  1. I'm a little late to the party. I received my acceptance email today FYI. Good luck to everyone.
  2. Thanks HouTx. I will try in the NP specialty area of the forum. I would like to work with a doctor or be part of a practice. I currently work in the cath lab and am considering to pursue that in some sort of capacity as an NP/PA. I just wanted the opinions and anecdotal responses, and have been spending a lot of time researching about the financial, legal, and future implications of my decision. Thank you.
  3. Mbart: Humble is near Spring/Woodlands area and there are several hospitals there. I know a few people that live there and it is nice suburban housing. Atascocita is just east of Humble. Pearland is a little different, there is an Old Pearland that is in close proximity to the clear lake area, but then there is a newer Pearland which is by 518 and 288. You can take 288 straight up to the medical center about 20 minutes with no traffic. Pearland is nice and growing, they recently built the Pearland Town Center which is a big walk through shopping center. There are several neighborhoods in Pearland and depending on the area, there is new housing or older housing available. I believe there are also some smaller hospitals nearby, but the medical center is near, and the clear lake hospitals are also within a reasonable distance (20-30 minutes depending on which part of Pearland). Good luck.
  4. I am debating between going to Nurse Practitioner School versus Physicians Assistant. I've tried to read about the differences with emphasis on Texas because there are variations state to state but have not really found anything clearly defining the two. I would just like to know any personal experiences or opinions on the matter. A little background on myself Nurse for 4 years med/tele/cath lab Just finished BSN this past August I can apply to NP school now Will need 6 classes in order to apply for PA school Thank you and I look forward to responses.
  5. Most major hospitals acquire new grads about 2 times a year, May/June and Dec/Jan. During these times they train them all together. When I first graduated, I was hired with no license but was to sit for the NClex with a few months. I acquired a GN permit and was paid by the hospital while doing orientation and studying for my exam. Hope that helps.
  6. mboc replied to RNICUTX's topic in Texas Nursing
I think with your credentials and experience, you should have no problem finding a job. The GN market here is difficult d/t the major hospitals only acquiring new grads 2/3 times a year and training them all at once. Good luck and welcome.

I think we need more information on your background to better assess if that is fair. 23 dollars would good for a GN in a large city, or lower level RN in a more rural area.
  8. From my experience, which I was a GN in 2009 with an ADN about 24 per hour with good benefits. South of Houston.
  9. Squat is right about the traffic in downtown and rush hour. Personally, I'm south of Houston (Galveston 40 miles south). Where I am, relatively no traffic, state hospital, teaching hospital, and only about 45 minutes to Houston. In order of areas I think you should look into: Clear Lake area about 25 minutes south of downtown. Clear Creek ISD is rated very highly, and there are several nice neighborhoods and hospitals in the area (Clear Lake Regional, Mainland Medical Center, St. John's, and UTMB in Galveston (30 mins). Cypress area. This is northwest of Houston and is a growing area with plenty of suburbs and new hospitals. I don't have too much experience but I know it is definitely a place to look into. Spring/Woodlands area. This is north of Houston, and is considered a more affluent area with plenty of hospitals and suburban living, and the school is system is rated well. West Houston/Katy. West of Houston with plenty of Hospitals and a lot of city life. Sugarland area. This area is southwest of Houston, and offers many hospitals like Methodist, St. Lukes, Memorial Hermann. There are nice neighborhoods considered a more affluent area. The major hospital systems found in Houston are: Memorial Hermann, Methodist, St. Lukes, and MD Anderson. I hope my post helps and feel free to contact me with any other questions. Good luck.
  10. I am looking into getting a job at Northeast Methodist Hospital in the Cath Lab. I was just looking for any type of pertinent information. Opinions about the area Opinions about the hospital Pay grades Anything and everything Little background. 2 years med tele/cardiology experience, 1.5 years cath lab. Currently working in the cath lab. I look forward to hearing from everyone.
  11. Seriously, I am terrible at this allnurses thing. I tried to send a private message but my profile states that I am not allowed to. So I apologize to those that sent me messages. Someone asked me how long it took for me to get a response. I got a response about late July and others got it early August. My sister actually got a denial letter, then a week later received an acceptance letter due to more spots opening up. To the person that asked about Med/Surg 3, that is a very hard class. This goes for anyone, just utilize the books and narrow down to each specific disease process and learn to be able to differentiate between disease and what the nurse must do that is specific to each disease. On the test, if there is one thing that would cause the least amount of harm, or the one thing that you could do and walk away then choose that. Don't forget ABCs, Actual vs. Risk, and don't over analyze each question. Mark
  12. Hey guys I responded to this thread and continue to follow it. I am a recent graduate (May 2009) from the San Jacinto ADN program. I will be studying for the NCLEX for the next week and wanted to see if anyone was interested in an informal question and answer with me at a local coffee shop (PM me for location). I am willing to answer any questions, confirm or deny rumors, and anything else anyone wants to know. **[Caveat: I do not claim that the statements that I will make represent the current practices of the college nor do I guarantee any of my statements as fact. I will answer questions solely based on my observations and experiences from my progression through the program. Thank you.]** I didn't mean to thread crap but I thought this could be useful to new applicants and prospective students. Also, any other inquiries just PM me. Good luck. Mark
  13. Hey guys! First post ever lol! I am in my last semester in the ADN program at San Jacinto. I got in the first time using my ACT score which was a 27. A lot of the people that got in applied more than once and had As on all of their prerequisites. There are a lot of changes that are going to occur with the program. I believe they are planning on placing an entrance HESI type exam before you start the program. But as of right now I don't have any official information on that. There is a retention specialist named Amanda Warren that you may want to contact to get as much information about the program and the things they are changing. Any questions you guys have I will try my best to answer. Good Luck!!
