CNA hourly pay rate?
Here in Long Island, NY you can make up to $18.75 an hour. That's what my friend is making at a nursing home.

I have a dilemma..Ughhhhhhhh
I finally got a test date in the mail. It's on March 27th and I'm so nervous!!! I've been studying the book and all of my definitions so I'm not too worried about that. I'm worried about the skills test. I wish they had cna refresher courses, I think it's really dumb that they don't! I'm gonna have to study them on youtube. Does anyone know any other recourses I can study from for the skills part of the test??

I have a dilemma..Ughhhhhhhh
When I get my test date in the mail do you know if it will say what skills I will be doing? And does anyone know of a place were I can get updated information like we do when we go to inservices. I'm sure my CNA book from 2007 has old info in it...

I have a dilemma..Ughhhhhhhh
Thanks everyone for your replies. I contacted Prometric and they said I don't have to take the class over, I just have to take a test. I have to take the written test and the skills test. My problem is, where the heck do I practice my skills??!!! I don't remember how to do them...Ughhhhhhhhhh! Any suggestions? I have 3 chances to pass the test and then if I still don't pass then I have to take the class over. Does anyone know where I can practice my skills?? Thanks again! ~Lonnie

I have a dilemma..Ughhhhhhhh
I've been a CNA since March 2007 and I've been out of work since November 2007. I haven't been able to find a job as a CNA anywhere!! I've been to every single nursing home in my area and they keep telling me they will hold my application for 6 months (so frustrating). So my dilemma is, My certification is going to lapse in 8 days ! I don't know what to do. I can't take the class over again because I'm attending night school. My question is, I live in NY and I was wondering if I can just take a test to reinstate my certification or do I have to take the class over again? OMG! Please tell me I can take a test...LOL!! Does anyone know of any nursing home on Long Island that will hire me before November 30th??:crying2::crying2:

What do you think about staffing agency's?
I live on Long Island and I've been looking for a job for months now. I finally got a call this morning from a staffing agency and I have an interview for tomorrow morning. My question is, has anyone ever worked for a staffing agency before and if so how do you like it?

Qestions about being a CNA
We chart everything down on our CNA accountability sheets.

Qestions about being a CNA
Maybe it is a state to state issue. Here in NY, were not allowed to access the patient's charts. The only thing we have access to is the patient's care plans. At the end of our shift we have to fill out our CNA accountability sheets.

I can't get that smell out of my mind...........
To me, when someones dying their room smells rotten.

Qestions about being a CNA
It is in the patient's charts but that's confidential information and the Nurses Aides aren't allowed to look at them. We only see the care plans.

Qestions about being a CNA
Where I worked they didn't tell you if the patient had aids. They don't have to. It's a patient rights rule. While I was taking the CNA class my instructor told us that also. She said to make sure you take proper precautions with every resident because they don't tell you if they have a disease. Their will be a pink sticker on their door to inform you to use universal precautions but they don't tell you what they have.

LPN Prep Program at Farmingdale LIEOC
Has anyone attended this program? If so, can you tell me about it? I just got off the phone with an admissions counselor. She was very helpful and told me to call her back the first week in August and she'll tell me the testing dates. I'm so excited that I finally found an LPN prep course and it's the same place they offer the LPN program at!! Now if only I can find someone who's taking the prep course...LOL!!

I want to be a CNA...
It's very rewarding working as a CNA but it's also really hard and it's not for everyone. It's a very, very stressful job! I agree with FuzzyWuzzy. Make sure you do some research before you take the classes. Good luck to you!

How long did it take you to complete your CNA program
The CNA program I was in took 9 weeks and the last week we were in a nursing home for clinicals. The classes were Monday- Friday from 8-3

Qestions about being a CNA
Where I live, in the state of NY we had to take a written test and if we passed that then we had to take the skills test. I received my certification in the mail about one week after passing the tests. There's always a background check involved when your looking for employment. My CNA class was 9 weeks and the last week we did the clinical part of the program in a nursing home. The only thing we had to buy was scrubs, a watch and flash cards. I think that all shifts are hard. I worked the 3-11 shift 5 days a week and it was hard!! If you choose to work overnights don't necessarily think that's it's gonna be easy because it's not. You still have to change the Residents a few times during the night and some of them have a certain time they like to get up and it may be before your shift ends. It may be an easier compared to the morning and evening but it's not easy....LOL!! Good luck to you :nuke:

I can't get that smell out of my mind...........
Colostomy bags.....EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! They smell so bad!!!!!!!! I had a Resident who had Cedif and she would put her hands in her brief and then paint the walls and everything else around her. It was so gross!!!! Every night it took me over 30 minutes to take care of her. I will never ever forget that smell!!!!!!!

Question about online study
Hi! Right now I'm a CNA and I want to become an RN. I need to get my Associates degree in liberal arts first before I can apply to a nursing program. I'm leaning toward getting my A.A.S degree online. My question is, do you think it's a good idea?? My BF attended Kaplan online so that's one of the schools I requested info from. The University Of Phoenix is another one. I want to do this online because it's super convenient! I have two kids, my BF works and right now we only have 1 car which he uses to get back and forth to and from work. I want to make sure I make the right decision beofre I go ahead and sign up. So what do you think??

How do I renew my certification?
I haven't worked since November 2007 and my CNA certification expires the 31st of this month. How do I recertify? I did receive a letter in the mail saying that I have to contact my last employer and have them fill out some paper work and send it in. I really don't want to call them....LOL! I left on great terms with them but I don't want to tell them that I haven't been able to find work for over a year (It's kind of embarassing). Is there another way of recertifying?

I love being a CNA, but....
I know exactly how you feel! I was hired at a LTC facility as soon as I recieved my certification. I worked there for 6 months and then finally resigned. I couldn't take it anymore. I loved my Resident's and some of the people I worked with but my other co workers made it so difficult for me. No one helped me and every time I asked for one of the other CNA's to spot me with a lift they would give me the biggest attitude and then make me wait forever before they finally came to help me. I would always have to answer their Resident's call bells because they never did. They would speak another language to one another when I was in the room and I knew they were talking about me. I was a good CNA and they didn't like that. I was assigned a unit to work on but I floated on that unit. So when one of the other CNA's had off I would have their list and their Resident's loved me.They loved me so much, they would ask for me all the time and I guess that ****** the other CNA'S off. I worked the 3-11 shift 5 days a week and some nights I left there in tears, that's how bad they treated me. So I finally resigned a year ago and I've been out of work ever since. I regret my decision to leave. I really miss my Residents and I'm mad that I let those people run me out of there! Just hang tight and don't make the same decision I did because like myself, you might regret it. I do have to say that my experience working there has really changed my mind about being a CNA and that's why I haven't returned to work yet. It's so hard to work with people who make you miserable and treat you like dirt! Good luck to you!
