Personal Care Home Health
Thanks for the response Siwan, I think you are right and I may try posting there too! However I did go to the interview today and it went well so I can only keep my fingers crossed I hear back! I got more Information and it appears that it is mostly a quality assurance and review type of position and no real hands on skilled nursing. Mostly completing visits and doing quality assurance reviews, providing education and monitoring care provided under the Medicaid program by the for profit agencies. It sounds like a very interesting field to get into that I'd enjoy. One other problem is that it would be quite a big paycut for me but I hear that is to be expected moving from a private for profit agency to the county health department. Lots to think about! That is if I get a call back of course. I'm thinking positively.

Personal Care Home Health
Hello Everyone, So I have an interview with the county health department that I am very excited about as I have been wanting to get into a government agency. The job is home health registered nurse but mostly monitoring personal care assistants under the Medicaid personal care program. This program offers personal care such as bathing, transferring, light housekeeping, assistance with eating, etc. and those services are monitored by RNs from the health department. It seems the job would be doing assessments on clients, assessing need for personal care services, and monitoring the care given by the personal care assistants. I will get more information when I go for the interview. Anyone have experience or thoughts in this type of setting? I am currently a psychiatric nurse doing home visits and was looking for a change.

Best appointment planner?
Thanks for the thoughts guys! Like some of you, I ended up getting a paper calendar simply because we do get so many cancellations or no shows and lots of rescheduling. I figured it would be easier to see in a giant calendar than on my small phone.

Best appointment planner?
I just accepted a psych home health position. What do you all use to plan all of your appointments with patients? I'm finding in psych there are a lot of cancelled visits and reschedules and no shows and at first I was going to use a calendar app on my IPhone but now wondering if a paper calendar I write on would be better. What do you all find most helpful to keep track of everything?

Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
Very cool, let us know how you like the Linz shoes! I'm curious as to why the g500 were discontinued. The Linz looks exactly the same. I'm sure there is something different about them but that I just can't tell. I think you'll like them!

Most comfortable shoes???
I wore Birkenstocks and also the "Klogs" brand in the "Naples" style which were amazingly comfy. The Klogs were my favorite though. Thick sole like danskos but soft, cushy, yet supportive.

Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
I am also tall and I wore the Birkenstocks G500 as posted above. They were very comfy throughout nursing school. I also had a pair of the Klogs in the "Naples" style which is a thick sole and I have to say those were more cushy and heaven like when walking in them so I ended up wearing those more often. But, they did add height. However, the Klogs "mission" style is almost just like the Naples, but not as high of a sole. So it would be maybe 1 inch as opposed to 2.5 inches. I haven't tried those but they will probably be the next shoe I buy. If the Klogs mission is still too high for your liking, I'd go with the Birkenstocks cause those are probably as low to the ground as you'll get in a nursing shoe. I got a slightly used pair on eBay. :)

PHN environment?
Sounds very interesting Klone! You sure do get to see and do alot it seems. How much experience did you position require of you or did you need any training one you were hired? I'm especially curious since you are the only RN in the clinic.
-
PHN environment?
Thanks for the response Lacey! Your position sounds really great and exactly like something I would like to do! I currently applied for a HIV/aids nursing/case management PHN position which I really think I would enjoy doing as it involves alot of teaching. I'm hoping the employers notice my Psych background and see it as a plus too! I just hope only having worked at a state psych facility for 8 months doesn't look bad. It was mostly forensic and I resigned because it was hard being around violent people everyday. This PHN job is only one job I saw posted in my area that didnt require a Bachelors and was within a close enough distance. Hearing stories like yours just makes me want to get into PHN that much more. :)

PHN environment?
Very cool Sunmoon. I like the idea if having some independence but not ring completely alone. I'm glad you really enjoy your job! It's encouraging to hear stories of nurses who enjoy their position. :)

PHN environment?
Hello, I am currently working as a psych nurse at an acute care facility but hoping to move into community/public health. I'm curious as to what your working environments are. Do you work in an office? Clinic? Alongside other nurses or do you work alone? I know this can vary but I'm curious as to what others experiences have been. Also, any suggestions on where to look besides county and state government websites? Im wondering if there might be other places I hadn't thought of. Thanks for any advice!

Nursing school help! What to do...
Hi Tiffany. Do you mind sharing how you found your aesthetics nurse position? I'm not sure if I should just keep looking for postings or if I should call dermatologist offices. None of the dermatologist office websites have listings for RNs or even indicate if they ever hire RNs. Any advice is appreciated!

