First I have never heard of volunteer hours, it must be a california thing. How hard english is, depends on the professor teaching. I had a very easy time in my english course. Most of the people I talk to at other colleges say that freshman english is easy. Chemistry and Biology on the other hand, arent quite that fun. They aren't easy, BUT you can make it easy on yourself by actually studying every day, setting up a schedule to study, and not craming. Best advice, would be to look at a lot of schools, not just one or two. Nursing is a tough major to get into, so options are your best friend. Good Luck

I have made my decision on this whole deal, I have talked to a few MD anesthesiologist and 2 CRNAs. I am a people person, and from what the MDs have told me nurses and MDs look at a patient. Accord to the MDs they focus more on the illness while nurses focus more on the patient in a whole. Which has led me to decide to go for CRNA. Money isn't an issue, I know people hear that and say I am full of it, But I really am not. The reason why I asked this question was because my ex-fiance's mother would pay 100% of my tuition, book, room and board etc if I became a doctor, including a 10,000 a month salary while in school. If I go nursing, I pay for everything myself. So yes it was a hard decision, but wouldn't you think that if money was my main concern I would be pre-med right now instead of Nursing? So CRNA it is!

WoW where is this at??? The hospitals here in Charlotte don't seem to be affected by the economy, I have even heard plans of a new hosiptal being built

I think that doctors/nurses will be over worked (wayy more than they already are) and request more pay, and the hospitals refuse to give more pay, so they leave. Leaving us in a bigger shortages, longer wait times, more and more over worked -under paid nurses/doctors, leading them to leave (dominos effect) Just imagine 100 MORE people going into a major city hospital, which isn't that huge of a number, but imagine how much MORE work its going to be for nurses and doctors, how much longer wait times is going to be.. I think that if Obama really wants this to work in the way that he wishes it to, he needs to set a minimum of how many nurses work per bed, and doctors per bed, which will require hospitals to HIRE more doctors and nurses, so that a huge jump in patients wont be such a huge effect (WHILE MANDATING SALARY MINIMUM, AND COST OF LIVING RAISE EVERY YEAR) I know that sounds far fetched but is it really? If the customer base increases (more like when) they will need more staff, BUT wont hire more staff, just overwork the staff they already have present. What do you think?

Interesting point. i agree wasteful spending needs to be gone. But this new plan should put the care givers out in the cold, because that will drive people and doctors away from hospitals and stuff, and into private practice

I know they will defer payments, but making the monthly payment is the issue, having a lower than expected salary isn't a good reason the not make the monthly payments:bugeyes:

Private school, 1/2 scholarship, 1/4 room and board scholarship, 35,000 in parents plus loan, 34,500 in federal loans, 6,000 in nursing loans. (for BSN)

Someone brought up a point in a thread about the possibility of health care salaries going DOWN if the new health care reform is passed......Has anyone heard of this??? In my opinion nurses don't get paid enough as it is, even nursing specialities don't get paid nearly what they should. With college tuition on the rise every year, most colleges about $1,000 a year per student. If health care salaries go lower, how in the world are we going to pay off student loans in a decent time. When I graduate my payments are going to be around 800 a month for 10 years! and thats just for my BSN not including Grad school. What are your thoughts on this new insurance plan? Do you really think this will drive salaries down? or up? (I would think with more people going to the hospitals etc the demand for skilled care will go up, which will drive up salaries (supply and demand right?)

you are probably going to be soo tired that your grades are going to be a lot lower than you think they will be. I have a friend in a easy major (business) and is working as a cna on night shift 4 days a week. Its horrible and she is extremely smart, and her grades droped a whole letter grade. And only sundays to study????? Thats insane. if you have anatomy during any of those times, forget about it! you will fail if you only try to have one day to study. Any person on here that has taken that course will tell you the same. (unless you have a very very very very good memory) *thats not an attack on you, or how smart you are* Nusing is not a piece of cake, it requires studying! And like the person above stated, most clinical sites, will not allow you to attend if you work past a certain time (my school its 10:30) I am a CNA and my school's board for the BSN program told me i can not work my first year period, and during clinicals, weekend only, or I will be suspended from nursing. (And I made a 27 on my ACT which is pretty darn good, qualified me for a huge scholarship) and I am not even willing to try to work at all, except maybe summers, but doubtful.

Being a nurse DOES NOT HELP GET YOU INTO MED SCHOOL!!!!!!! This is what a Medical School administrator said to me: 1) adcoms don't consider nursing to be a hard major. Actually it is considered easy. Chemical engineering is considered hard. 2) look at the stats from AAMC http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/2008/mcatgpabymaj08.htm Specialized Health Science majors have the lowest mean score in every section of the MCAT and gpas on the low side. This explains why while 42% of all applicants get admitted to medical school, only 31% of specialized health science majors do. 3) nursing philosophy is different than that of medicine. In my opinion nursing training is torture for someone who wants to think like a physician.

No, and i have talked to medical administration and they think nursing is A EASY major. The things nurses study and med students studies are nothing alike! The stuff nurses know, isn't going to help all that much (if any) go pre-med if your thinking of becoming a doctor, gpa will be better!

I am trying to decide weather I should become a CRNA or anesthesiologist. Can anyone help with the pro's and con's of each What do CRNA do that is different than a anesthesiologist? What can a anesthesiologist do that a CRNA can't? Any other information would be great (I have a huge interest in anesthesiology, and I am in a BSN program now, but I have been told to look into becoming a MD instead of a CRNA.) I would rather die than be in some type of sitiuation where I can't do anything for myself. I hae told everyone I know (so that there are no confusion on my wishes) to pull the plug if chances are less that 50/50 and after 1 year, pull it. Death doesn't scare me as much as being old. I'm not saying death doesn't scare me, but it scares me far less than being old, and not being able to do the things I want to.

Kindly say that you are here to help them and its not important what your religious beliefs are. You really want to advoid this at all cost! Its a very very touchy thing with patients. My family always told me to say the following "I'm sorry, Its against our policy to talk about my personal beliefs, but if you would like, I can help you find a preacher (or whatever they call a spiritual advisor)" I find that to be a really easy and kind way of getting around it. I have been advised even if they have the same beliefs, not to discuss them because you are taking your focus off of what you should be doing (especially as a student) Hope this helps :)

You do not need to retake the CNA test AS LONG AS: your cna license is current and in good standing in your current cna license state. North Carolina is the only state in the us where you have to retake the CNA test. If there is a fee, its usually small

I have looked at getting it and plan on it, you can get mal-practice insurance CHEAP, and just so you know MOST colleges malpractice insurance only covers you while your at your college, once you graduate and someone decides to name you on a suit, your responsible for it 100% your college malpractice insurance will not cover it, nor will your current police (its like $29 a year for 1,000,000/6,000,000 coverage (1 mil per occurance, 6 a year) thats why I am joining

I dont know too much about visas, but maybe you can talk to your human resource manager about pursuing nursing as your career WITH THAT HOSPITAL and see if they will still file a H1-B visa, it doesn't hurt to ask. Im sorry that I couldn't be much help other than that

Go to your board of nursing dean or someone in that area, explain what happened, and tell them exactly what she said. If she does fail you, you have a back up, and the board can reverse your grade through a grade audit. You were NOT a student when that occured, you were a CNA, you are not held accountable for that in any way, shape or form. Thats why you need to go to administration ASAP
