  1. I also received a gift today that caught me offguard after being with the family for only 3 months. I tried to refuse it and they insisted I take it. I know its unethical to do so but its also impolite to refuse more than once. I guess in the PDN world we have some different benefits. I'm an independant contractor so I think the family recognizes my losses with no health benefits, vacation, paid time off, etc. I'm there 40 hrs per week, taking care of 54 yr old mom so I'm kind of a permanent fixture. LOL
  2. I strongly agree with the above post. Just remember that we the nurses are the professionally trained party, not the family. Your license is your lifeline, don't play Russian roulette.
  3. Is there such a thing as "easy" in nursing? If a nurse ever thinks nursing is easy then its time for a new profession. My PDN job is easier than an AC or LTC facility but still demanding at times without the stress.
  4. i say go for it! i went back to school at 40 to enter this career and love it! my wife was completly supportive and liked the idea of me bettering myself and our family. the rewards are endless and the satisfaction at the end of the day makes it all worth it. even if i clean up body fluids. my thoughts on the body waste thing is just this....if you don't embrace every aspect of nursing as "care" then you are a poor nurse. i'm not saying you have to like it, but if its the care a patient requires then it is nursing. read this: [color=#20287f]the florence nightingale pledge i solemnly pledge myself before god and presence of this assembly; to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. i will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. i will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. with loyalty will i endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.
  5. Interesting read so far. Not knowing anything other than what's posted about this case it sounds like the agency should try sending in a male nurse to change the dynamics. She may not be as snappy with a man. Personally, I wouldn't tolerate her unacceptable behavior and try to use a more therapuetic approach that validates her feelings. Sounds like mom is attention-seeking and a social worker may be needed at this point to work with mom.
  6. At work now....so yes my laptop is a great tool!! The family actually suggested it and gave me the network code. I manage a mountain bike race team so it leaves me plenty of time to work on that in between tasks. I love my PDN job. 9-5pm, M-F, NO weekends. Getting more excited about PDN work. Thought it would be a temp job for a couple of years until I have my RN but with the baby boomers approaching eldery years I think the PDN market is going to explode. Seriously considering sticking with it. You can't beat the freedom and stress-free environment.
  7. First of all, CONGRATS on your licensing!!!!! I also passed on Tuesday and licensed on Wed. here in PA. Small world huh? I would highly recommend not fudging anything. Do you want to jeopardize your credibility and integrity with a move like that? I think that may set you up for future dishonest actions. Every nurse has been where you are. Keep applying, even for the jobs that require experience. Sell yourself. I started work on Thursday in a private duty position and was chosen over several people with a lot of experience 4 weeks prior to my NCLEX date. Its all in how you present yourself and your confidence. And right now, you should be feeling pretty good about yourself!!!!! Good luck and stay honest. Karma is a b*tch.
