Hi Cali, It think itdepends on the setting. (Hospital or Insurance companies ) I can tell you that I recently accepted a Case manager Job at the hospital I worked as a staff nurse , and she pretty much asked me what I knew about case management. Fortunately for me, my hospital offers free CEU's to the staff via CE Direct, and I read the case management courses on there and the case study examples. It was very helpful. The Director of case management also gave me some scenarios to see how I would answer them. I think the interview was not too bad because I was already working in the facility and my manager gave me really good reviews. The very best!!

I recently interviewed for two case management positions and got two job offers. I have no experience in Case Management but I am an experienced clinical and charge RN. One offer was with my current organization and they hired me for a part time position- 2 days a week. I will work on the floor for 2 days and hopefully if a full time position opens up..I can transition to full time. The full time nurses tell me that training is for 4-5 weeks and then they handle case loads on thier own. This was the first job offer I got and they needed me to start training immediately.... No weekends but I have to work 2 holidays Training is a little bit confusing because I am only there two days a week, and I just started three weeks ago.....and the length of my training has been fuzzy.... I just received the 2nd offer at another hospital. This will be full time and the training will be about 12 weeks. Both hospitals have similar hrs and benefits. I really like the 2nd facility because of its reputation and the extensive training I will receive but I am torn about leaving a facility that I am familair with ..I am also concerned about the time for the training....No holidays but I have to work one saturday every 6 months. For Hospital Case Managers out there...how long was your training when you first started? What facility should I go with? Pls help!! Thank you

For the nurses who leave the ICU...what areas do u go into.. Most nurses I know go to the PACU. Any other areas?

I say stay at the hospital for a year...it looks good on ur resume for the future, but if u truly hate it ..then leave

Dont give up....Dont limit yourself to the hospital..try nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other places. Hand deliver ur resume to the nurse recruiter after submitting online. Let someone review ur resume.. I believe persistence works. Call after u have turned in ur resume.It worked for me when i graduated years ago........ You already know why u werent hired at that place cos of the incident so u shouldnt have been that surprised....but there are other places..dont give up and be proactive....

Id love to say Yes! Ive always loved to be a nurse..but that would be a fat lie. No!! I never wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to be a journalist and i was working on it but nursing just fell into my life and my family encouraged it ( I am appreciative of that) for the steady income. So here I am... I still dont love it but it pays the bill ( and to those who love Nursing..good for you..ill never discourage u from being a nurse). Im still soul searching and ill find my true path soon....:redbeathe

Im still trying to trying to see how it could be child abuse ...but nothing is coming up. Like someone mentioned..its a marital issue and they need to work on themselves..so far u did not notice any form of child neglect or abuse ..either reported or observed and all ur information is from a third party. I think u definately over stepped your role as a nurse. The lines are blurred now between professional nurse and best buddy friend. I would look for another case to work on and slowly sever my ties before things get too complicated...

I would have notified the supervisor and filled an incident report. Then leave it to management to do what they need to do. I personally would not have called the family member myself..but that is just me..

People talk about how nursing is so diverse and u can always switch specialty areas ..e.g ED to ICU, Tele to L&D..etc or changed hospitals completely. I just wonder how often people actually do that and what impact it has had in looking for other opportunities? So my question is how many jobs have u had since u became an RN or LPN? Ive been a Nurse for about 5 years and have had three jobs..all different settings and all different specialty areas.

Hugss ...Just be patient..Its the economy ..but things willl start picking up soon..Keep applying and dont be too picky.. sometimes its better to actually go in person to drop off your resume as soon as u apply for the job online..dont give up!!!

That is concerning for someone who has been an ICU nurse for a year. Some of the things u mentioned are just basic knowledge any nurse should know. I think you both need to have a long discussion and I guess if things dont start changing soon..then the manager needs to know what is going on. Patient safety is important.

Its going to be hard to get a good and fair response because u are asking a bunch of people in the nursing field ( Who know a whole lot more about nursing than dentistry) to choose betweeen dentistry or nursing ( A field that they are familiar with).

I agree with the last post..widening ur horizons is a good way to put it.

People switch from different specialties all the time.. I moved from ED to ICU. You are moving from a high acuity environment to a lesser one. That does not mean that telemetry does not have its challenges. I know of some nurses in the ICU that when they pulled to the telemetry floor..they struggle because they are used having only two patients. Like the first person stated..u just want to be faced with a different kind of challenge . Lots of nurses have swtiched from the ICU or ED to a different specialty on the site. Hopefully they will be able to provide u with more information. The very best.

Its okay to love your job.. an its also okay to not like your job..You second career Nurses..if u loved ur first job soo much...why are u switching to Nursing???? All nurses is a forum that allows people to be real and to be able to voice out their feelings..or vent or share wonderful stories about being a nurse..its better than being pretentious that everything is wonderful, thats why u have other nurses here who encourage you..people have good days and bad days or maybe permanently bad days..hey...thats why there is a job market( not soo sure about that in this economy though) to go look for some part of nursing one might actually be interested in...

I dont agree with that..I do have a BSN ..and I graduated with an ADN.

I agree with emmalou...Im a nurse ..not a nun.. The decisions I make are because I am a responsible adult..not because I am a nurse...I don't drink but if I did and choose to have a glass of wine before I work the next day..its okay as long as it will not make me intoxicated or tipsy..this goes with any profession at all..not just nursing...There is life after work and what I do on my days off is completely my business as long as it does no affect my responsibilities as a nurse. I do it cos I choose to be a responsible adultI will never say hi to my patients if I see them on the street xcept they say hi to me and that's d end of the conversation without being rude because I'm in street clothes and I have enough issues with bringing work home.

Thanks for the encouraging words.. I actually work 3- 4 days a week.. I pick up overtime sometimes Thanks a lot for all the advice..There is something out there for me..I just need to find it....soon

I think I am but Im not sure.I'm so tired and I am worn out. I love being a nurse but I just dont know.. Started in the ER..Worked there for about three years..just got tired of it. Could never let go of work when I was off work. Waking up at night thinking of work. Unappreciative management. You work ur butt off but no one cares about you. U get sick one day..truly sick and ud rather go to work and pass out for people to believe u really are sick. Staff was ok but the stress was tooo much to handle but I stayed for 3 years. Switched hospitals and moved to the ICU..1 1/2 years and counting ..staff is great but I just dont feel like I belong. Its Dejavu again. I hate going to work.I feel like i have not find my niche yet but dont know where to start looking. Dont know where to start. Where I am is not the least bit fulfilling for me but I love being a nurse...Soo confusing..Is it just me????? Its like its a taboo for me to say Im not happy. I have taken vacations thinking it will help but then Im back there and the misery starts............
