What would you do if you found out that a fellow nursing student is smoking marijuana?

I agree with everyone else! Move back home with your parents. Nursing school is tough, regardless. Wouldn't it be so much easier on yourself if you didn't have to worry about working and finances?? I would move back home in a second if given the opportunity!

I don't mean to hijack this thread but how do you record lectures on your mp3?? I apologize in advance. I am a little "technology challenged"!

We don't have waiting lists at my school. Acceptance is based on a combination of your cumulative GPA, your GPA in the science courses (A&P, A&P II, Micro, etc.), and on your NET scores. You have to reapply every semester until you gain acceptance into the program. It is my understanding that a few hundred apply every semester for 30 vacancies. I did accepted for the fall semester and I have completed all my pre-req's, as well as all co-req's. It sounds like that all these schools vary so much about acceptance, pre-req's, etc. that you may want to check into whatever school you are interested in to find out there requirements. I got mine from my doctor but our local health department does it . . . for a small fee.

We didn't have science questions on our test. All we had were math and reading comprehension.

I think every school is different. We were told to begin the series of Hep B when we turned in our applications to the program. All of our immunizations are supposed to be completed before we begin class. I am not sure when we start clinicals because we don't have our orientation until the 22nd. If I were you I would contact your school to make sure you will be ok to start! Lots of Luck!

I start the nursing program August 25 and I am 33 yrs old. I have only met one other person in our program so far and she is 28. I think you will find that the ages of everyone will vary quite a bit! Good luck and best wishes to everyone!!

It also depends on what your college uses to determine acceptance. Some use the point system and that varies with each individual college. With that being said, my GPA was 3.3. All my sciences (A&P, Micro, etc.) I had A's and some B's. My GPA would have been higher if I hadn't been so stupid when I was 18. I decided to drop a class only I never "officially" dropped and the instructor didn't drop me, so I got a big fat F!:imbar I went back to school when I was 30 and have since made all A's and B's. Our school uses your overall GPA, the GPA of your science classes, and the results of your NET. They compile them together and come up with the "Magic Number"!! Of course it helped that I had completed all my pre-reqs and all co-req's. I will be going through the nursing program with 8-10 hours per semester. HTH!!:)

You know, I visited Phoenix about a year ago and they had a facility there that accepted students a little differently. (Yes I know its Phoenix AZ but if they have one there maybe they will have one in one of our bigger cities!) They made you take an entrance test and believe it or not, if you did well, then they had a spot for you in their next class. Gosh, I can't remember the name of that place! It seems like it was some sort of technical college but they only taught medical/dental (ie dental assistant, LVN, RN, xray tech, etc.) I looked into it while there to see if I had to move to get into a program:chuckle! They were really expensive though. For the RN program, they pushed you through in 1 1/2 yrs and it was like $40,000 or something crazy like that! Other than that, my advice is to apply to all colleges within communting distance. If you are willing to move, then I would apply, apply, apply. You know, all of us didn't get into a program the first time we tried. I applied to a college about a year ago. I didn't get into the RN program but they did accept me into their LVN program. I declined because my husband and daughter were in a near fatal accident. We have since moved. I applied to the college here and was extremely blessed. I did manage to get in the first time I applied here. That being said, I know alot of people who have applied 3 semesters in a row and still haven't been accepted into the program. I know it is extremely discouraging but if you heart is in nursing then just keep your chin up and keep applying! Good luck and best wishes to you!!

I have gone to 2 different CC's. Both operate the same way. You apply for NS and they calculate how many points you have. If you are the top 30 (or 45 for the other CC) you get in. They also have an alternate list although I am not sure how many they have there. So if someone declines admission into the nursing program, they will pull someone from the list of alternates. But if you don't get in, you have to reapply every semester until you either get into the program or find somewhere else to go. It is all based on your grades and I completely agree with pinknbd_99. There has to be some way to "weed through" all the applicants. So many people apply and they want to make sure they are getting serious applicants who will pass the NCLEX. I hope that helps! That is disappointing to hear. No, I won't be in your class. We moved from the Tyler area about a year ago and now live closer to my husbands family in Bryan/College Station. I have been accepted to the nursing program at Blinn. I did complete all my pre-req's at TJC though.

