  1. I'll finish this for you b/c I fit the category I/m a black male cna 18-25 living in West Virginia. First every CNA no matter what you are has politics to deal with in long term care. Never has there been instance where I received improper treatment from upper management(administrator and don) but like any CNA I got the new CNA treatment from some of the old staff (which is the unwritten code of the business). Patients have the right to be objective to who cares for them( a good CNA instructor explains that first off to you) and the second point as a caregiver you can not subject yourself to be in the perception of any entitlement to who you care for just give them the best care possible. Also the you have to watch for the hating CNA who sees everything you do ,but isn't doing their job and understand that as male some issues will be reported not to harm you but to make sure the patient isn't harmed. I've personally been suspended for an incident that I had no involvement in but the social worker explained the stats of male cna incidents to female cna incidents and I never looked at allegations in a bad way because the actual number of male incidents at the time were way lower and plus I know I do a good job. Your race and gender truly have nothing to do with the way you work or how hard you're job will be as cna. Just remember politics are a part of the health care field and the way you socialize dictates how you are perceived by your co workers.
  2. Similar experience with a co worker : it is just part of the politics of being a CNA. The resource you have is that if you know the chain of command ; you can either escalate the situation or you can do the less taken road and keep quiet and either find a new unit or go into long term care or another field within your scope. Remember the medical field carries a high school type stigma of role reversal and identity issues.
  3. I've worked PRN for the last two years and I make my schedule according to what I need and the facility's need . But I have never compromised my schedule so thats the perk of PRN the downside is at certain times of the year hours are scarce.
  4. in the future companies are going to have to stop this from happening to employees.all of my cna career until this last job i never know what bullying was until i got to my previous job.my situation is i'm a male cna and my demographic is 18-24 crowd so there are only 11 percent of us out there even working in long term care(ltc) so i guess you can call it a minority in its own . i didn't want to be a dominating figure at this now that being said i work mainly with women and the authority figures(rn and lpn) are in position i never would have thought of in my mind that they have controlling power over how i work . so @ the job i performed just like everyone else until a chance encounter w/ one of the "pretty"(her personal opinion of herself) nurses and she didn't do her job properly but i'm one of thos people who goes w/ the flow unless it compromises me or job requirements. so there where two of us working on the midnight shift :the facility i worked @ is about 120 beds and normally i work alone b/c the other cna doesn't do the same routine as me: so i took on the task of taking care of my half of the patients giving them ice and etc.. the other cna i can't quote on what they did ,but they sure didn't help me and i assisted them w/ the usual turns and etc i never mind that, but i never took a break and the two lpns and this cna took numerous breaks and i never questioned that cause like i said i go with the flow .so around five in the month i finally go take me lunch and the "pretty" lpn states "if you don't return to the floor and help the other cna : i"ll write you up." so me being me i seat back further in my seat and respond cause i know while on my lunch break it isn't anything insubordinate abut responding while off the clock so i tell her no and cite all the numerous time her and the other nurse stop off the floor and neither answered a call light that night or asked if we(cna) needed any help. so we got into an arguement i was wrong for that so she wrote me up . myself not knowing the lasting consequence of my encounter with her: the write up never went anywhere and was quickly disposed of by the don for reasons i don't know. so for a two months i noticed there was a trio to this "pretty" nurse group. i played my part by working in the other part of the building but once i was pulled to this side of the building one of the three nurse would watch me carefully trying to find something to write me up for on the first occasion of being pulled one of three wrote me up and instead of fighting i took the write up because i had no support behind me on the issues . comapny policy is to sign the write up but the disclaimer is it isn't admission of guilt thats a line of bull. so for another month or so i didn't get pulled then one saturday i got pulled and recieved another write up. now the rns who handled the write ups waited two weeks to give me the write up(for reasons i don't know) so this time i didn't sign it because the write was ths same write up before and i know it was one of the trio who cited me and this time they had no cause, but the nurses didn't want to hear my side so i went back to work and dwell on the issues but i decide to quit cause for once in my cna career and this is the second time of having an issue with the company i worked(i previous worked for them at another facility but i left). so i decide to investigate some more and my fiance left because of similiar issues and a male cna who fits into my demographic left the same facility so that finally convinced me that the problem wasn't me because i took the stance of following the company motto and policies. so then i questioned if i was meant for the field and i remember what my lpn instructor told me and it is if a house is not home when you get there then it isn't home nor is it a house : it is just a building . her next remark was that a nursing home is like a basketball team some are good , some are great , some are downright horrible. then i did some research and found the problem was natonwide : not doing my research i left the number one nursing facility chain for the number three based on 2005 results so know i realize the problem was really more than meets the eye.so if anyone ever has a similiar problem check who you work for if i had done this maybe i would have saved myself from incident. does that work for you?
