Nursing instructor putting student through embarassment and singles out
I suggest that the affected student and those of you who have witnessed this behavior document this and take it to the administration. If that does not work, most schools have some kind of student advocate that can go to bat for you. This needs to be addressed. This is abuse. If a student cannot perform a task appropriately, the professional thing for an instructor to do is to take the student aside and talk things over. A good instructor will offer interventions for remediation and be available to help. This instructor you are talking about needs to be retired. Apparently, she or he is just marking time to get the paycheck.

Whats your clinical instructor/student ratio? Should I change a program..
Honey, where I am at we have been trying to get the ratios reduced, but the schools fight us. Also, from my experience, the BSN is really not that much more than the ADN. ADN will give you better clinicals. The pay is the same on the floor. Get the ADN, get in a facility that gives tuition reimbursement, then take an RN-BSN bridge online. As for the NG tubes, good luck finding one. I don't see that many where I am at. Someone else may see them all the time. Some experiences really are luck of the draw and depend on what type of patient is on the floor. I know for years I had major difficulty finding enough IM's for my students. Forget trans-dermals. We lucked out this year because we had a number of patients wanting their pneumonia vaccines and the nursing home we were in had a plethora of TB tests due.

Was this ethical?
In the light of what you said, the student behaved unethically.

Nursing schools
I am concerned because some of the nursing schools are sacrificing good science and math classes for the sake of liberal arts classes. I recently saw where one nursing does not require chemistry but requires speech and a literature/English module for ADN. When I contacted the state board of trustees, they were less than forthcoming on the issue. I feel the overemphasis we have now on those subjects outside the maths and the sciences we need are affecting the performance of our students. I have students that struggle with acid-base and electrolyte balances because they have never had chemistry. I believe we as nurses need to take back control of our profession and we, not liberal arts majors, should determine the courses of study necessary to give quality, evidence-based care.

Wife Just Completed 2nd NCLEX - question
The NCLEX is actually randomized on the number of questions. The first test, the computer gave her the long one. This one selected the 75 minimum. It varies. Also, sometimes the test will run experimental questions that don't count toward the scores to see if they are viable as part of the actual test. You can't tell the pass rate by the number of questions.

Yelling Doctors, How do you handle them?????
Well, the first thing I did was time and date incident, document in the patient's notes that the MD was called to clarify an order and that the MD did not clarify the order. Then I report the MD to my supervisor and file a complaint. With one that was particularly nasty, I also researched to report him to the state licensing for abuse. If he threatens you, you can go down to the police station and file a complaint. You don't have to dial 911.

Yelling Doctors, How do you handle them?????
In this day and age with the communists in control I would not be surprised to find a policeman come up and arrest the doctor.

Good example of interdisciplinary teamwork and respect
I just received my newsletter from IAHPC. I notice every time I get the newsletter how much respect the members of the palliative care teams have for each other despite their discipline. The doctors, nurses, caseworkers, chaplains, all of them work together well as a team and respect each other's expertise and decisions. I wish I saw that in other arenas of healthcare. The biggest problem I see is not just doctors disrespecting nurses but also some PT/OT and others treating nurses poorly. They need to remember we as nurses are the foundation, catalyst, and the driving force behind the interdisciplinary team.

Nurses, physicians weigh in on new doctoral nurse degree
Maybe we need to go to the European system. No physician is ever called "Dr." despite his or her medical degrees unless they go back and get a PhD as well. Physicians and surgeons are called Mr. or Ms. I think we need that system here. In this country anyone with any kind of doctorate, whether MD, OD, JD (lawyer), PhD, or DNP has the right to use the title Dr. It is not a legal issue. These physicians just don't want the competition from the DNP's.

Gender descriptions in my MSN text
I think it is. I found it distracting and prejudicial. It was comments like "the farmer can't help her family", followed by "the carpenter doesn't know what she will do." Very strange. I would have said "the farmer can't help his family and the carpenter does not know what she will do."

Is it best to get BSN as opposed to ADN for second degree?
I had a BA in something else when I went to nursing school. I went ADN. I am glad I did because I feel I got more clinical experience than I would have for BSN. I am now working on my MSN. I took an RN-MSN bridge. I only had to take 3 BSN bridges to prepare me. I did not see that it added all that much knowledge to my ADN. I learned a little more about nursing theory, how to read research, and how to do a care plan for a family, which I was already doing before the class anyway because of my work as a hospice home-health nurse.n Get your ADN, then bridge over to MSN later.:wink2:

Judge: Audubon managers broke labor law on nurses union vote
What Audobon did was in violation of some older laws that go back to the late 19th century and the term of Teddy Roosevelt. These laws were designed to protect laborers from discrimination. Audobon should have used a different tact. They cannot harrass. They can, however, refuse to sign a contract with the union. They can also bring in others to cover if the union goes on strike. I am very wary of unions, especially those affiliated with the AFL-CIO. I have had bad experiences with them and I firmly believe in an open shop. Audobon is right in that a union contract could state that nurses would not be allowed to do CNA work. What happens if there are not enough CNA's to help or if a CNA on our team needs help? Will the union contract prevent us from cleaning a patient? I can't neglect a client just because of a union contract.

Nursing in Texas- Full Name legality on badge
Is this required by law in Texas? We generally here in Florida may either leave off the last name or we have the first name large and the last in tiny print. If there is a legal problem, the client can always subpoena the records to see who had his room from the facility. We started that because of nurses in military families and 9/11.

Gender descriptions in my MSN text
I noticed that one of the texts I am reading tends to discriminate in gender. I was reading an article and everyone in there was a "she". In the past, most articles I have read trade off with a "he" here and a "she" there. Has anyone else had this problem?
