Help! Sinking at first job as LPN.
I would run out of there so fast it would make their head spin! I do NOT see how they keep any nurse at those numbers. You are not sinking.....you have been anchored down. They have sat you up for nothing but failure. Do not stay and let that situation beat up your confidence. Too many jobs out there for that! Good luck!

Do you say you're a nurse...

A nurse only 3 months and allready trouble?
If you were not a CNA prior to becoming a nurse believe me this is a different world than anything else you might have ever done. I had never worked in health care prior to becoming a nurse and it took me a while to be able to accept that there are people who will stab you in the back (even if THEY are in the wrong) if it comes to it. All of the nurses where I work were recently called into the DON's office largely for what the CNA's are doing/not doing on the weekends. I happen to work baylor During the week (while I had time to think about everything) after being chewed I decided to make some changes. I have stopped being SO friendly with them and stopped asking them to do things I need them to do. I am sure these are changes I should have made a long time ago....however I just thought since we were all adults we could do our jobs and get along. Apparently I was wrong. Try not to worry so much about your incident. It seems to me as if they are just "covering their bases". Anytime an investigation takes place they must speak with everyone even remotely involved! Good Luck! Kim

Bio 201 online?
Thanks! That is exactly what I was afraid of. I am not fond of trying to learn the bones. However, bio's are the only thing I am missing to go into the LPN-RN mobility program. Thanks again!

Bio 201 online?
Has anyone taken it? If so, how did you do? Would you suggest taking it online or on site?

The Elderly-What Do You See?
I love geriatrics..... even prior to being a nurse I always loved them! It is to bad that our society doesn't admire what they have contributed in their productive days. Instead we (as a whole) are so ready to shove them away as if they are nothing but useless burdens. Thanks for sharing the poem. It brought tears to my eyes to read it. One day we might all be there.

Should I quit?
Ohhh MY! It sounds like you are reliving my past! I had the same thing happen to me with my first nursing job. Mine was a little different (a new DON was brought in). Another LPN (who would have jumped off a building for her) ran to her for every little blank on my MAR that I didn't sign. One Thursday I was given two different "write- up's" for things that occurred/didn't occur on my OFF DAYS! As in skin audits, etc.... Anyway I had an honest to goodness medication omission the next day. My nerves were a wreck because they had been riding me for months and I knew they were out to get me. If I were you I would resign and beat them to the punch. That was the first job I had ever been terminated from and it kills me to have to explain it to prospective employers. On a lighter note, you do have your license, you are in demand. They cannot take that away from you. If they are making you feel bad and trying to ambush you do not give them that chance!!!!! You can get another job tomorrow! Sorry I got a little long winded, but my heart goes out to you!

Please pray for my situation..
Yes, it is termed "Employee at will". Any employer has the ability to terminate employment for no reason.....however, you cannot terminate someone by applying rules to them that you have not applied to other employees in an equal capacity. So, what will be will be. I enjoy nursing, but God is going to provide a pathway for my bakery soon. :)

Please pray for my situation..
A little background on the situation: The DON has not liked me from the begining (less than a year ago when she got there). She befriended a fellow LPN who is a back stabber and tells her anything and everything that goes on. She also GAVE her a small Yorkie (dog that sells for approx. $1000) as a "gift". That is a very small example of their friendship. On Thursday, I was called in the DON's office and written up twice. One "write up" was for Skin Audits & Treatments. First write up: Skin Audits not done weekly as required. Treatments not done over the weekend. It has always been our policy that "whoever is working a particular hall on the day that skin audits are due will do the skin audits". The truth: I was not there working on the dates that they were not done.....she wrote me up anyway and said it didn't matter that I wasn't there. About the treatments....I told her that not only did I have another nurse that could be a witness that I had done my tx's, but a MD who came in to see a pt could verify that I had done them (he watched me). She did scratch that one out. Second write up: Partial ampule of demoral found on cart. There was documentation where I signed out the demoral with pt name. My mistake was not filling out a sheet of paper on it. Thursday evening on the 2nd shifts first med round (3:30pm) she found a dose of meds that I failed to administer in a pt's room and took it to the supervisors office. On Friday (after I worked my full shift) I was written up for failure to administer the meds. MY fault....I walked in and the CNA was giving a bath, fully intending to return and administer the med, I forgot. Completely my fault. What I do not understand is that when she terminated me she could not tell me the policy and procedure for what I was being terminated for. When I requested the information, my immediate supervisor started looking for it and the DON's response to her was, "Don't worry about it. It doesn't matter anyway." I was very calm, cool, and collected, but I did remind her there were much worse medical errors by nurses that were not terminated who still worked at the facility (all of which were made between two LPNs). I told her that I did not understand why a different set of rules applied to me. When I named the incidents and the people (all of which are documented) I asked her how they still had a job and I did not. She had no response. I have received an influx of phone calls from my co-workers (and even people I worked with previously) telling me how "wrong" she was for firing me and telling me to "fight it". Although I know I was delt a raw deal; I am praying that God show me the path in which to follow. I have always wanted to own my on bakery, so this might me my chance. Please pray for my family and I in this time. I know there is a purpose for all this, and I am very anxious to find it out. Thank you, Kim

LTC nurse needs some opinions
I also work in LTC (have since I graduated in 2004). Personally I think you went way overboard. At the facility I work at we consider that "looking out for each other". Of course the next time we see each other we do alert the other person to the situation, and that way he/she can draw a line through what is there and put his/her own initials. In the mean time if the facility you work at is strict about your initials being on there....for all purposes, they would have been. Actually if it had been one of my co-workers I would have been shocked that they did not put my initials (especially since it is only a communication sheet). I have learned in this field that as nurses we should stick together. Running to the one in charge is not always the answer. If the shoe was on the other foot and you had done something with good intentions imagine how this would make you feel. Just my opinion... Kim

Decatur, Arab, Boaz Albertville
Those are all very small (country) little places. Sand Mountian (that is what the location of the last three has always been called) is a cluster of farming communities. I personally would not visit the only hospital that I know of there. I live in Gadsden, which is not as small as those places. We do have two hospitals and more options as far as job opportunities. Good luck in your search! By the way...just to give you an example; During my last few weeks of LPN classes we were given an assignment to go to various employers and get their rate of pay and various other benefit info. The one hospital (Marshall Medical) started LPN's off at a big $10/hour!!! :angryfire Kim

"Your servers today will be..." Opinions please!
And they actually think anyone has time for this???? Maybe they need a line that says "Your Matradee today is_______" and list the DON's name. My spelling is probably incorrect, but you get the idea. I would be furious. I was a waitress for 8 years prior to nursing school, and I loved my job. However, healthcare workers are NOT servers. Your feelings are hurt, I am sure. You should sit down with the DON and explain how demeaning and belittleing this is. Kim
