NVCC has a spanish for healthcare workers class, it's an online class. I think they have it in class as well. I took it, it was a bit tough but very useful. It would probably be easier for you since you have taken spanish before. I hadn't so that's probably why it was hard for me.

I'm not in the program but know some who are in both programs. The programs are challenging but you don't have to be an "A" student to do well. All depends on your study habits and determination to do well. The momentum program is an accelerated program, one year for basic pre-reqs and co-reqs, one year for nursing classes and co-reqs and then one year at Mason. So it's not a walk in the park. From what I've heard the summer semester is the most challenging. Because instead of having 16 weeks to complete it you have 12 weeks. I have no clue on acceptance rate, it's not something that is published like many colleges and universities do. Tutition for this semster is 112.45 per credit. For each semester of both programs you average about 14 credits per semester. Can be less if you go for the traditional program and do the co-reqs before hand. So about $1500.00 a semester plus books. This area is expensive to live in. There are good and bad areas... the further south you go from DC the rent gets cheaper. I have no clue what rent is like these days....but I live in Woodbridge and it's one of the cheaper areas to live in for this area. But with that means more time on the interstate, to get to where you want to go. This area is known for it's horrible traffic.

Hi All! I'm planning on apply next fall, and had a question about the pre-reqs. I can't get to an information session, with my class schedule. I'm starting them this fall and the way I have to take them I won't be done until the summer. But in the brochure it says they have to be completed by spring in time for fall. How strict are they on this policy? Has anyone been allowed to finish a pre-req over the summer?

For NVCC's nursing program you take NAS 161/162. I'm apply to different ABSN programs and they won't all take the NAS 161/162.

For those that have taken BIO 205.....I'm a bit confused about the pre-reqs. The counselors at my campus have given me different answers. The catalog states that one needs a year of biology and chemistry. Would... BIO 141 and 142 and CHM 111 and 112 fulfill that requirement? Or can I just take one section of BIO and CHM? Thanks!

The accelerated program starts in May and the traditional in August. Chem 101 is a pre-req if you didn't take it in high school. Here is the site with the pre-req form and the information.

Which chemistry did you take? I signed up for 121 this fall but don't know if I should take the 111.

Where you expecting it to be denied? Seems like if you had your ducks in a row all they could do is approve it. Good luck.

I think since you'll have clinicals that having a car would be a better option. Metro and Metro buses aren't always on time. I'm not sure where the clinical sites are for MU, but Northern VA isn't as easily accessible with public transportation as DC. There are a lot of ppl that do head from the lower parts of Northen VA into the Alexandria, Arlington, DC area so if you have a early morning clinical then you have to contend with all those people and have to plan accordingly. Which could mean a 4 am wake up...

Housing is pricey in Northern Va, esp. if you're renting. Traffic is horrible. Public transportation is pretty good. Anything specific you want to know?

Maybe try various doctors office or Kaiser Permanente, there are a bunch of offices near Potomac Hospital and Kaiser is right up the street from there as well. The Potomac News is the local paper here, as well as Washington Post. Check those for openings, the jobs are posted online.

The accelerated program at Mason is working towards a BSN. I'm not sure the amount of time that can pass, most schools it's 5-10 years. You should sign up for an information session at GMU and I'm sure you'll find out all you need to know and get your transcript evaluated so you know what pre-reqs you need. I'm apply for the Fall 2010, and have yet to go to the information session. The times haven't worked. Also Marymount, and Howard have accelerated BSN programs. MU has Fall and Spring admissions, so that's an option for you as well. But thier program is a lot more than Mason.

1. I'm pretty sure NOVA/NVCC has higher NCLEX pass rate than GMU. I'm sure someone can link the VABON site or it's on the top of this forum. What is your ultimate goal? Do you want to just be an RN? or do you think down the line you would want to be a NP or many other higher up nursing positions that require a BSN or MSN. Some schools require that you have a BSN to get your MSN, so research and think a little further down the line. I have one son and I know I'll have more kids down the line but I want to get my studies done asap so I can focus on my career and taking care of my kids. That was another factor I considered when choosing which program to apply to. 2. NVCC is cheaper as it's about $96 per credit, I don't know GMU but I'm sure it's at least $300 per credit. 3. Yes there is a lot of competition, Nursing is the new "hot" career. Since the media has said over and over that there will be a shortage of nurses, everybody wants to get into school and become a nurse. But as long as you apply yourself then go for it, don't let your past performance determine your future. 4. NVCC has a CNA program , I don't know of any others. I'm sure someone else can help you with that.

NVCC or NOVA has a great nursing program, the NCLEX pass rates are the best in the area. The campus is nice and everybody there is really focused on their studies. As for the job market I have no idea...some of the hospitals, depending on the floor have a hiring freeze in effect. I would suggest sending your transcript in to be evaluated so that you know what you have to take. The registration for Fall 2009 classes is in June.

Wow the dept. changed thier minds again. Not a shocker, they seem to do it every other month or so. You sure seem to know when they make changes as soon as they happen. You must live up there! Must be nice.

This program is for students who have no prior college credit and are attending college for the first time. -From program brochure (link)

Last year they let everyone in, that applied and had the appropriate HESI score. They changed it for this year.

1. The momentum program is for kids straight out of high school or for those who have no college credit. So since you already have taken classes at NVCC then you're not eligible. 2. The check list is to be turned in once you complete everything on it, kind of like a grocery list. You make the list and check off things once you're done. 3. See answer to question #1. 4. You can take NAS 162, and any other pre-reqs/ TEAS and then apply for the accelerated program next spring (March 2010, starts in May 2010) or traditional next fall (May 2010).

To add on to what Rhone said....pre-reqs take at least a year or more, depending on the program. So with NVCC it's a year of pre-reqs and then a year of mainly nursing classes with a few support classes. Those can be taken prior to entering the nursing program, which is reccomended. Are you looking to go to school in NoVA or MD, or does it matter?

NVCC (Northern Virginia Community College) has an accelerated ADN program. Starts in May of each year, there is an online and in-person option. Here is the link to the programs they offer. You can go the BSN route and apply for scholarships from the various hospitals. Some only pay for an ADN but I know INOVA pays for BSN. I'm a second degree student also and taking my pre-reqs at NVCC and applying to NVCC, GMU and MU next fall or spring.

I'm not in the program, but took NAS 161 with Momentum students. Some liked it but most hated the fact that they couldn't pick their schedule. If you had to work, or know that the professor wasn't all that great, or the time just didn't work. You just had to deal with it. If you didn't like it, then they basically showed you the door. Again this is from what I've heard, I'm sure some others will put in their 2 cents Like Future said, you can do the Accelerated or traditional and then transfer over to Mason yourself. So either way Momentum, or accelerated is 3 years towards a BSN (including pre-reqs for Accelerated) and if you go for the traditional it's 4 years. .
