Yes it does happen. A lot.

RN assigned as a CNA
My facility allows us to pick up shifts if aides are needed. However, they've been known to pull our PRN employees to the floor as STNAs, RNs and LPNs both. Personally, I wouldn't accept an assignment with report given the way you explained. That's a bit much.

Son wants to be a CRNA, but wants his ears guaged
Gauges can be removed and the holes will close up eventually (if gauged properly and not gauged too outrageously). Have him head over to the school he's applying to and get a copy of their dress codes for clinical situations. I wouldn't worry, small gauges aren't going to effect his grades or clinical performance if he's a good student.

Had something interest happen this past weekend
Oh the what ifs here are maddening! What if you hadn't insisted he go? Kudos for taking a stand.

Things you would LOVE to say to your nursing instructors...
We really want to be your BFFs, even though you want nothing to do with us!! My clinical group was blessed with an amazing instructor, and she's quite the character!!

Typical day in the life?
be prepared for migraines and anxiety!! it's rewarding, but it's harder than anything i've ever done in my life. study, study, and more study. oh, and no personal life whatsoever. get used to that now! good luck!

Do you study from your text books ?
My instructor uses slides as well, and the readings are mandatory. Our exams are based on content from both areas, so we could never get away with skimming. Right now, we're refrencing from two texts for the content, but it is still a time consuming amount of text.

Very upset.
Remember to focus on why you're in school now, and why you're willing to put up with all this. You will be successful, whether they like it or not! I'm not sure what your class coordinator is, (student representative?), but they should have made a stand when the Instructor refused to. You might want to consider going to the head of the department if you are uncomfortable with your Instructor now, but don't miss class over it. It will only hurt your hard-earned A!!!! I'm sorry this happened to you, but I'm sure someday it will make you a better nurse because it did.

I definatly don't wear my shoes around the house, I change before I leave the hospital. Clinical germs at home/in my car? No thanks!
