Job offer to help with JCAHO prep- new grad...help!
The Joint Commission Standards are fairly easy to understand and you will probably be looking at compliance with those. Although, it is impossible to know what the surveyors will focus on, this would be a great learning experience/stepping stone. I figure you will get a "big picture" of hospital administrative processes-committee functions, policy/procedure modification and development. Great resume builder! Good luck in whatever you choose!

Who's your daddy? NI Supervision?
Day 3 of new Clinical Informaticist position (new to me and new to hospital). Am in technology department at hospital that is implementing EHR, automated pharmacy and work force management. Curious, as to where you other nurse informaticists fit in at your hospitals. Do you report to Chief Nursing Officer or Technology people? Pros and Cons, what do you feel is more efficient in terms of smooth implementation processes, being the best asset to organization.

Pyxis as the problem? You decide.
Elkpark- This is an old thread, but am hoping you will take a look at this. Our current hospital med administration is similar to yours. One nurse passing meds to 25-30 mostly unstable, paranoid psyc patients. We are going to EMAR and considering pyxis, omnicell and some other automated dispensing systems. I am having trouble wrapping my head around the new process with these in place. Does your med nurse belly up to the pyxis/omnicell pull each pts meds individually as they come to the med window then document in EMAR or pull all pts meds at once putting them in another cart (obviously labeled with identifying info)?? Then as patients come up taking meds from this "other" cart checking meds again and documenting given on EMAR. I hope these questions make sense. Anyone else who has some input let me know. We are rolling out our new EHR this fall and as far as I can tell there is not linkability (is that a word-well it should be) with the EHR and scanning or automated dispensing maching--so looks as though pulling meds and documenting in EMAR will be separate systems-actions. Thanks

MR/DD Group Home RN
Please, could someone give me a description of what a MR/DD group home RN would do in a day?? Considering applying, but job description isn't as detailed as I would like. I want the specifics, see if I would be a good fit. THANKS!

Thanks for the link! I have a question for you. I am currently QI RN at a large institution who is moving to EHR (go live June). I, also, have a BA in Geographic Information systems. I am going to apply for a new position at our hospital-clinical informaticist and I am wondering, in your opinion, how much technical experience they will be looking for. I am competent around a computer and feel that I have a good knowledge base. I am just hoping they don't want someone who can sit down and program or build databases. Thanks!

Consideration for performance improvement position
Hi, I went from CNA to Mental Health RN to Quality Assurance RN in the Quality Improvement Department at the same hospital. In my opinion, performance improvement is pretty easy to pick up on. Having your experience will be really helpful for the job. I took a look at CPHQ website for some intro resources- can't remember specifics and have been recently learning about LEAN techniques and management. There is also knowing TJC and CMS standards. My position wouldn't allow for telecommuting because I am also on several committees and the sad fact that are still in the process of implementing a EHR. Hope this helps with! Performance Improvement is a very different perspective of healthcare, and you will be learning a lot. Good Luck!

Psyc nurse to Med/Surg....How?!

MHT vs. Mental Health CNA
Where I work in Oregon our mental health techs have to be CNAs because often the ydo everything a CNA does, bathe pts, take VS, help with ADLs. I think it differs with every facility.

Psyc nurse to Med/Surg....How?!
Right now they have a program for current employees who have all prerequisites completed. From this point they are go through an application process and the employer selects about 6 people for an 18 month accelerated Associates RN. This is through OHCC in Oregon and Portland Community College, you will find more info at OHCC.org and I am in the N2K nursing program. hope that helps.

Strangest thing you've heard a co-worker or patient say?
This came from a schizophrenic patient in a state hospital. I will never forget him.

What Oregon towns/cities do you recommend working in and why?
I have to say I love Portland. It is big, but it really has a small town feel. Any of the cities in the Willamette Valley are close to forest and mountains. Eugene is also very laid back nice area.
