip on a cruise or some island. 3.) Trade in my mini-van for me a Brand new Lexus LS400 oo lexus truck. (yeah right I am going to keep my mini-van until the wheels fall off it's only a 2001.) 4.) I am going to do a make-over of my house. 5.) Most of all I just want to make a better life for my family not just pay-check to pay check but actually be able to live comfortable, because right now it's not comfortable when you are always low on funds........ :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

please help me
Hello, the last post has been a while but wanted to put my 2 cents in. I will be going to Bon Secours this Fall 2004. The whole application process was not bad at all. I made sure I had all the minimum requirements and everything before I applied. I got my transcripes from J.Sargeant Reynolds and my high School had them sent over to them. finished my application, got 3 letters of recommendation from my job from 3 of the RN's I work with. The essay was the biggest thing to me just putting into words what they wanted to know and they clearly state what they want to know and there is no need to go into great detail just stick to the point. I think they wanted to know what made me choose nursing, what made me choose their program, and what are my future goals as far as nursing. After that it was waiting to get an interview. Which took about 2 months to get an interview. But the lady that handles all of your information and makes sure you got everything in is really nice. She made it very clear that I could call her anytime I wanted to check on the status of my application and if she was not available to talk I could leave a message and expect a call back by the close of business that day. She told me when the academic committe met to decide on who would get in or not. She told me the day that they would be meeting and adviced that I call her back that evening to know what the decision was. I called back on Jan. 9 @ 4pm and she told me that I was accepted. She was really great during the whole process, answered all my questions. I also have a friend that graduated from there in May 2003 who told me so many good things about the school. The instructors are willing to help those that are having trouble and make sure they do all they can to help with passing. None of that if you don't get it them tough. They take pride in what they do and in the reputation of their school. They have a flexible program and you get to take your prereqs with your nursing class. Although this may sound a bit rough but it is recommended that you take the sciences with the nursing courses to help with them. The traditional program takes 3 years but if you have all your sciences taken then you can do the accelerated program and finish in 2 years. The program is not a rush and they really prepare you for your bachelors at any other university that offer RN-BSN. when you complete the program you have only 2-3 prereqs to take and that is in humanities and arts. You will have the foundation to perform excellent as a RN. I have had some nurses say they can tell a nurse that has graduated from Bon Secours because they are so knowledgeable and confident for being right out of nursing school. And yes all of Bon Secours credits transfers to other Universities. They make sure of that because they prepare their students for a BSN and they have and excellent 1st time NCLEX pass rate. It's been 100% since 2000. I think I have said enough for right now hope this helps. RN2b204 @ Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing. And by the way they don't have a waiting list nor a test to take to get on a waiting list either. Submitted my application in Sept.03 got my interview in Nov. 03 got my official acceptance in Jan. 04 for the Fall of 2004. WOW :) :rotfl: :) :rotfl: :) :rotfl:

Can a surg. tech. "circulate" a case -give medications?
Let's everyone calm down and take a breather. I am currently a nursing student and reading these post about the field of nursing that I am highly interested in makes me sick to here the nurse bashing the ST or CST. I hope I don't develop the "HIGH AND MIGHTY" attitude making others feel beneath me. What seems to be the problem no one is trying to take your job as a RN but everyone has a role and why blame, which I hear a lot of nurse say about techs they are not licensed and they won't be named in the lawsuit if something goes wrong. Why would something go wrong if you are a prudent nurse and know what your role is while you are in charge of the OR. If your hospital policy is to have a CST in the OR for whatever reason then they have to be there but to say that they can't be blamed or named if something goes wrong so you don't want them there. Seems to me that you don't want to be the only fall guy or do you think all CST are not competent enough to work in the OR? To suggest for someone to go back to school so they can be as good as you is a ignorant thing to say so when you become an RN that makes you better than the next person that is not a RN? RN's can't run the hospital by themselves nor the OR by themselves. Let's not bash each others occupation because everyone in the health care field MD, RN, LPN, TECH, HOUSEKEEPING, ETC. all have the same priority and that is the PATIENT/CLIENT. excuse the rambling and all the typos and such :) I am commenting to Carsha about what she posted.