Wow! I didn't realize the pay for nurses was that extreme from Tyler to DFW. Although, thinking back I do remember some of my classmates spouses driving to DFW and working Friday, Sat, and Sunday and then returning back to Tyler. That is a little disappointing to hear! I am about to start NS in a little over 3 weeks:yeah:! I guess once I get finished, I will really have to do research before I accept a position somewhere. Wow! That just really blows me away! So, do we all have to move to the bigger cities to get nice pay?

Bortaz, I think you have a favorite restaurant in every city!:chuckle I am so disappointed that I have never eaten there!! Hot and sour soup is so yummy! The area you mentioned should be a good place. I also lived south of the loop. Like I said before I really, really miss it there. As far as the wait goes, from the point I was chosen for my position to the time I was set up for orientation took about a month. Drug test, background check, etc. was a little time consuming. There are LOTS of smokers at ETMC!! So definitely put that worry out of your mind! I loved Tyler and I, too, worked at ETMC although I am not a nurse yet (just been accepted into nursing program though!). I am not sure why you are having problems finding apartments there. I never noticed a huge influx of students. I currently live in College Station and you can definitely tell when the Aggies come back to town!!! If you are going to venture outside Tyler, then Lindale is a nice town. I don't know much about apartments there though. Whitehouse and Chandler are also nice. Go to www.tylerpaper.com and you can view the listings they have there! As far as living in Tyler, there are alot of nice areas. I would say most anything on the south side of town would be good. That area is really booming! I really loved that area of Texas! The only problem I ever had was finding childcare. I have never seen pregnant women put their unborn children on a waiting list for daycare!!!:chuckle Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Good luck to you!

I absolutely loved my labs! I have taken Intro to A&P, A&P I, A&P II, and Micro with labs. Our lab class was always small. I would say no more than 20 people and we never had a problem with space or materials. My lab helped me sooo much in my class and my grades!!!

I just wanted to add that I too have taken all pre-reqs and co-reqs (competition is really tough here to get into the program!). I will average between 8-10 hours every semester while in the nursing program. Hopefully, that will help us out in the long run!! Good luck to you!

I have used both depending on the number of books/classes I had at the time. Honestly though, most of the time I use a backpack (when my daughter doesn't try to take it from me!) I would NEVER use the rolling backpack at my CC! That would just scream Senior Student:chuckle

At my CC, you took both at the same time. If you failed any portion then you would only retake the portion that you failed.

I know where you are coming from! I am a 33 yr old mother of 3! I would try to stay away from the online class if at all possible especially since you said you have been out of school for a while. A&P was difficult enough in the traditional class without trying to do everything on your own. You learn so much more from the instructor and other students! My instructor really explained everything so that we understood. If we had problems, he would go back over and explain a different way. Also, lab was awesome! I learned everything in lab and then carried that over to the class. The only classes I ever took online were the classes that were not related to math and science. That being said though, everyone learns differently. I just know that online A&P would never be a wise decision for me! Good luck whichever decision you choose!

Hi! I have noticed that quite a few hospitals will pay for your education if you sign a contract with them stating that you will work so long for every year of school they pay for. I was just curious how many people have experience with this? Once you complete school and go to work, do they pay you what they pay others? Or would they pay you less since you have already obligated yourself? I thought about looking into this to help me out with school but was curious if I should. Any advice?

I don't have any information on the actual program but I wanted to say Congrats! I did all my pre-req's at TJC and I have to say I really miss that campus! I really loved Tyler!! Anyway, Congrats!!!

I really don't mean to give you a hard time but I would think that this decision would be easy. You already stated that you barely know the people involved so why jeopardize your new job? If it were me, I would wait for the schedule to come out. If you are off that day, then by all means go to the wedding. If not, then go to work!! I think it would look really bad for you to start asking for time off already! Just my
