Hey all! I am going to be graduating December '09 and I was wondering how early I should start my job search. I know a lot of people are having trouble finding jobs in my area. If you guys have any suggestions on when to start, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

I used to work at Applebee's my first couple years of college. I made pretty good tips. I hear Logan's is a good place to work as well. I also worked every shift. Day-time, nights, weekends. If you know what you're doing, none of them are really that bad. It does take some time to get the experience for them to give you more tables. The more customers you have, the more money you will make. Good luck!

In Alabama we have had some cut backs as well. I know of one hospital that has instituted a hiring freeze and is also cutting jobs. The jobs that are being cut are not in patient care areas though. What I heard was the "paper pushers" are the ones at risk of losing their jobs. From what I understand it's not a matter of having a low census, but more the fact that the hospital has been in financial trouble for a while, but keeps spending money. Also another hospital closed down recently, but I believe that was due to the fact they had very few patients throughout the hospital.

There is no set number of points to have. It varies each semester and depends on how many people apply and how many of those people have higher points. The cut off is never a set number. What they do is they accept a certain number of people and once that number is filled determines what the "cut off" points were. So you could have a semester that a lot of people had points in the 190s and the lowest they took was in the upper 180s. Then you could have a semester where the people had lower points. It just depends on how many students they can take. If they decided to make it where "if you have 185 points then you're safe" then they would probably have way too many students per class. They had to look at how many instructors and clinical facilities they have as well. Good luck to all applying!

When I applied for Fall 2007 I was told we would get our letters around the first couple weeks in July. Waited and waited. It took forever to get it because they were having some trouble deciding who to let in or something. But in the end the advisor ended up having to call all of the people accepted so that we knew in time to go to orientation. It seems like it's taking them longer and longer to let people know. If you haven't done so already, you may want to call the advisor and ask about the status of the decisions or when you can expect to hear something. Good Luck!

Has finding a job for a new grad been a problem for a long time, or is it just an issue at present? I will be graduating *hopefully* December 2009 and possibly moving because my boyfriend will be stationed there. I know no one can really comment on what things will be like in over a year, but if it is a long standing issue, then it may not be resolved by then. Thanks!

If you do fail the exit ERI and it's your first failure in nursing, do you then have to retake the last semester? Or do you have to start over from the beginning. I've heard something about people having to start over from the beginning (first semester - fifth semester) if they fail the last semester, but I just think that sounds a little crazy.

Well, my first semester we took the calculations ERI and we got our results in a few days (they did it paper and pencil - not online). Then when they were going to schedule the people who needed to retake it, they came and said that they weren't going to do the math calculations ERI anymore with first semester, so it didn't matter if we passed or failed. So I thought that meant they were doing away with the ERI for first semester. But then I heard people talking about it again. I didn't ask though. I was thinking if they had changed the policy we would have gotten some sort of notification, but I wasn't in a nursing course over the summer. I had to take the remediation for my 'withdrawal' from a nursing class. I always feel so left out in the dark with what's going on. And I always hear things that I have no idea how people get their information. Which most of the time it is untrue, but I don't see how they make some of this stuff up.

That's at Jeff State? When was the policy changed? I'm actually 2nd semester. Taking peds to be exact. I failed the nutrition in the spring, which when I took the practice test I scored way above the average and then I failed the real one twice. I have passed all other ERI tests on the first try. Most people from my class said that the way they passed nutrition was sheer luck. If the 5 points thing is true, I am so very happy to hear that! Thanks for your reply.

Does anyone who is already in the nursing program at Jeff State have any study tips as far as for the ERI? I don't have trouble studying for lecture exams, but the ERI is what caused me to fail one of my classes last semester. Since it counts as 1 attempt, I am just nervous now about failing again and being out of the program for 2 years.

If you know what the first unit you are covering you could read over that chapter in the book. Our school also has math tests the first day of each semester, even the first semester, so a lot of people study the math. It is a lot of information to just read all of your books, but you could just scan through your books. Reviewing anatomy wouldn't be a bad idea. It's tough to know exactly what to look over, though. Oh, you are completely right. I was asking my mom about this because she has worked in a pharmacy for 20+ years and when I read her the question and told her the choices her reply was "codeine with Tylenol!" She said that's how it is usually prescribed.
