  1. Dr. Chris Maholy teaches bio 186 I really liked him... Mr. Stemple for Chemistry if you need it... they used to have Mrs. Larson for Micro but.. she left to KCC ... um I didnt have a lot of pre classes before I applied to SSC.. ony because I had an assoc. degree prior so a lot of classes filtered in... just remember there are good and bad and if you get a bad one, just read your book and when they ramble on and on about stupid stuff that dont apply to the class at hand, I ignor them and try to pick out what is important. I do know school is what you put into it. nursing teacher to avoid, I dont really want to say.. only cause im still there.. and well I dont bite the hand that holds my degree... if you know what I mean.. when I graduate.. I def spill my guts!!!
  2. Second semester was a kicker... congrats for you on passing first semester.... I remember sitting in 112.. the final in front of me.. and just crying.. I needed a 86 to pass the class.. all down to one test to decide my fate.. I pasted with a 92 but still the stress is outragous. 3rd semster is no different, with the exception of ob.. Im stoked for OB.. Ped's Ill be crying the entire 4 weeks.. 8 days of hell. me children and illnesses dont mix and I have a half dozen kids!... but good luck, you sound like you are very very well adjusted to life at SSC.. good luck Latinadream
  3. how we do it. is we take what the doc ordered and write it first.. say 2g of drug1 but we have 200 mg tablets, how many pills will they need. im going to need a conversion. 1000 mg = 1 g between the dose ordered and the dose on hand. so I put down 2g * 1000 mg/1g * 1tab/200mg the math then would be 2g * 1000mg *1 tab /1g /200mg = you would give 10 tablets. and if you need more help..check out the website below.. my school gave it to us to use to study.. there is a section for medication there http://www.learningnurse.com/content/view/25/39/
  4. so.. is nursing school everything we said it would be??? HOw are you holding up? I know you are not in clinicals yet, but you will be soon... dont forget to study study study!
  5. I just took my math test, got a 90% passed.. OH thank god... it was my second time.. taking it... we get 3 tries then we are out..
  6. I dont know who that is, study groups are good, just make sure that the group you are studing with are do'ers not takers, you will find that some students will jump on the band waggon, before a test or will ask you for a copy of your study guide(if the teacher gives one) because they were too busy with their life to study, its good to give, but you should get in return equal to what you give out. you will spot them a mile away.. also try to avoid the complainers, the school is what it is learn what you need too pass your exams and get out. Life isnt fair, school can seem unfair, OH and number one thing, SIT UP FRONT!!!!! this limits your distractions to only whats going on the side of you... I get to class first day 30 minutes before the doors open sometimes even earlier.. and i run for the front. This works for me because im easily distracted. :)
  7. No D. Black doesnt she taught 218 which is 4th semester, im in my 3rd semester and hate summer break, I feel like everything I learned is slipping away, so im trying to keep reading and watch videos, most my classes are on line this semester and the one class I have is at the oakforest facility, so unless they have a sim lab for us I wont be at the main building. IF you need any help just hollar. And ask questions, sometime teachers wont elaborate on things, if you dont under stand ask, sometimes they will answer you and sometimes there wont be any time in class but will make time for you in office hours.. use those office hours its why they are there. also use the lab facility too, practice everything. pick people brains... is how you learn everythign you will need to know, make friends with people a semster ahead of you as well, they may have notes and good advice that may save you hours of painful studying.
  8. congratulation!!!!!! im very happy for you!!!! Yes I didnt have her as a teacher persay... but she was my 105 lab instructor, and she was really calm and just explained things so well. There are several really good teachers and a few who. lets say avoid like the plague. one Teacher with the initials PK... she is in my opinion, very hard follow, and some really struggle in her class but then again.. your first year is hard and you have to learn so much in so little time, some days you feel like your head wil explode. I loved my 105 teacher initials MS she was hard but she was fair and very very very helpful. I still talk with her, and ask her for help when I get stuck and would direct me to pages in my fundamental book to help me see things more clearly... Good luck, buckle up you are on a ride of a life time :) and thanks for the nice complement
  9. I got an associate degree back in 2000 and my humanities and speach and math class transfered over, I had to take chemistry, because I didnt have one in highschool and I had to take 211 psych because I only had one from my previous college. then I had to take bio 185. because I already had one biology prior. Like I said get all your transcripts in to the school of all classes you took and see what you need. I just have a friend who is taking for ever to bridge over, yes she is already working, but it seems like such a pain trying to bridge. I am happy im doing the adn program, and I will be taking my nclex this time next year. then its off for my bsn then my Masters.. looks like school never ends
  10. HI Are you sure you want to go for the LPN Program? yes you get working after only one year of school but... my friend who is an LPN is doing the bridging program it is taking her longer then it is taking me to become an RN. Also, it will be hard for you to get into hospitals to work, I keep hearing it will be hard for Assoc. RNs and that they want BSNs instead... I understand that some just wanna get out there and work right away. as for the prereq's http://ssc.edu/pdf/catalog/11-12_catalog.pdf this is the link to their catalog, it will tell you what you need. also call now and get an appointment with a Nursing counselor they will tell you everything you need to get started and help you work up a plan of action.. Good Luck!