  5. She wrote me up the first time for not returning to work area when prompted by supervisor: she tried to pull me from my lunch break when everyone else took theirs:and there was no apparent need for me on the floor. The second and three write ups were cited as being care issues. The problem w/ the situation was that I normally worked in the south portion of the building and never had any problems, but once I went to the north end and work under one of "three nurses" tried to find something wrong with the way I worked. The reason for the post is to make new CNA and people thinking about becoming CNA that this job is like any other job in the sense that people will try to compromise you if you don't fit int their scheme of things or go with their flow thats all.

  7. check what companies own the nursing homes and that gives you better job prespective because it will tell how many they have employed and check other web venues like monster or career builder and if you see the job on there be persistent w/ the hr departent @ the job you want. no one wants to give a job to someone who will not go out and pursue the job...
  8. A lot of the male cna s that i work with are prn like me to cause it seems the more hours you put @ one job the more they ask. I understand going above and beyond your duty , but outside of your scope of practice is absurd.thanx
  9. point being that as a male cna i'm asked to get them up cause i feel it was assumed that i would just put them over in a chair. i think your inference of my story is wrong: i know experience pointers..the point is in ltc nurses in some cases i believe that a male cna is just a lifting machine when we are supoose to use hoyers if they are not 1 person assist
  10. i went from part time to prn and in the dining room they have a set time to get everyone down there. @ this facility others like to disappear around dinner time. the nurse was just being a jerk i believe cause she had something against b/c for two hours she sat @ the desk and never said a word..
  11. I have a luxury most don't in that I work a prn schedule, but the cost of the schedule is that I lose contact w/ the patients(residents) I take care of f4rom time to time. Well here goes my story I work @ a great nursing home in west virginia here's the catch i ride a bus and it is 1.5 mile hike up a hill so back and forth 3 miles so i make the the trip only three times a week @ my choice sometimes less.Yesterday i was working the abnormal assignment: the building is sectioned off and i worked on the side i normally don't work on..So all the other cnas except for the one cna who got pulled w/ me were normal to their assignments. So I made two runs before dinner and b/c of hippa I can't get into full detail but two residents weren't gotten up by me because I didn't know they needed to get up. so while assigned to the dining room I called to get these two residents up and bring them down(normally I would keep me cool cause I know sometime people are busy and they couldn't get them up for me but it was only one other cna in the dining room so I was ticked b/c I had to leave them shorthanded).when i went back the hallway I asked the nurse nicely to see if she would send someone to the dining room to help the other cna she said no and proceed to say after you finish go back down the dining room.now in the back of my head i was thinking we don't have insufficient staff why couldn't she get one of them to put these two patients up and send them down to the dining room...then something hit me it was because I was a man...so i followed the attitude technique taught to me by my cna instructor and refocused my energy to the task at hand..after finishing the job she grew somewhat upset w/ me and told me to go to the dining room and I went then there was finally enough staff so I returned to the floor the lpn then commanded me to start feeding residents on the floor and we all know as cna you must clean any area that has been soiled so i did that instead of what she ordered because I knew it would be an issue of neglect then I proceed to do what she instructed i could see in her eyes she felt dissent from me, but I stuck to my thought and went on.I already posted the Attitude by Charles Swindoll thats the cool down technique i was referring to.
  12. i'm in charleston wv and they pay more for new cnas so i would guess you should hold out because the one thing i learned is there are lots of places willing to pay the higher salary if you take the heavy caseload of patients.
  13. encourage others to follow it and it makes the workplace a better place.
  14. My teacher give me a paper with this saying on it . No matter what position you are in : no matter where you are in the medical field if you remember this saying you will change your whole out look on how you work, treat people , and how you carry your self in the work place . Attitude by Charles Swindoll The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.
  15. There are bad qualities in some cna but based on experience I can tell you in the ltc setting where I'm a male cna alot is expected from you and the issue of being a lift is what probably gets you. Mainly in the nursing home you have to remember the 90/10 rule. It is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to situations. that should be all the answer you need.