Not sure what to do!
I may be offered a per diem position that is only 8 shifts a month at a hospital I've really been wanting to work for! 6 months ago I took a job at a place I heard horrible things about, but took the job anyway for experience and to give it a try. Well it really is as bad I had heard and I am not comfortable there. However, the job I was offered at the nice hospital is not full time which is kind of what I need. However, the manger i interviewed with said its good to get your foot in the door as per diem and that she may have full time positions coming in July. I don't have children and I live with my sister, but still have plenty of bills and rent, etc. I originally planned to do both jobs, but now I'm learning that my current job might not let me take off for the full week and 2 day orientation required for the new job. I hear great things about this hospital and would be amazing to work in a hospital where I could see myself in many years. Anyone ever find themselves in a similar situation or have any advice? I'm torn. Thanks for reading all of that! :)

Mandated colors
I work in a psych hospital and we can wear street clothes or any kind of scrubs which is pretty nice. But, all clinical staff have to wear a maroon button up scrub jacket/top over everything. So, when its warm, it's pretty annoying. Good thing my unit it always cold.

Suggestions for Cheap/Sale scrubs?
I don't know if you have a Rugged Wearhouse in you area but they are a discount clothing store and usually have a few racks with scrubs. They sell brand new scrubs, the value brands and also the name brands for 6.99 a piece.

Koi Mystery Scrub Top Purchases
In glad you liked the scrubs you ended up getting! I think I got the ruffle one too but I actually like it! The only problem is that it's a little frilly for my psych hospital where I try to draw less attention to myself. lol But the rest of them Ill be able to wear. :) I love shopping at goodwill stores and buy a lot of regular clothes there but I've never found scrubs I liked or that fit there. I always look though because its one of those things where you never know when you'll get lucky! Also you can find very cheap basic scrubs just about anywhere like at Walmart, rugged warehouse, etc, but there are certain styles and fits that I like that those stores never sell. Depends on what I'm looking for at the time I guess!

Koi Mystery Scrub Top Purchases
Kgirl, if you end up purchasing any you'll have to tell me if you like the ones you end up receiving! Congrats on landing your first job! We are in the same boat. :)

Koi Mystery Scrub Top Purchases
Hello! So on the koihappiness.com website they have an offer where you can purchase between 1 and 5 Koi scrub tops for 9.99 each. The catch is, the top you get will be a surprise and there are no returns. Well, I love a surprise, and I'm probably setting myself up for major disappointment, but I just ordered 5. lol I am a new nurse and just building up my scrub wardrobe so I said what the heck. Total with shipping came a little over 11 dollars per top. If I don't like I can always sell on ebay! :) Anyone else ever purchased the mystery tops?

Lightweight scrubs for hot environments
Thanks Tiffy! I remember seeing this style and thought it looked see through so I didn't try it on, but after you suggested these I went to read some reviews and some people are saying alot of the prints are not see through once you put them on. So, I think I'm going to go back to the store I saw them in and at least try one on. Thanks for the suggestion!

Littmann classic II S.E. or Littmann Cardiology III
I got a cardiology iii for school ad I was really happy I got that. Never had a problem hearing things and I oftentimes felt like asking my classmates if they wanted to borrow mine so they could hear what I could. I tried to hold back though. lol good luck! I got the purple color and loved it. I also had it engraved. ETA- I had the plum color and after two years still looks good. Close up you might find some marks on it but definitely doesn't look crummy like a light color might after two years.

Lightweight scrubs for hot environments
Hello. I am finding that I get very warm on the unit I work on and I like to stay cool. It also doesn't help that my job requires me to wear a short sleeved button up scrub top over my clothes as part of their dress code. We can wear street clothes or scrubs under the button up top but I prefer to wear scrubs as they don't cling and are most comfy. BUT I need recommendations for brands that come in materials that are very light weight so that I don't get so hot and don't feel like I have several thick layers of scrubs on. I saw some seersucker like material in a scrub top once and wonder if I should have got it. Ideas?? Thanks guys!!!

Disinfecting scrubs?

Why info on white culture omitted from cultural compence in textbooks?
Please tell me what would be taught in a "white mainstream culture" class related to nursing? What specific information do you believe is being excluded from instruction? I don't think anyone has been able to explain this to me yet people are arguing that so much is being excluded.
-
Why info on white culture omitted from cultural compence in textbooks?
Well, your classmate also has to use common sense. Just because a nursing textbook says a certain race of people may like to shower at a certain time after giving birth, you don't refuse to let them shower when they ask for a different time. Thats just silly. The point is to show students that it's ok, and normal, when certain people DO want something done a different way. You don't go into a hospital forcing people to assimilate to any cultural practice and hopefully nursing schools aren't teaching this.
