  1. I started my first specialist placement on Monday, in theaters. Its BRILLIANT! At first I was kinda nervous becuase everyone just rushes about, knowing their role and what to do, but then I met my mentor, and she showed me round the department and so on. On my first day I didnt really do much, just observed the other staff and a tonsilectomy, and someone having polyps removed from there nose. In the afternoon of that, was meant to see a below the knee amputation, but it was cancelled in place of an emergency laparotamy (sp?!), and a hernia repair. The theater shuts at 6, and then we had to "socially" clean it before the demestics came in and clent it properly. The next day I got to help lay out the equipment needed for that days opperations, which was two repairs of a perforated ear drum (mirongplastys I think it was called) which was really interesting as Id had the same thing done a few weeks ago. In the afternoon I was in recovery, which was also enjoyable, but not as much as being in the theaters. Today I scrubbed with the scrub nurse and helped to lay out the intrusments and count them with her, and saw a bowel resection. Its sooooo interesting and the staff are well nice. And I get to were cool scrubs! This is the fisrt ever placement where Ive thought "yeah I could work here". Im in the theaters for another 2 weeks, then 2 weeks in Recovery. I hope it stays this good! :hatparty:
  2. Does any body know where I can find any information on Roaches 5Cs of Caring? I can only find relly breif listings of what they are so any help at all would be good, Thanks! Jenny.
  3. What really happens? when your younger youre told, or I was anyway, that it sticks your bones together so I was just wondering if it did have any adverse affects?

I started last yr, but we got a list of recommended books, I brought 1 and then brought some more as the course goes on. Remember you can borrow them from the libabry, and if you buy them at the beginining and dont need them its going to be a bit of a waist of money. Also, we got £50 towards books with our first busary.
  5. But my number only has 6 numbers in it! oh well, Im always freaked out at how these things work like the elephant from denmark one. Thankies.
  6. Im left handed too but I never worried about this before I started uni. So far it hasnt been a problum,Ive just done things naturally with my left hand/
  7. I think that was only in olden days. Now a days they wear dresses or a tunic and trousers. I dont think any one, where Ive been on placement anyhow, wears proper dresses like that no more.
  8. Where I am we have to do 260 placement hours a semester, but some of them can be counted as theory hours, like if were learning how to do sertain skills in the class. But usually its around 250ish. Our shifts are meant to be 7hrs long, but it depends where you are because some times you do more or less. Or if you do a night itd be more. And we usually get one day off a week. I think that the NMC rules are that in the first year you have to do about 780 or something? But it might vary uni to uni? Hope that made sence!Good Luck! What uni are you going to?
  9. Hasnt there been a few cases of Chinese Flu or something that some children have died of? A girl in Bucks who was 3/4 died of it a few weeks ago. (Creator of useless info.)
  10. I don't really know anything about childrens development and milestones. But I'm told by my Mum I didn't talk till I was quite old. Ive got a twin and I just used to communicate through him. If I wanted something Id just ask him and hed ither get it or say to my parents "Jenny wants ----" Even now, I dont really talk, like some people, just for the sake of it. So maybe hes just gonna be naturally quiet. I read somewhere, and this is going to sound well cheesy, it was in Flowers in the Attic, that one of the characters was a "quiet river that ran deep." think its kinda cool any way...
  11. vomit doesnt bother me, broken bones do. i dont know why i cant explain it they just make me cringe. but im all right with feaces etc. strange.
  12. im 19 (nearly 20!), but i do look younger. all my mentors have so far comented that i ceem to young to be training. i think its funny. most of them look so stressed they look a lot older. i have a twin as well and if we go out together, every one thinks hes well older than me. sometimes it gets annoying but i kinda like it as well.
  13. This isn't really revervant but you Im 5ft 1. And you know if you do m&h things with some really tall person, do you adjust the bed to your height or theirs? Im guessing theirs?
  14. i dont think student nurses are completly disrespected everywhere! some students make a name for themselves and maybe thats why they are treated that way. for example on my last placement i was working with two other students who talked constantly on there mobile fones in the side rooms, with the patient there. they also used the hospital fone for personal use and didnt ask before, they also went for breaks before being told and took twice as longer than other people. students need to give respect to gain it. after all, maybe when weve been qualified for ages we wont want people we consider unsuitlable to be the future of our profession.
  15. i work in an old ppls home, and me and all the staff refer to the residents as how they liked to be called, so some of them r like bob or whatever and others r like mr jones or summat. but wen im on placement i ask the patients what they want 2 b called b4 just calling them by there 1st name, although this is what they usually want. id never call them darling or sweethart though, ive seen some of the more experienced nurses doing so adn it seems rude when u dont even no them!