  11. Congratulations JJBRN Im entering in my second year and I totally agree, say good bye to your family and friends, TV and Phone, and any internet programs you may like. I am still going over last semesters readings and next semesters readings to get a jump on it, Here is a big word of advice, do the best you on your tests... its very overwhelming when you have to get a high score on your finals to pass the class, I even cried when I was handed my final because I was so stressed, I got a 92 but still the stress almost made me want to quit... Good luck kuffy
  12. HI, Mamahere are you going for the LPN Program or the ADN Program? Here is some advice, if you are going for the LPN Program, you will end up taking more classes then I had to when you go for your bridging, My friend who is already an LPN she is bridging and she wont finish till a semester after me making her go even longer, she had to take bio 186 then she micro, then in the program she goes another whole semester. And if you are in the ADN program make sure all your prereq's are done, nursing school is hard enough without taking extra filler classes like speach or humanities and the micro and 186 are hard enough on their own. Kuffy
  13. well its 100 per credit hour and for all the books it was around 800 dollars, but you use these books over, there are books you have to buy each semester some are used more then one semester some are not, but all are good reference, then if you get financial aid, you can get a voucher to help pay for the uniform for clinicals, that was about a 50 dollar voucher if the funds are available, then I think I paid about 90 bucks for the rest of the uniform with supplies.
  14. when you get accepted, all the information you need will be in there, you have have a back ground check you have to pay for, its like 70 bucks and you have to pay for the entrance exam, like 35 I think.. its the Hesi a2 exam I took, there is a book for it, helped me in the math department, good luck I just made it to 3rd semester and just took the midcurriculum exam.. and Passed!
  15. Im curious, how did your 3rd semester turn out? you should be just finishing your 4th semester? im currently finishing 2nd semester and had some very interesting things go on in my own school.. Ill mention them when I get my degree.. no need to nibble on the fingers that hold that diploma :)
  16. The Program is fine, I am just finishing up my 2nd semester, I wont say its easy, but its not impossible, the program is sometimes conflicting, and some times you dont get the best teacher, but if you put forth an honest effort and read the material and study.. then read some more and study some more, any program you will find people who are happy and people who are not. School is as always what you make of it. I have no life, I spend all my time in a book, but I look at it this way, these 2 years im giving up will bring me a life long dream of being a nurse and the money to enjoy the things I want to do. Good luck! if you are applying in the spring of 2012 I will be in 4th semester and looking toward graduation. Why are you applying so far away.. are you still taking pre-reqs?
  17. Expect long nights of studying, reading, studying and reading some more! I have probably seen you there! I am in the second semester now, so far how is it going? Who are your teachers? have you started clinicals yet?
  18. I was accepted into the fall 2010 adn class. I had great teachers, loved them all, I will say, I found it hard and had to work my butt off for 2 B's and one C, but I passed and get to go on,30-50% didnt pass, I had Mrs. Larson for micro.. she was great.. animated teacher, made it awesomely fun, and I had Dr. Chris for bio 186 he too was great.. they teach at night.. so.. if you can, take them. good luck
  19. Yes, asking for money from your parent is hard, im 44 and im in nursing school, and I still ask my parents for help, find the courage inside and just ask! Bring your tuition bill over to their house and sit down as say I dont know how im gonna pay for all this.. look how expensive it is.. and see if they offer to help.. if not then ask! Did you apply for Financial aid?
  20. OMG.... for that kind of money they should rub your shoulders and carry you to class, You are probably going for a bachelor's degree. I think my total cost for the ADN program is roughly 8,000
  21. I paid 854 bucks for my books at the school book store.. thank god for financial aid or Nursing school would still just be a dream... Also its awesome that a lot of these books are used throughout the Nursing program
  22. exactly!!!! Thats what im saying too.. when you know you have tried your best and put forth a honest effort you should be proud of it, but not putting forth an effort then acting like things are so unfair, all I have to say to that is you got what you deserved.
  23. I hope you reach your goals, Having a plan is half the battle! I think when we talk about the people with low grades we are talking about the people who think "thats good enough" People who work and did their best are not who we are complaining about. I get A's and B's and if by chance I get C's I can live with it, if I truly did my very best and didnt just settle for that grade to make my life easier.
  24. Just a small rant, I get good grades, I study hard, I pay attention in class and I have never missed a class since I started school. Now this fall I start nursing classes, and I pray to god that I dont have to deal with students who whine about being in class, I payed for 4 credit hours I expect 4 credit hours of learning. Those students who whine about having to stay for the whole class or ask to get out early, make me wonder what kind of Nurses will they be, will they try to leave work early, will they come in late for their shift... Then to top the whole whining thing off they then have the nerve to complain that their grades suck, oh boo hoo because they didnt pass the test... Well DUH I wonder why, So I say to God Please let my class mates be as diligent as I want to be so we have very productive classes.
  25. I thought about this long and hard, and I dont really want to do the ER, I will if I have to, and I probably would do great in Labor and Delivery, since I have 8 kids, but where I really want to work is Geriatrics, I want to give them the quality care they deserve, I love hearing their stories of the way it was when they were young, or surgery would be just as awesome!
