Hello Nurses, I am an LVN, but have not worked since obtaining my license in 2015. I do have LOTS of clinical experience as I have been a Medical Assistant since 1990 and completed all but last semester of an RN program. My question.. I am thinking about school nursing, but not sure what ages (K-12) are best suited for my introduction back into the world of working. I have anxiety returning to work after such a long gap & rusty skills. ? Kids (and parents) who are less demanding are what I’m aiming for ? so- I am thinking HS, but I have no idea! Please share your thoughts, input, ideas. Schedules.. Much Appreciation. ??

SullyRN, I emphasize. Funny, my dad has no H.S. education but would berate me when I struggled through the RN program. I made it through RN school but just couldn't make those last 6wks I studied later on my own and now have my LVN. Life gives us challenges, our parents- of all people- should not shoot us down. I've 'divorced' my father. Life is tough enough.

I went through the RN program, completed everything but last 4 weeks. I got my LVN license but have not 'worked' as a nurse yet. (I did however, work as an RN extern and get paid during school.) I bring this up because my 6 yo Sons father tells me & my son "mommy is not a real nurse. She is an imposter." He has no idea the education & training I went through. Just because I don't work does not make me 'less.' So hurtful. Nothing a 6yo should hear about his mother anyway. (I got by, but struggled-school was really challenging for me.) I am not concerned with people wearing scrubs outside the workplace. These days you can't really tell what profession they are in- some may only be working front office. What DOES concern me: seeing Nurses outside the OR wearing booties and surgical caps. Especially in the hospital cafeteria by my food. Are they clean/dirty? Are you going to wear the same ones when you operate on a pt (now that you've worn them in public?) Either way, I imagine germs traveling from 'there to here'- and 'here to there.' The perception can be worrisome to others. Thank you for any clarification on how or why OR Nurses wear booties/caps outside the OR. This was not meant to direspect any nurses by no means.❤️

Thank u so much. I have an old Hurst-PN NCLEX review book published from 2008 with a 2005 test plan in place. I suppose the core and strategies may help? Where did you get your Hurst study guides? I have the PN mastery app, however, just the free version so far ( $30 for an app?, yikes) Thanks again :)

Thanks for all your great advice! I'm studying for Nclex-pn and sounds like I need to get l​a charity for sure. I've been out of school since 2007 and am worried about reviewing content material, can you recommend any books? Would you say the test is more about testing strategies and knowing how to answer questions? I am not sure where to begin my studies since I've been out of school so long. Hi Deevaa, I'm studying to pass the LVN NCLEX. I've been out of school 7 years now so any pointers will be greatly appreciated. I understand the test plan is different now, do you know what's so different? I plan on using my old nursing books to study from so I hope they will suffice? Thank you for sharing! I have been out of school since 2007 and am looking for study materials to pass Lvn Nclex. I checked a book out from library but it's on the old test plan. I am at home with my 3 year old so studying is rather tough. Thanks for your help and congrats! Nicola :)

Battleaxe, Did you test at Orange County ROP, because I did, and they were extremely nice and helpful. I happen to get "transfer with gait belt" as one of my skills and did just fine! If you're competent and not completely "clueless" then it shouldn't be a problem to pass. I liked NOROP and wouldn't have a problem recommending them.

I had a teacher do the same to me which caused me to leave the RN program- 4th semester. Such a same... He would yell at me in front of other RN's at the nurses stations, or fellow students- sometimes making me cry (instead of taking me to a private room to talk.) quiz me on material not yet covered in class, close the door in my face if I were walking behind him. Etc... and so on.... I stood up to him- think that was the problem. I finally told him to stop talking to me like he was my father!

I am in CA and take mine Saturday! I'm not concerned with the written but the skills portion does make me nervous.... especially since I'm challenging it and haven't practiced the actual skills in over 5years!!

I loved my Backpack on wheels... always felt if I left a book in the car- I'd need it! (Most of my nursing classmates had one as well.) I put everything in it- books, lunch, lab materials, etc.. I parked it at the back of the room if it was going to block an aisle. You can always get one and try; it's good to use when you have study sessions with friends and need all your goodies too :) Best of luck!

OrangePink89, I am so sorry to hear about your skills exam I have never seen a gait belt, let alone apply one, so I'll be nervous if I draw that skill! Thank you for taking the time to help us out!!

O my gosh, I am so sorry to hear about your dad- Is he ok? I was checking in to see where you'd been, haha. Will you be testing at ROP on the 21st with me then :)? If you'd like to get together to practice before the exam, maybe we can meet? ( I will give you my email if you like.) I still feel so unprepared, have you been practicing? I NEED 2! It's hard when I'm chasing a 19mo. old around all day. ( no excuse.) Talk to you soon; let me know if you need help studying

We probably we will testing the same day then- the 21st. I have no idea what to expect, whether they are strict, or how the skills are set up. I know the skills evaluators are LVN instructors though, so that is intimidating! I need to get practicing!! Good luck; maybe I will see you there.

Hello, I am testing in 3weeks in CA and would like to know the exact same thing! I have the same book but they do not go into detail about the supplies needed to perform the skills etc... just list steps 1,2,3... I am challenging the exam and haven't performed these skills in years as well. Youtube is not much help as everyone is doing something different. (not necessarily correct either!) I too, would like help! Also, if anyone has tested at ROP in CA, any feedback would be appreciated as well. Thank you

Thanks for replying! I am testing 7/21 at 7AM! I know for sure we are all tested on hand washing and one measurement; I'm just nervous about the others like bedpan, bedbath, peri/cath care! yikes!! Do you work in a hospital now as a CNA? I haven't practiced CNA skills in over 5 years!!

Thank you for your help! I'm worried about running out of time when performing the skills, will they fail you if that's the case? Also, are the 5 testing skills on an index card you draw?

I haven't taken mine yet, what did you fail on the dentures? Are all the skills written out in order on a card you draw? Not sure how it works.... I'm in Cali.

Yes, it is hard to remember the skills. I have 3 semesters of RN school, but that was 5 years ago. I can not remember basic nursing skills of bathing, bed pans, etc... but I know the more advanced stuff- that's why these skills make me nervous.
