MCC - Nursing Students Starting 2009
Good to hear some updates. I'm starting the 1500's Jan 18th - any advise? This thread has been very helpful already with getting books, shots, uniforms and paperwork - thanks to everyone taking the time to post. Hopefully I will be able to help some students that start after me! Any advise (from the upper classmen) LOL would be greatly appreciated.

MCC- admission process anyone know?
Try to schedule your HESI ASAP because they only let 1000 students test per year (for all selective admission programs) - Registration for the HESI started 7/15/09, there is a $55.00 fee to take the exam. They also have a very informative nursing seminar that you can goto for free - they will answer all of your questions. The schedule of these seminars are in the selective admission packet online, but the next few dates are 8/10, 8/24, 9/08, 9/23. Hope this helps and Good luck!

I PASSED!!!!! 4th times a charms. Heres how
Congradulations! I was excited as I was reading your journey - You should feel extremely proud! I wouldn't let your family take any excitement away from your accomplishments. That just sounded so hurtful for them to compare you to your sister. Well that's all past you now . . . . . go find the perfect job!

Cheating on final
This "Ann" is completely ridiculous! I don' understand how people think they can not make any effort to study and ask someone who has spent the time needed to study and has sacraficed going out, seeing your kids, working less hours, losing sleep, whatever it may be to achieve a good grade - but then to help them. It seems people like Ann really don't think anything is wrong and she could go all the way through nursing school (if she doesn't get caught) and never even feel bad or disappointed in herself - that makes it even worse. Karma does come around sooner or later.

**St. Johns, Beaumont, or Henry Ford...Job opprotunity question**
St John has benefits if you work 40-47 hours in a pay period (2weeks), 48-69 hours, and 70-80 hours. The cost that you pay depends on how many hours you are hired in to work and if you need benefits for just you, spouse, or a family. They offer health, dental, vision, life, 403b with a match, short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, holiday pay, and TUITION REIMBURSEMENT, etc. Hope this helps

Buying a Stethoscope
I am starting the Nursing program and have been looking for a stethoscope. This was very helpful - thank you to all that take the time to post messages, they really do help.

how long did it take you, to finish up all pre-req?
Taking your time is a great idea. Since you have 2 small children you first need to adjust to the schedule of taking classes and taking care of your family. Time management is key - commiting a specific time for school. Taking your time and slowing increasing more difficult classes will prepare you for the high demands of the nursing program. Depending on how many classes you take at a time and what pre-req's are required for your school you could have them done in a year. Some schools require many more pre-req's before starting the program and could take you 2 years. Either way try to complete every class that you are able to so that only the program classes remain, to have a lighter load.

Nurse Tech
In Michigan they are called Nurse assistant or PCT - Patient Care Tech.

Help
I would let them know ASAP - you don't want to mess it up for both of you. It may be fine. Where I work - it is allowed to have family in the same department if they are in equal postions and one or the other doesn't have any authority over the other. Also try to search for the policies for that particular company. GOOD LUCK to you both!

**St. Johns, Beaumont, or Henry Ford...Job opprotunity question**
I know St John states on thier qualifications for a nurse assistant and/or PCT they want you to at least be enrolled in a nursing program and to have fundamentals completed. I'm not sure how strict they are about that.

Taking a poll ... MCC or Baker???
MCC for sure - They are accredited, they accept more students (152 this year), they are way cheaper $72.00 a credit hour - I think Baker is $185.00 a credit hour, and entrance is based on GPA of 3 classes (Micro, A&P, and ENG) and HESI score (both 50%). Baker is more complicated - lose points if you transfer so many credits, lose points if you repeat any classes, GPA, HESI, etc. Also I don't know if it has changed but Baker uses your most current HESI score (even if you retook it and the score went down) and Macomb uses your highest score from any year. If you get a chance goto a Nursing seminar at MCC, they have them twice a month and it will cover all requirements and questions that you have. It is worth an hour of your time. GOOD LUCK!
